  • Allow the soil to become moderately dry between waterings, and make sure there is one or more drainage holes in the bottom of each container

  • The soil should be well drained, using one pound of a 10-20-10 fertilizer, two pounds 6-10-4 formula, or comparable amounts of a similar formula, per 100 square feet

  • Incorporate the fertilizer into the soil, taking care not to dig so deeply as to damage the roots

  • Make sure the soil is moist, and keep the fertilizer off the foliage and flowers

  • Use a good potting soil with enough organic matter, similar to that recommended for indoor plants

  • Water geraniums when the soil becomes moderately dry

  • Give the soil a good soaking at each watering, and avoid frequent light waterings

  • There are three basic methods of overwintering geraniums: dry (soil-less) storage, potted or cuttings

  • To overwinter your favorites using dry storage, carefully dig whole plants before frost, tie them in bundles, shake off the soil and hang them by the root ends in a cool basement or moist area for the winter

  • Most commercial potting soil mixes can be used as a germinating media

    soil, placement and care.

  • HOME & GARDEN INFORMATION CENTER 1-888-656-9988 HGIC 1457 Indoor Plants - Terrariums A terrarium is a transparent glass or plastic container with soil

  • SOIL Soil must be high in organic matter, clean and well-drained

  • Most potting soils sold at nurseries and garden centers have been sterilized

  • It is possible to make your own mix by combining by volume one part peat and one part soil conditioning grade of pine bark with one part rich garden soil

  • The soil in the mix must be sterilized by heating it to an internal temperature of 200 °F

  • In general, about a quarter of the container will be used for drainage material and soil

  • Next, place a ½-inch layer of horticultural charcoal above the pebbles to keep the soil from developing a sour smell

  • Sphagnum moss may be placed over the charcoal to prevent soil from sifting into the drainage area

  • Add relatively dry soil to the container (it should not be so wet that it sticks to the side)

  • To add interest you may choose to arrange the soil so that it slopes from the back of the container towards the front

  • A large kitchen spoon is helpful in placing drainage material and soil in the container

Home gardener describes his method for germinating seeds using moist filter papers
and ziplock baggies. Also detailed germination information for many plant ...

  • A lot depends on your favorite things to grow from seed: if you like lettuce, you'll mostly direct-sow in the garden; if tomatoes are your thing, chances are you start indoors in potting soil with bottom heat; and if you prefer finnicky alpines, you may engage in scatter-sowing across a grit-covered pot

  • First, a summary of the methods I routinely use: the, with all its variations sowing to a cellpack - with and without bottom heat sowing to a pot - inside, outside, or combinations thereof direct-sowing in the garden When I first started on my germination adventures, I went about it in a fairly traditional way: cellpacks filled with a seed-starting soil mix, a few seeds to each cell, each cellpack under the growlights

  • I describe the ins and outs of this method on, but in short, it involves germinating seeds outside of soil, and transplanting them to containers to grow on after they germinate

  • Here are some of the advantages I see to this approach: Seed varieties don't consume any cellpacks, soil, or space under the lights until they actually germinate

  • If you'd have sown directly to soil, you could have saved yourself a step

Mycorrhizae Inoculants for better plant roots and healthier plants.
Specializing in locating and producing high-performance organic growing products
such as mycorrhizal inoculant, for the home gardener market as well as for ...

  • As more and more is learned about how plants really work, it is becoming obvious that the conventional emphasis on soil chemistry and NPK fertilizers has problems - most notably in the areas of drinking water contamination, soil degradation, disease-prone plants, and input costs

  • But after decades of following chemically-oriented growing practices, soil scientists around the world are now looking to the biological sciences to find better, cleaner, and more sustainable methods of growing both crops and ornamentals

  • In natural soil situations, plants enjoy mutually-beneficial relationships with many other organisms, many of them microscopic, and all these biological elements - plant roots, fungi, bacteria, earthworms, and other life forms - play some role in the lives of the others

  • The fungi are nourished by root exudates and in return bring great amounts of soil nutrients and moisture to their host plants

  • The addition of mycorrhizal fungi spores to transplant roots, garden soils, potting soil, lawns, or seeded crops will ensure the presence of these valuable plant allies

  • The difference in plant health and performance can be dramatic, especially when dealing with less-than-perfect soils

  • Your will make an excellent potting soil

  • If compost is not available, purchase a good quality potting mixture or make your own from equal parts of sand, loamy garden soil, and peat moss

  • Most container gardeners have found that a "soilless" potting mix works best

  • In addition to draining quickly, "soilless" mixes are lightweight and free from soil- borne diseases and weed seeds

  • When you add your soil to your container, leave a 2 inch space between the top of the soil and the top of the container

  • I personally like Whitney Farm's Germinating Mix (Ingredients: A soilless mix consisting of fine-screened Sphagnum Peat Moss, Fine Perlite, Fine Vermiculite, Sand, and Fine Pumice

  • For larger seeds like squashes and cucumbers, I use the cheapest generic soil mix available

  • Makes transplanting easy as the soil doesn't fall off the root ball like the finer stuff does

  • Most commercial mixes contain : high-quality sphagnum peat, fine vermiculite and often perlite, a very small quantity of limestone, a wetting agent and enough fertilizer to last through two or three waterings For a home made mix (per gallon) My soil formulas are available on the Seed Starting Guide CD listed at the bottom of this page

Building a square foot garden: Journey to Forever
Pictures and descriptions of laying out garden beds.

  • What makes a good site? Lots of sunshine, and tons and tons of that "well-drained, rich, loamy soil" the seed packets tell you to plant your seeds in, as if the stuff grows on trees

  • So just choose a good place where there's enough light, we'll fix the soil

  • Take up a bit of lawn if you like, the soil under a lawn is usually quite good

  • Pile the squares in a block, grass-side down, wet thoroughly as you go, cover the top with a garbage bag to keep it moist, and it'll rot down into a useful supply of well-drained, rich, loamy soil

  • If you have some suitable garden space with fairly soft soil you've been using for growing, use that

  • Keep checking to see the soil is moist, sprinkle again if not

  • Is the soil fertile enough? No, in a word

  • The so-called potting composts and multipurpose composts you can buy in garden centres are usually not compost at all, they're potting soil mixtures: you want organic compost, made from organic wastes by "hot" composting

  • It's hard work, but these beds are small, and if your soil is quite good it won't break your back

Collection of articles and resources about the horticultural uses of perlite and
    vermiculite.

  • THE SCHUNDLER COMPANY HORTICULTURAL USES OF PERLITE AND VERMICULITE Perlite and vermiculite have been used for years to amend professional potting soils made from peat moss (called 'soilless' mixes or artificial soils because they literally contain no soil)

  • We encourage you to read them! Commercial Greenhouse Production with Perlite and Vermiculite Soil Mixes Plant Guides on Potting Soils and Greenhouses : A fascinating study on how perlite particle size affects water retention, aeration, and drainage--and why smaller sizes could and should be used

  • How fine perlite helps outdoor gardens--loosens soil and retains water

  • Perlite has been used for many years throughout the world for soil conditioning and as a component of growing mixes with materials such as peat moss or bark

  • When composting is completed and the compost is put to use, the perlite will continue to perform for many years as it lightens and aerates the soil while increasing its water holding ability

  • Additionally, turf will be lush and green while the soil will remain soft for an extended period of time

  • (see .) For the landscaper or home gardener, fine and medium grades of perlite will promote drainage and eliminate soil crusting in heavy clay soils
