El Paso is at the far western tip of Texas, where New Mexico and the Mexican state of Chihuahua meet in a harsh desert environment around the slopes of Mount Franklin on the Rio Grande, which has often been compared to the Nile
This site they named El Paso del Norte (the Pass of the North), the future location of two border cities—Ciudad Juárez on the south or right bank of the Rio Grande, and El Paso, Texas, on the opposite side of the river
The El Paso area was inhabited for centuries by various Indian groups before the Spaniards came
The first Europeans in all probability were Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca qv and his three companions, survivors of an unsuccessful Spanish expedition to Florida, who passed through the El Paso area in 1535 or 1536, although their exact route is debated by historians
The first party of Spaniards that certainly saw the Pass of the North was the Rodríguez-Sánchez expedition qv of 1581; its arrival marked the beginning of 400 years of history in the El Paso area
The Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680 sent Spanish colonists and Tigua Indians of New Mexico fleeing southward to take refuge at the pass, transplanting the names of New Mexico river pueblos, including La Isleta and Socorro, to the El Paso area

EL PASO COUNTY
El Paso County (J-1) is the westernmost county of Texas
Bounded on the southwest by the Rio Grande and Mexico, on the north and west by the state of New Mexico, and on the east by Hudspeth County, Texas, El Paso County is approximately 650 miles west of Dallas and 575 miles northwest of San Antonio
El Paso County and neighboring Hudspeth County are the only Texas counties on Mountain Time
Although summer temperatures usually rise above 100° F for brief periods and have reached a peak of 112, El Paso is not one of the nation's hot spots
Some 240 square miles of the county is occupied by the city of El Paso (1992 population 515, 342), the largest United States city on the Mexican border, the fourth largest in Texas, and twenty-eighth in the United States
Other El Paso County communities include Fabens, Tornillo, Clint, San Elizario, Socorro, Horizon City, Canutillo, and Anthony
Although a major industrial area, El Paso County has few natural resources other than abundant sunshine and bounteous agriculture
The Spanish name El Paso del Norte denotes a historically important geographical point, the channel cut by the Rio Grande through the mountains to form a natural passageway for travelers to the north or south, east or west
