Yahoo Chess vs. The Chess Servers
Compares the features of Yahoo chess with those of other chess servers.
Collins A popular place to play chess on-line is at the Yahoo! Games site
At times, I see anywhere from 4, 000 to 5, 000 people, or more, logged into the chess room, playing here!! These figures never cease to amaze me because Yahoo! is NOT the ideal place to play on-line chess! That distinction belongs to the chess servers, namely, and ICC
This page is my effort to help educate those who are not yet aware of the on-line chess servers and all of the many advantages they offer
However, the chess servers have been around a lot longer (many years) than Yahoo!'s chess site, and for that reason alone, Yahoo! has a lot of catching up to do in the "features" department
To play chess on the chess servers, you are not forced to use your web browser or load a slow Java applet, as you are at Yahoo!
To play chess on the chess servers, all that is required is that you take a moment and download a program, otherwise known as a chess "interface." There are literally dozens of interfaces to choose from
Probably three of the most popular are WinBoard , CHESSBD (otherwise known as Slics), and Chess Client

Ed's Ever-Growing Chess Page
Chess pictures, stories, tournaments, games and problems.
"Chess is addicting! (Fortunately, there is no known cure!)" "Chess Life" ..
isn't that redundant? Chess IS Life! Probably the best of the "personal homepage" style chess sites on the web, this one has actual content; tidbits, opinions, essays, problems, etc
Especially useful for those new to online chess, Ed has a section comparing the various chess servers, and a page devoted to the WinBoard interface
The above description of this page was written by the author of the wonderful chess site
Thanks! I stumbled onto your outstanding chess page while doing a net search for chess-related topics
Somebody at work said that they played chess at Yahoo! and I wondered how good their site could be
I'm fond of chess -- started playing at around 10 but never very seriously
Whoa! Thanks for the kind words! A position from one of my over-the-board tournament games recently appeared in the Los Angeles Times ! Several years ago, when I lived in Mesa, Arizona, a picture of me playing chess was published in the Wednesday, April 6, 1994 edition of the Arizona Republic

For a no-frills game of chess, go GNU
GNU Chess doesn’t have many features
One thing GNU Chess will let you do is control how long it takes the computer to think before it makes a move, although the fastest setting is still molasses slow compared to other chess programs
Chess doesn’t get much simpler than this
This speeds up the game considerably, although it’s hardly good chessmanship because the computer can’t return the favor when it’s your turn
