Orthodox - New Calendarists Orthodox - Old Calendarists Western Here is a list of Orthodox Easter dates listed in the Julian Calendar or the , 1875-2124
Introduction This program calculates: Easter Sunday in both the Western (Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant) Christian, and in the Eastern (Orthodox) Christian traditions; The movable Feasts associated with Easter in the Western and Eastern traditions; Many Feasts in the Catholic calendar, usually celebrations of events in the lives of Jesus or Mary
An important note for historians and people using these dates for research: Even though the Gregorian calendar was adopted into use by the Catholic Church and many Catholic areas of Europe in AD 1582 October, many areas did not adopt the Gregorian Calendar, the new method of determining Easter, or both, until later
For example, England and its dominions did not accept the Gregorian Calendar or the new method of determining Easter until 1752; thus, Easter in England prior to 1753 was determined using the same algorithm as that of the Orthodox Church
1576) devised the system that would become the basis of the Gregorian Calendar, as well as the tables that would be used to determine the date of Easter

History & info - the Chinese calendar
Explains what the lunar calendar is, how it began, and how festival dates are
determined.
The Chinese Calendar Chinese New Year is the main holiday of the year for more than one quarter of the world's population
Although the People's Republic of China uses the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes, a special Chinese calendar is used for determining festivals
Various Chinese communities around the world also use this calendar
The beginnings of the Chinese calendar can be traced back to the 14th century B.C.E
Legend has it that the Emperor Huangdi invented the calendar in 2637 B.C.E
The Chinese calendar is based on exact astronomical observations of the longitude of the sun and the phases of the moon
This means that principles of modern science have had an impact on the Chinese calendar
What Does the Chinese Year Look Like? The Chinese calendar - like the Hebrew - is a combined solar/lunar calendar in that it strives to have its years coincide with the tropical year and its months coincide with the synodic months
It is not surprising that a few similarities exist between the Chinese and the Hebrew calendar: An ordinary year has 12 months, a leap year has 13 months
History & info - the Islamic calendar
Introduces the lunar calendar that governs religious observances. Explains why
you can't print an Islamic calendar in advance.
The Islamic calendar The Islamic calendar (or Hijri calendar) is a purely lunar calendar
It contains 12 months that are based on the motion of the moon, and because 12 synodic months is only 12 x 29.53=354.36 days, the Islamic calendar is consistently shorter than a tropical year, and therefore it shifts with respect to the Christian calendar
The calendar is based on the Qur'an (Sura IX, 36-37) and its proper observance is a sacred duty for Muslims
The Islamic calendar is the official calendar in countries around the Gulf, especially Saudi Arabia
But other Muslim countries use the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes and only turn to the Islamic calendar for religious purposes
So you can't print an Islamic calendar in advance? Not a reliable one
However, calendars are printed for planning purposes, but such calendars are based on estimates of the visibility of the lunar crescent, and the actual month may start a day earlier or later than predicted in the printed calendar
Different methods for estimating the calendars are used
Some sources mention a crude system in which all odd numbered months have 30 days and all even numbered months have 29 days with an extra day added to the last month in 'leap years' (a concept otherwise unknown in the calendar)

The Jewish/Civil Calendar Program -- Info
Interactive Web program that prints out Jewish and Civil calendars side-by-side.
Does not list holidays in either calendar. Source code available.
The Jewish/Civil Calendar Program – Some Information Some Background to the Program I originally wrote this program in the Icon programming language on a computer running UNIX
According to Jewish tradition, the year 1 of the Jewish calendar was the time of 'waste and void' referred to in Genesis 1.1
(in the Gregorian calendar -- of course this calendar did not exist at that time) He said: Let there be light! and creation began
How to use the Program The Jewish/Civil Perpetual Calendar accepts, at the prompt 'YEAR(S)', a year of the Jewish calendar, for example '5750', and produces on the screen a calendar of that year with a visually equivalent civil calendar opposite it for easy conversion of dates
The months of the civil year are abbreviated to JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC and of the Jewish calendar to NIS IYA SIV TAM AV ELU TIS HES KIS TEV SHE ADA AD2
The year 0 is not meaningful in either calendar
No date prior to 1 in the Jewish calendar can be entered
All civil dates are according to the Gregorian Calendar which first came into use in 1582 and was accepted in different places at different times

It gives a whole new meaning to the concept of 'sacrifice.' [12/28/01: addendum -- again, I'm going to rescue the passage lest it too vanish:] Traditionally the Spring Festival actually begins its course a week before the Chinese New Year (the 23th of the last month from Chinese lunar calendar), with the practice of offering a sacrifice to the Kitchen God, a god sent from Heaven to each family to take charge of family's affairs and make a report on what the family has done in the past year to Heaven annually on the date of the 23th

This year, in the realm of international politics and wars, he sees the Year of the Dog as quite hopeful (unlike last year): The Year of the Dog, 2006, in the Hsia calendar, is symbolized by two elements with fire sitting on top of earth
Again, he sees reasons for hope: The Chinese calendar year goes on 60-year cycle

The earliest calendars must have been strongly influenced by the geographical location of the people who made them
But in warmer countries, where the seasons are less pronounced, the Moon became the basic unit for time reckoning; an old Jewish book says that “the Moon was created for the counting of the days.” Most of the oldest calendars were lunar calendars, based on the time interval from one new moon to the next—a so-called lunation
The calendar had to account for these yearly events as well
The Egyptian Calendar The ancient Egyptians used a calendar with 12 months of 30 days each, for a total of 360 days per year
Only once every 1, 460 years did their calendar year coincide precisely with the solar year
