    Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind
Review that originally appeared in the Paris Woman Journal.

  • A TV producer with popular but now cancelled shows like The Dating Game and The Gong Show to his credit, he's widely condemned as the King of Schlock, and the title unnerves him

  • Before long, he's sold ABC on his idea for The Dating Game , a huge success that inspires a spin-off, The Newlywed Game , neither of which have the impact of The Gong Show , the 'talent' contest generally regarded as the forerunner for much of the muck currently polluting American television

  • But even before his first show hits the air, he attracts the attention of a CIA agent who believes Barris has the right stuff to kill for his country

  • Clooney himself is aces as Barris's hard-boiled sponser from the CIA and cloaks his character in so much mystery that it's certainly possible he exists only in the same imagination that envisioned The Gong Show

  • Critics charge The Gong Show gave people an opportunity to humiliate themselves for a few minutes of fame

Comedy and Ventriloquism with a Message.

  • He's appeared on The Best of BET Comic View , HBO Def Comedy Jam , The Extreme Gong Show and other pilot TV programs

  • In his hard to find spare moments Willie spends his time doing community service by performing at local schools in the Los Angeles area, and writing and developing screenplays and show concepts for himself and his partner Woody

  • FWW and Gong Show had finished 4th and 5th respectively in the indoor season, and with the top 3 teams having chosen to ply their trades in higher divisions, the two were amongst the pre-season favourites to contend for the division 5 crown

    Paul Winchell & Jerry Mahoney
Photos and detailed description of the classic "Winchell & Mahoney" television show.

  • One of the very first hit Saturday morning kid shows " I remember a version of the Paul Winchell show when I was a kid

  • I believe the show was in black-and-white unless it was just my TV

  • I was a big Paul Winchell fan and I had a wild imagination as a kid." - Frank Blefari Long before he was the voice of 'Tigger' in the Winnie the Pooh series, Paul Winchell and his puppet pal Jerry Mahoney starred in many early TV programs; the first was on NBC in 1948 called The Bigelow Show

  • In 1949, this half-hour variety show proto-type moved to CBS, airing Wednesdays at 9:00 before being cancelled that same year

  • In 1950, The Speidel Show (later The Paul Winchell-Jerry Mahoney Show ) debuted on NBC Tuesday nights as a thirty-minute variety show for adults and kids; it was on this show that Winchell introduced another popular character, Knucklehead Sniff

  • In a 1954 newspaper interview, Paul Winchell spoke of the problem he was having with the successful show - 'Gradually I found myself faced with the dilemma that comes to most ventriloquists

  • To that extent it was jealousy.' The Paul Winchell-Jerry Mahoney Show was moved to Sunday nights in 1953 but left the air in 1954 to be a part of the network's important new venture

  • EDINBURGH 2006 - BACK TO THE FUTON Great Scott! This August I'll be returning to the Edinburgh Festival for the world's first, only and last Back To The Future tribute show

  • There's a gig guide on the left, which lists where I'll be visiting soon for stand-up comedy and fine post-show kebab-eating

  • I'm working on my own sitcom for Radio 4 just now, and I've just finished a year of writing and script-editing for BBC Radio Entertainment (mostly Radio 2 and Radio 4 shows)

  • They included bits for The Now Show, jokes for The News Quiz, a full episode of Hudson & Pepperdine, and various other things listed on the cv below

  • - The writer of the first joke on the last episode of the longest-running topical sketch show of all time...! Ok

  • The News Huddlines on BBC Radio 2 is the longest-running topical sketch show of all time

  • - The writer/director of the most successful show in University of Nottingham's 100 yr history...! Ok

  • Bit of an in-joke, but hey, we couldn't perform it anywhere else, cos the show involved pilfering famous songs from musicals, and bastardising them

    Howerd, Frankie
Article offering stage, film and television credits, a biography, a photograph
    and suggested further reading.

  • He toured the provinces in a stage show For The Fun Of It in 1946 and although placed at the bottom of the bill he hit upon the clever ruse of changing his name from Howard to Howerd

  • Many of his comic contemporaries were crowding the radio waves and some (like Charlie Chester and Terry-Thomas) had even got their own shows on the increasingly popular medium of television

  • In the space of a year he was re-established as a major comedy star, and became a familiar face on television as a guest star or leading artist in variety shows

  • He headlined his own show again, Frankie Howerd (1964/66), this time with scripts from Galton and Simpson, mixing an introductory stand-up routine with a long- form sketch continuing the same theme

  • Later the series The Frankie Howerd Show (1969) was made by ATV for the ITV network and Howerd also appeared in one-off entertainments such as The Howerd Hour (1968) made by ABC for the ITV network

  • The shows (scripted by Talbot Rothwell, one of the writers of the bawdy Carry On ..

  • film series) were peppered with innuendo and smutty references and also allowed Howerd free rein to talk directly to camera and deliver his typically weary asides about how awful the show was

  • Now as a former Gong Show addict, I'll admit it, my only complaint is that we didn't get more re-creations of all those famous moments from the show

  • George Clooney proves he's quite a talented director and Sam Rockwell shows us he's a world-class actor with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

    USATODAY.com - 12 'Idol' finalists surge ahead
Simon Cowell picks Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, and Mandisa as most talented.

