La band inizialmente si chiamava Magnified Plaid , ma il nome divenne presto noto come MxPx
Una versione della storia su come il nome divenne MxPx, è perché Yuri fece stampare dei poster per i loro concerti con impresse le iniziali della band "M.P.", ma i punti vennero scambiati per x, così la gente iniziò a chiamarli MxPx
Una delle versioni più improbabili su come il nome sia cambiato, è perchè quando Mike firmò un contratto, scrisse le iniziali del nome della band, e ancora una volta i punti vennero scambiati per x e il nome del gruppo venne scambiato per MxPx
Poco dopo la band registrò delle canzoni e le inserirono in una demo, che venne ascoltata dalla Tooth & Nail Record
Dopo l'uscita di Life In Generator, la band lascia la Tooth & Nail Record e firma per la A&M Record
