Special Examinations By the end of the first year, students are required to take a comprehensive examination in basic algebra and analysis
The next step, admission to candidacy, is achieved by: 1) earning a total of at least 36 credits, including the mandatory courses in algebra and analysis; 2) passing the candidacy examination; and 3) writing a thesis proposal
The candidacy examination is normally passed by the end of the second year
This is an oral pass/fail examination, covering the material of at least four courses in the area of the thesis subject, as well as general knowledge of this same area
Dissertation Although the formal research period begins after passing the candidacy examination, students are encouraged to start their research as early as possible
