COPPER PIPE

About of COPPER PIPE

Glossary and Installation Tips
List of plumbing related terms.

  • A kind of tubing or pipe connection where a nut, and then a sleeve or ferrule is placed over a copper or plastic tube, and is compressed tightly around the tube as the nut is tightened, forming a positive grip and seal without soldering

  • Make sure that you have a good fit and length, and that the tube or pipe is inserted fully into the fitting before you tighten the nut, because once the sleeve is formed, it cannot be removed from the tube

  • To replace a stop valve of this type, you usually will have to use the existing nut and sleeve unless the pipe extends far enough from the wall to cut it off and install new

  • It's best to wait until you have to cut the copper pipe, because if it gets too short, you will have to go into the wall to replace it

  • Escutcheon Usually a decorative metal trim ring that goes around a pipe where it comes out of a wall, to improve the appearance

  • See: FMPX Female Pipe Swivel Connection

  • MPX Male Pipe Swivel Connection NOM Comp, Nominal Compression NOM usually refers to the Inside Diameter of trade sizes of Copper pipes and some CPVC pipes

  • Not for Iron Pipe Connections

  • trade size copper pipe is 5/8' O.D

Polybutylene Plumbing - What is Polybutylene?
Information for homeowners to determine if the have defective polybutylene plumbing
    in their homes.

  • Due to the low cost of the material and ease of installation, polybutylene piping systems were viewed as 'the pipe of the future' and were used as a substitute for traditional copper piping

  • Most are shown with pipe attached

  • Most probably, the piping was installed in about one in every four or five homes built during the years in which the pipe was manufactured

  • How to Tell If You Have Poly Exterior - Polybutylene underground water mains are usually blue, but may be gray or black (do not confuse black poly with polyethelene pipe)

  • It is wise to check at both ends of the pipe because we have found cases where copper pipe enters the home, and poly pipe is at the water meter

  • Obviously, both pipes were used and connected somewhere underground

  • Warning: In some regions of the country plumbers used copper 'stub outs' where the pipe exits a wall to feed a fixture, so seeing copper here does not mean that you do not have poly

  • See the below of polybutylene pipes and fittings

  • Will the Pipes Fail? While scientific evidence is scarce, it is believed that oxidants in the public water supplies, such as chlorine, react with the polybutylene piping and acetal fittings causing them to scale and flake and become brittle

The History of Plumbing - Egypt
    Article describing plumbing.

  • The basin emptied through a copper pipe to a trough below

  • The pipe was made of 1/16' beaten copper to a diameter of a little under 2'

  • Also found within a pyramid temple built by King Tutankhamen's father-in-law at Abusir, was a brass drain pipe running from the upper temple along the connecting masonry causeway to the outer temple on the river

  • After 5, 000 years, water still fills the canal through underground pipes from the River Nile

  • Coppersmiths: The ancient Egyptians were early developers of pipe and the techniques of making copper alloys

  • In the begimling, of course, their pipe and fittings were very crude

  • Like the Mesopotamians, they used clay pipe made from a combination of straw and clay

  • As they improved upon their clay sewer pipe, the Egyptians were able to drain the low-lying portions of the Nile Valley, and gradually the entire region evolved into a fertile garden

  • They melted metal in a crucible over a super-hot fire, the intense heat provided by men fanning the fire with blowpipes made of reeds tipped with clay

    Making Scottish small pipes
Instructions for making Scottish small pipes from CPVC and brass tubing.
Includes diagrams, assembly instructions, and sound files.

  • by Eric Reiswig Over the winter of 1995-1996, i built a set of Scottish small pipes using CPVC plumbing pipe and brass tubing

  • Here are some step-by-step 'how i did it' guides to my Scottish small pipe plans

  • These are only a guide to what i did with my one (so far) pipemaking project, so take 'em with a grain of salt (although they have been shown to work, at least to my satisfaction...) Many tips of the proverbial hat are in order to all the folks, hobbyists and pros alike, who helped get these pipes off the ground: Dennis Havlena, John Wash, Nick Whitmer, David Daye, B.C

  • Click here for a of my completed pipes

  • Click here for a of me playing my pipes

  • (It'll very likely be the first pipe bag they've had to work on! :) Once everything is done, blow it up through the neck

  • Click here to see a of the pipebag..

  • This is how i made a bellows, patterned more-or-less after my 'real' uilleann pipe bellows

  • Cut a section of 3/4' CPVC pipe (the white kind) with a 15-20 degree angle on one end, to fit the hole in the 'bottom' half; glue it in with 5-minute epoxy

  • Was wound on a 2-1/2 inch grey PVC pipe and was excited from a 15kV neon transformer, a spark gap made of coat hanger and a plastic cup liberated from the lunch room

  • Lessons Learned: use more top load (toroid or sphere electrode capacitance); dont use black or gray PVC pipe; secondary coil should not be very long and thin, aspect ratio should be 3 - 5 ; secondary should have heavier wire, lower resistance, higher resonance

  • Top Load : Toroid, stovepipe, 8 x 24 inches

  • A water outlet works fine, just wrap the ground wire (make sure you've removed some of the insulation from the wire) around the pipe tightly and use masking tape to hold it

  • Even better, use a plumbers clamp to clamp the wire to the pipe

  • It is a copper pipe buried into the ground
