    Timeline of Concrete
The story of concrete from the natural deposit of cement compounds 12000000 BC,
through the creation of concrete by the Romans to its uses in the 1990s.

  • Historical Timeline of Concrete 12, 000, 000 BC Reactions between limestone and oil shale during spontaneous combustion occurred in Israel to form a natural deposit of cement compounds

  • Also furthered the discovery of lime and gypsum mortar as a binding agent for building the Pyramids 3000 BC Used cementitious materials to hold bamboo together in their boats and in the Great Wall

  • They used lime as a cementitious material

  • 1756 John Smeaton, British Engineer, rediscovered hydraulic cement through repeated testing of mortar in both fresh and salt water 1779 Bry Higgins was issued a patent for hydraulic cement (stucco) for exterior plastering use

  • 1796 James Parker from England patented a natural hydraulic cement by calcining nodules of impure limestone containing clay, called Parker’s Cement or Roman Cement

  • Leger was issued patents for hydraulic cement

  • 1818 Canvass White, American Engineer, found rock deposits in Madison, County, New York, that made hydraulic cement with little processing 1820-1821 John Tickell and Abraham Chambers were issued more hydraulic cement patents

  • 1822 James Frost of England prepared artificial hydraulic lime like Vicat’s and called it British Cement

MOXIE INTERNATIONAL CONCRETE ADMIXTURES / CONCRETE SEALERS AND ...
Glossary of basic terms used in concrete manufacture and construction.

  • Introduction The people involved in the cement or concrete industries, either in its manufacture, use, or application is so broad that the information contained should be understood by everyone

  • Mix design is composed of portland cement, sand or siliceous material, lime, gypsum, finely powdered aluminum, and water

  • Initial mix is a combination of portland cement, sand, lime and gypsum to produce a slurry

  • Finely powdered aluminum mixed into a paste is added prior to placement into large, rail-like forms

  • The finely powdered aluminum reacts with the alkaline components of the cement and lime to produce hydrogen gas, which increases the volume approximately five times producing a uniformly, dispersed cellular structure

  • Example: Absolute Volume of one sack of cement equals: 94 ÷ (3.15X62.4) = 0.478 cubic feet Absorbed Moisture Moisture which is mechanically held in a material

  • Accelerator An admixture which, when added to concrete, mortar, or grout, increases the rate of hydration of the hydraulic cement, shortens the time of set and increases the rate of hardening or strength development, Adiabatic Curing The maintenance of ambient conditions during the setting and hardening of concrete so that heat is neither lost nor gained from the surroundings of the concrete

MOXIE INTERNATIONAL CONCRETE ADMIXTURES / CONCRETE SEALERS AND ...
    Manufactures environmentally safe products.

  • Moxie International "Concrete answers to your Concrete questions"® We manufacture both admixture and post placement sealers

  • Cement and concrete are two entirely different things yet many times are incorrectly used interchangeably

  • Cement is the powdered raw form

  • Cement mixed with sand and aggregates (gravel) is concrete

  • Cement mixed with sand and clay is referred to as stucco for exterior use, yet, is called plaster for interior or swimming pool use

  • Even though all of these terms are distinctly different, depending on the application, the actual chemical process that takes place, and the principles that apply, when cement is mixed with water and aggregates, are the same

  • Water Cement Ratio - This property is one of the most important factors in producing quality concrete

  • The water to cement ratio of concrete is simply the weight of the water divided by the weight of the cement

  • At placement of the slab the water-cement ratio directly affects permeability and the time it takes before flooring materials can be installed

  • The water to the cement ratio is dependant in part on the local aggregates and sand available

    Set-Retarding
Short description of common retarders and their mechanismn of retardation.

  • Infrastructure Materials Group Set-Retarding Retarding admixtures (retarders) are known to delay hydration of cement without affecting the long-term mechanical properties

  • The role of retarding admixtures can be explained in a simple way: the admixtures form a film around the cement compounds (e.g., by absorption), thereby preventing or slowing the reaction with water

  • However, in some cases when the dosage of admixtures exceeds a certain critical point, hydration of cement compounds will never proceed beyond a certain stage, and the cement paste will never set

  • Other factors influencing the degree of retardation include the w/c, cement content, C3A and alkali contents in cement, the type and dosage of the admixture, and the stage at which the retarder is added to the mix

  • This is especially important when the length of placement may result in flexural cracks created by dead load deflections during placement

  • Before this time, all cement consumed was imported

  • The demand for cement continued to rise due to advancement towards independence and commencement of government development plans

  • Thus, cement manufacturing became one of the import-substitution industries to be considered for establishment in the country

  • Between (1957-1980), six other cement plants were commissioned

  • | Q | Abrams' law The rule stating that with given materials, curing, and testing conditions, concrete strength is inversely related to the ratio of water to cement

  • Low water-to-cement ratios produce higher strengths

  • Example: Absolute Volume of one sack of cement equals: 94 ÷ (3.15 x 62.4) = 0.478 cubic feet

  • Adjustable Hanger A forming accessory, a metal strip, used to suspend or support metal forms or metal form attachments when traditional methods of anchoring forms or form attachments cannot be used due to trenching or prior concrete placement

  • Admixture A material, other than aggregate, cement, or water, added in small quantities to the mix in order to produce some desired modifications, either to the physical or chemical properties of the mix or of the hardened product

  • Advanced Cement-Based Materials (ACBM) A center at Northwestern University established by the National Science Foundation to create new cement–based materials with improved properties

  • Aerated concrete Concrete formed using gas-forming admixtures such as powdered zinc or aluminum combined with calcium hydroxide or hydrogen peroxide that form hydrogen or oxygen bubbles in the cement mix
