The book suggests the placment of a volt meter (reverse polarity) between pin 1 of the 12BE6, receiver mixer, and ground
The procedure goes on to explain that on a negative scale, peak the volt meter at certain frequencys, etc
(I believe the 40 meter slug) I found this curious and talked to John about how he did it
1) Instead of connecting a volt meter as described, simply clamp a lead from a field strength meter to the 30 pf capacitor which comes off of pin 1 of the 12BE6 mixer, (usually C-702) and adjust the slugs for maximum reading on the same frequencys as shown in the manual
I do not use a volt meter

Make sure that the meter can read low (in the 1-volt range) and low (in the 5- to 10-milliamp range)
Then measure the voltage and current by attaching your volt meter to the two pieces of metal

30L-1 Linear Amplifier

The 30-L-1 provides SSB and CW emission and covers the 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands
Indicating devices on the 30L-1 include a panel meter monitoring final amplifier plate current, plate voltage, and tuning circuit
With the meter switch in tune position, the 30L-1 uses an exclusive comparator circuit which can be operated by simply adjusting tuning and loading controls to zero the meter
30L-1 SPECIFICATIONS FREQUENCY RANGE: 3.4 - 30.0 mc, covering 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter amateur bands
It also powers the pilot lamp in the meter
This voltage is developed across R7 in the plate supply bleeder network, and varied by potentiometer R16
METERING CIRCUITS One section of the METER switch, S3, selects the output voltage from a tuning and loading bridge circuit
The meter then will read zero
The second section of the meter switch connects the meter to the plate supply through a four-megohm multiplier resistor to indicate the dc voltage output
The third section of the meter switch connects the meter, through R10, across shunt, R8