  • The program clobbered the Winter Olympics and the Grammy Awards, and two audition shows drew more 18-to-49-year-olds, TV's money demographic, than the usually dominant Oscars

  • And he says the personalities make the show more compelling

  • 'You can't underestimate the degree to which people are drawn to a show about singing

  • This year, it has a new energy that feels more real.' For Jim Murphy, 46, of Auburn, N.Y., Idol 'reminds me of the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in that you root for people to overcome adversity and shine, and in that it is one of the few shows that people of all ages can watch together

  • 'When the show was at 12 finalists last year, you could see which six or seven needed to go, ' Daily Variety associate editor Phil Gallo says

  • That is evident in Idol -spawned recording efforts that have not matched the show's soaring TV trajectory

  • Subsequent winners have not fared as well as the inaugural Kelly Clarkson, and finalists who don't land in the top two spots 'are lucky to sell 12, 000 copies of a record.' Mitch Schneider, who heads the MSO music publicity firm, which represents such artists as Ozzy Osbourne, David Bowie and Depeche Mode, is impressed with the show but suspects its high notes will sour before long

    'UHF' (PG-13)
Review by Rita Kempley [Washington Post].

  • [an error occurred while processing this directive] 'UHF' (PG-13) By Rita Kempley Washington Post Staff Writer July 21, 1989 'Weird Al' Yankovic lampoons trash TV -- cheesy commercials, game shows, Geraldo Rivera -- in 'UHF, ' a comedy so dumb you're embarrassed to laugh

  • Or there's used-car king Crazy Eddie's sales pitch: 'If nobody comes down and buys a car from me in the next hour, I'm going to club this baby seal.' Or there's the home repair show host who cuts off a finger while demonstrating a buzz saw

  • Yankovic, an advocate of the Monty Python and Mel Brooks schools of comedy, favors yechy burlesque, and 'UHF, ' with its scant plot, is basically a variety show with skits, sight gags and gross stuff

  • Stanley Spadowski (Michael Richards), fired as Channel 8's janitor, becomes the area's favorite kiddie show host and George its top-rated talksploitation host, tackling such topics as 'Nazi lesbian hookers abducted by UFOs and forced into weight loss programs.' Other programming includes the made-for-TV movies, 'Conan the Librarian' and 'Gandhi II, ' and a game show, 'Wheel of Fish.' Yankovic, best known for his rock music sendups, co-wrote this bit of B-movie Americana with sidekick Jay Levey, directing with 'Gong Show' finesse

CNN - Fox FX reaches for zaniness in new fall programming - August ...
    [CNN]

  • SITES: MORE SERVICES: DISCUSSION: SITE GUIDES: FASTER ACCESS: WEB SERVICES: Fox FX reaches for zaniness in new fall programming Web posted on: Tuesday, August 18, 1998 5:53:23 PM LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Fox's FX is one of the cable networks that recycles broadcast network shows, and it has picked some winners

  • But like many others, the network must develop its own programming to survive -- and it has reached toward the zany for three of this fall's new shows

  • Offbeat magicians Penn and Teller host 'Sin City Spectacular' Viva Variety 'Penn & Teller's Sin City Spectacular' is a full-blown variety show

  • Taped in Las Vegas, it comes complete with showgirls, dancers, singers and a few magic tricks

  • Alice Cooper, the heavy metal snake-handler, was called upon to be a celebrity assistant, but the show also includes musical guests like dark rocker Lou Reed

  • 'In the '60s, you know, you had this -- you'd have, you know, James Brown on the same show with Alan King, and that was -- that made perfect sense, and it still makes perfect sense, ' Jillette said

  • 'We thought it was time to have that wonderful combination of an opera singer and a puppet and a band all in one show in a real statement that there was indeed one show business

Weird Al Yankovic's "UHF" (shot in Tulsa!)
Information about making the film with pictures and viewer comments.

  • to promote their new show, 'Married..

  • We show it on a wide screen TV with surround sound

  • Cummins asked, 'Are they still showing that thing?' No doubt about it, UHF is still popular

  • (from Guestbook 94) Jolie Ancel of Burbank, CA said: I am a Segment Producer on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and am always looking for the unusual/human-interest type guest

  • He has indeed appeared on Letterman several times doing his head-standing thing, as well as more than one appearance on the Chick Show

  • Fletcher's pious TV commentary with a tape showing his true feelings about the viewers

  • C ritics occasionally lambast a particular movie or TV show as 'lowbrow', tacitly highlighting their own more 'refined' taste ('The Gong Show' was a victim of this tendency in its day)

Zork Grand Inquisitor Review and Walkthrough
    Review, walkthrough, and puzzle solutions.

  • Even the installation and game preferences menus show that an extra effort has been expended

  • Given the fantasy setting, most of the FMV acting is satisfactory, with a nine-member cast headed by TV actors Dirk Benedict, the 50ish veteran of The A Team and Battlestar Galactica , and Rip Taylor ( The Gong Show ) as the Grand Inquisitor's sidekick, Undersecretary Wartle

  • Some useful keystrokes: Spacebar Skip video sequence F8 Return held item to inventory F7 Show current score and rank Right-click the mouse to access the inventory window Not everything is shown in this walkthrough

  • Turn around and pick up the Griff totem lying on the path, then watch the video sequence showing his capture by the Inquisition

  • You'll see a video sequence showing Jack saved from totemization by a power failure in Foozle caused by the dam's destruction
