A TV producer with popular but now cancelled shows like The Dating Game and The Gong Show to his credit, he's widely condemned as the King of Schlock, and the title unnerves him
Before long, he's sold ABC on his idea for The Dating Game , a huge success that inspires a spin-off, The Newlywed Game , neither of which have the impact of The Gong Show , the 'talent' contest generally regarded as the forerunner for much of the muck currently polluting American television
But even before his first show hits the air, he attracts the attention of a CIA agent who believes Barris has the right stuff to kill for his country
Clooney himself is aces as Barris's hard-boiled sponser from the CIA and cloaks his character in so much mystery that it's certainly possible he exists only in the same imagination that envisioned The Gong Show
Critics charge The Gong Show gave people an opportunity to humiliate themselves for a few minutes of fame

In 1949, this half-hour variety show proto-type moved to CBS, airing Wednesdays at 9:00 before being cancelled that same year
In 1950, The Speidel Show (later The Paul Winchell-Jerry Mahoney Show ) debuted on NBC Tuesday nights as a thirty-minute variety show for adults and kids; it was on this show that Winchell introduced another popular character, Knucklehead Sniff
In a 1954 newspaper interview, Paul Winchell spoke of the problem he was having with the successful show - 'Gradually I found myself faced with the dilemma that comes to most ventriloquists
To that extent it was jealousy.' The Paul Winchell-Jerry Mahoney Show was moved to Sunday nights in 1953 but left the air in 1954 to be a part of the network's important new venture

He toured the provinces in a stage show For The Fun Of It in 1946 and although placed at the bottom of the bill he hit upon the clever ruse of changing his name from Howard to Howerd
Many of his comic contemporaries were crowding the radio waves and some (like Charlie Chester and Terry-Thomas) had even got their own shows on the increasingly popular medium of television
In the space of a year he was re-established as a major comedy star, and became a familiar face on television as a guest star or leading artist in variety shows
He headlined his own show again, Frankie Howerd (1964/66), this time with scripts from Galton and Simpson, mixing an introductory stand-up routine with a long- form sketch continuing the same theme
Later the series The Frankie Howerd Show (1969) was made by ATV for the ITV network and Howerd also appeared in one-off entertainments such as The Howerd Hour (1968) made by ABC for the ITV network
The shows (scripted by Talbot Rothwell, one of the writers of the bawdy Carry On ..
film series) were peppered with innuendo and smutty references and also allowed Howerd free rein to talk directly to camera and deliver his typically weary asides about how awful the show was
