● unfortunately no baptism record for John James can be found in either Shorne or Higham, Kent in 1858-9, which might have shown his exact date of birth, and whether it corresponded with the one he stated in 1925 (below)

● what appears to be John James Nash was a witness at the marriage in 1882 of Mary Ann Lygo, his 1st cousin

● the data for the 2nd marriage is a supposition based on the various documents below: the marriage record is for John J. Nash, he married about 1898, his wife’s name was Jennie, in the 1905 census a William P. Merrill, brother-in-law was living with them, born in Canada, as was Jennie

● it can only be presumed that Jennie married (1) someone called Coono[sic]? (possibly a mistranscription of a simpler name)

FACTS

● a John James Nash, age 24 (so born about 1858), married Caroline Rowe, as above, address 65 Marsham? Street, Westminster, Middx, but gave his father as  “William Nash, builder”, whereas this John James’ father William variously gave his occupation in the censuses as “wheelwright & carpenter”, “market gardener”, ”farmer”, and “retired builder”, so this MAY or MAY not be the correct man – but the mother’s name of the children staying with his sisters in the 1891 and 1891 censuses was Rowe

● but only 1 John James Nash was born in Kent in the period 1856-60

● John James did however appear in the 1881 census as boarder c/o the Shelfer family, age 22 (so born about 1859, Higham, Kent), grocer’s assistant, at 7 Glasgow Terrace, Westminster, Middx (Glasgow Terrace is a couple of km from Marsham Street)

● at least 2 Nash children, mother’s maiden name Rowe, were born: Cecil Gordon (born 1885, at the home of John James’ sister Emily Eliza in the 1891 census, “nephew”), and Gladys, born in New York, USA (at the home of John James’ sister Alice Jane in the 1901 census, “niece”)

● John James cannot be found in England from the 1891 census onwards

● the 1890 USA census no longer exists, but a John J. Nash, born APR 1858 in England, wife Jennie, is in the 1900 USA census, with son Cecil G., born JUL 1885 in England

● a John J. Nash, 61 (so born about 1859) born Higham [although this does not appear in the actual document], divorced, butler, British subject, next of kin Mrs J. Huggett, Dartford, Kent [John James’ sister Julia Avis married Henry Huggett, and they lived in the Dartford area], arrived in New York in 1920

● a John James Nash signed the “Declaration of Intention” (to become a citizen of the USA) in 1925 in California, with the following details: butler, born 19 APR 1858, Higham, Kent, England, residing in California, USA, emigrated to the USA from England, last foreign residence Blackheath, Kent, England, wife Jennie --, divorced, born I…, Canada, arrived APR 1920

● a John J. Nash, age 71 (so born about 1858) arrived from New York, USA in AUG 1929, occupation butler, country of last permanent residence USA, country of intended future permanent residence England, address in the UK 107 Redstone Road, Hornsey, MiddxPASSENGER LISTS

● in the 1939 Register 107 Redston Road, Hornsey M.B., Middx was empty

CONCLUSION

so it would appear that:

► John James and Caroline married in 1882, and Cecil Gordon was born in 1885

► John James states he emigrated to the USA in 1883CENSUS (although, if Cecil Gordon was born in Q3 1885, John James would need to have been in England 9 months earlier if he was his father), and Gladys was born there in 1891

► why Cecil Gordon is (still) in England in the 1891 census is unclear – in the various censuses he states he immigrated to the USA 1886 and 1894 – the former is impossible if he was in England in the 1891 census, the latter possibly feasible, although that is the year Caroline possibly died – he does not appear in any passenger lists - on the other hand, as he would have been a child at the time, he would not have necessarily been able to remember the exact date - perhaps Caroline did not emigrate in 1883 with her husband, but stayed on in England until after Cecil Gordon was born, then joined her husband in New York sometime before 1891, when Gladys was born, leaving Cecil Gordon in England until he was bigger

► but Caroline possibly died in 1894, and Gladys was sent back to England, where she appears in the 1901 census

► whereas John James remarried in about 1898, and appears in the 1900 USA census with his 2nd wife and Cecil Gordon

► John James arrived in New York (again) in APR 1920 – as the 1920 USA census was taken in JAN 1920, he might have been in England then, which would explain why he cannot be found there

► he arrived in England (again) in AUG 1929, and possibly died there in 1933

● as the passenger lists are not comprehensive – and John James might sometime have travelled as “John Nash” - it has not been possible to trace all his movements across the Atlantic – and as in the 1900 census he gives his occupation as “steward”, perhaps he was in the Merchant Navy

● the death record for Caroline is pure supposition, but it would explain why her daughter Gladys was in England the 1901 census

● nothing more is known about her

Jennie Coono[sic] née Merrill? immigrated to the USA in 1897CENSUS

● nothing more is known about her

● the daughter Edith is shown in the Workhouse records as illegitimate, and no father is shown - she is listed here as, being born 2 months before William Thomas and Amy, the former MAY possibly have been the actual father

● whereas she is shown in the 1901 census as Edith Kimber, in 1911 she is shown as Edith Nash, so William Thomas MAY have adopted her

● Violet Louise is shown in her baptism record as being definitely the daughter of William Thomas and Amy

● both daughters are shown in the 1911 census as in the Lambeth Workhouse Schools

● in 1903, a William, Edith and Louise V. [sic], age 32, 4 and 3 (so born about 1871, 1899 and 1900 respectively) are shown as being discharged from the Workhouse at William's own request, the daughters both being discharged with their father

● similarly, in JUL 1911, a William, baker, Edith and Violet, age 39, 12 and 11 (so born about 1872, 1899 and 1900 respectively) are shown as being discharged from the Workhouse, the daughters both being discharged with their father

● this latter fact shows that William Thomas was alive during the 1911 census, even if he cannot be found, whereas Amy MAY possibly have died

● as Nash is such a common name, it is difficult to find many of the family's details

● a Leonard C(harles) Nash (1913-1986) appears to be the son of Leonard Stanley Nash and Emily Kimber

● nothing more is known about Amy Kimber

● in the various censuses Cecil Gordon states he immigrated to the USA 1886 and 1894 – the former is impossible if he was in England in the 1891 census, the latter possibly feasible, although that is the year his mother Caroline possibly died – he does not appear in any passenger lists - on the other hand, as he would have been a child at the time, he would not have necessarily been able to remember the exact date - perhaps Caroline did not emigrate in 1883 with her husband, but stayed on in England until after Cecil Gordon was born

● a Cecil Nash married 1904, New Jersey, USA, Emma Feurer – as the family lived in New Jersey, and their 1st son was born there about 1906, and as Emma L. stated in the census that her parents were both born in German speaking Switzerland, it is feasible that this is the correct couple

● on his World War 2 Draft Registration Card, 1942, Cecil Gordon gave his employer as Nash Service Station, Park Avenue, Nutley, New Jersey, USA, possibly his own business

● the author previously thought that Jane Elizabeth's death details were: died 22 JUL 1970, North Walsham, Norfolk R/DBMD, born 31 JAN 1894, age 75, buried 29 JUL 1970, Erith Cemetery, Erith, KentBMD

the date of birth given in the death record, 31 JAN 1894, could have been a mistake, and should possibly really have read 31 JAN 1895, as the birth records contain no other Jane Elizabeth Nash born 1894-5

● however, now that the 1939 Register is available online, in which Jane Elizabeth and John William Richard cannot be found, there was another Jane E. Wright,  born 31 JAN 1894, living in Erith, Kent, wife of Herbert J. Wright

● it is therefore more likely that the Jane Elizabeth who died 22 JUL 1970, North Walsham, Norfolk R/D, born 31 JAN 1894, age 75, buried 29 JUL 1970, Erith Cemetery, Erith, Kent, was this person, especially as the birth dates in the death record and 1939 Register match, and she was returned to Erith for burial

● also, as John William Richard died in Trowbridge, Wilts R/D, a death for Jane Elizabeth in North Walsham, Norfolk R/D would have been less likely

John William Richard was most likely the brother of Arthur Henry James Wright, Jane Elizabeth’s sister Rose Agnes’ husband (below), especially as both their baptism records state “son of William, carpenter, and Sarah Ann Wright”

● Ashby Parva was in Lutterworth, Leics R/D

● in their wedding certificates, both men gave their profession as engineer, and their residence as Higham - Arthur Henry James as Uralite House (British Uralite made building materials from asbestos at Higham)

● John William Richard gave his father as William Wright, deceased, wheelwright, Arthur Henry James as William Wright, carpenter - if the census records mentioned below for both men are the correct ones, their father died 1901~11

● the only 2 birth records with these names in 1889 +/- 1 year and 1891 +/- 1 year were, respectively, John William R. Wright, Q4 1889, and Arthur Henry J. Wright, Q3 1891, both in Lutterworth, Leics R/D

● providing these are the correct census records, both boys appear in 1901 and 1911 at home, in 1901 with their parents, William, bricklayer, and Louisa, and in 1911 with their widowed mother Louisa

● however, whereas John William Richard's age is more or less correct in both census, ie. 10 and 20, Arthur Henry James age is given as 4 months and 10, making him born 1900, not 1891

● the ages of an elder brother, Fred, 9 and 18, are more or less those which Arthur Henry James should have been

● there is however no birth record for a Fred Wright in Lutterworth, Leics R/D in 1890-5

● furthermore, in both census all the children were shown as having been born in Castle Donington, Leics, which was not in Lutterworth, Leics R/D

● nothing more is known about them
