First Response to Bassoon Questionnaire

Shortly before I heard the sad news of the death of the great Italian Heckel bassoonist Enzo Muccetti (see TTWB, Vol. VII, No. 1), I prepared an informational questionnaire about bassoon playing in Italy to be sent to Maestro Muccetti. I was interested in many aspects of bassoon playing in Italy: of course the instruments used - whether German or French system and the makes of bassoon in use, reed styles, fingering preferences, and so forth.

I was in hopes that Muccetti could circulate the questionnaire (which I had translated into Italian) among his many colleagues in that music-historically very important country.

But when I heard of Muccetti's passing, I feared that our contacts with Italian players might be lost. Fortunately, by coincidence, I received a letter from one of Muccetti's best former pupils, Rino Vernizzi, asking about membership in IDRS. So I forwarded my questionnaire and request to this young bassoonist. In a few weeks I got back the following reply to the questionnaire. For all bassoonists interested (not only in Italy, but from any country), you may use this question form and send IDRS similar information about your playing situations and interests:

  1. Name: Rino Vernizzi
  2. Address: TORINO (Turin), Italy
  3. Position: Solo bassoonist, RAI Symphony Orchestra of Turin and Teacher of bassoon, Conservatory of Genoa
  4. Instrument(s) used: Heckel (10,000 series)
  5. Reeds Used:
