    Papa's Potting Shed: Herb Topiaries
Joi Becker presents various types of topiaries and provides methods of growing them.

  •   TYPES OF TOPIARIES   Most handbooks on topiaries state that there are basically two types of topes - 'outside' and 'inside.' The former are typically hardy shrubs or trees planted in the ground; the latter are potted plants, and thus portable

  • Many lovely herb gardens have a rose tree (a rose grown as a 'standard') or other non-herb topiary as a centerpiece, but since this is on Papa Geno's WebSite, I will stick primarily to topes fashioned from live herb plants

  • Pruned Topiaries   These are also called 'standards' or 'shorn topiaries.' Using woody stemmed plants they create the classic look of the structured topiary often shown in botanical prints

  • The main stem of the plant provides support and it can be shaped into balls, spirals, cones and for the truly ambitious - animals

  •   Method: For standards choose young plants with a straight central stem

  • Plant in a 4' pot and insert a narrow stake

  • Tie the plant to the stalk, making sure that the ties do not bind the tender stem

  • When the plant reaches it desired height pinch out the growing tip, and as it fills out, continue to prune to promote fullness

    Herb Guide
Guide sheets for dozens of common herbs: description, cultivation, harvesting,
drying, and medicinal, culinary and craft uses.

  • BORAGE (buy borage seeds) I bought my first packet of borage seeds many years ago, and grew the plants as a companion to tomatoes

  • I was mislead by an error on the seed packet that said that the plant should not be consumed because it is poisonous, and grew the plant only for it's properties as a companion and it's appearance

  • CALENDULA (buy calendula seeds) Calendula is also called pot marigold, but don't confuse this plant with the marigolds grown in your annual bed ( Tagetes )

  • These properties alone are enough to make the plant an essential addition to your herb garden, but it is also has several cosmetic uses

  • It looks great in a wildflower meadow and is frequently used in conservation projects and roadside planting

  • Bergamot is becomming very popular for use in roadside planting and conservation projects

Growing Herbs in the Home Garden
Offers information for beginning herb gardeners on history, cultivation, harvesting,
    and uses of herbs.

  • Odd as it seems now, the early Dutch settlers in this country intentionally planted chives in the meadows so cows would give chive-flavored milk

  • This resulted in an exchange of slips, seeds, and plants

  • American Indians knew uses for almost every wild, nonpoisonous plant, but they used the plants chiefly for domestic purposes -- tanning and dyeing leather and eating

  • Definition of Herb From the botanical viewpoint, an herb is a seed plant that does not produce a woody stem like a tree

  • For home use, the plant parts are used intact, often to scent linens or clothing

  • Beginning herb gardeners may have a problem deciding which herbs to plant because of the large number of herbs from which to select

  • A quick check of your supermarket shelf will give you some idea of the types of herbs used in cooking and also will serve as a planting guide

  • You might like to grow some of the more colorful and frequently used herbs, such as parsley and purple basil, as border plants

  • A diagram of the area and labels for the plants also will help

  • Plants, such as chervil, fennel, lovage, and summer savory, require moderate amounts of fertilizer
