He would be the first president born under the flag of the United States
Four years later, when he was not yet 30, he was elected to the New York State Senate
Within a few years, he was leader of the powerful political group known as the Albany Regency, with control over 8, 000 state jobs
In 1816 he was appointed state attorney general, serving until 1819
He remained governor only 10 weeks, giving up the office and returning to Washington, D.C., to become secretary of state and political manager to President Andrew Jackson
Calhoun, and Van Buren resigned as secretary of state in 1831 to allow Jackson to reorganize his cabinet to get rid of Calhoun's supporters
In response, Jackson had withdrawn government funds from the Bank of the United States, located in Philadelphia and in large part privately owned, and deposited them in state banks around the country
