Description: Aluminium case, chain-driven (21 or 23 spline input shafts), driver's-side front output, part-time four wheel drive also known as "Command-Trac".

Il t-case (gruppo ripartitore/riduttore) NP/NV-231 equipaggia, oltre alle Jeep Cherokee XJ (prodotte dal 1987/'88 al 2001 ed equipaggiate con trazione integrale part-time inseribile Command-Trac), anche le versioni Command-Trac dei seguenti modelli Jeep: Comanche MJ, Wrangler YJ e TJ, GrandCherokee ZJ e WJ, Liberty/New Cherokee KJ.

Si tratta di uno dei più diffusi t-case Jeep. Anche se viene chiamato genericamente 231 o anche "Command-Trac" la sua denominazione esatta è NP-231 (NP sta per "New Process Gear") oppure NV-231 o NVG-231 per le nuove versioni (NV o NVG stanno per "New Venture Gear"). Nella parte posteriore del t-case c'è un etichetta ben in vista che ne consente l'identificazione. In questi casi comunque solo il nome è differente ma il t-case è lo stesso. Invece alcune Jeep GrandCherokee ZJ sono state equipaggiate con una versione denominate "NV-231 HD" (dove HD sta per "Heavy Duty"), si tratta di una versione più "robusta" messa probabilmente per sopportare meglio i potenti motori V8. Versioni "heavy duty" sono state assemblate anche da terze parti come "upgrade" per uso intensivo (la più nota è la versione assemblata e commercializzata da JB Conversions).

ATTENZIONE: Dal 1984 al 1987/'88 le Jeep Cherokee XJ, Comanche MJ e Wrangler YJ sono state equipaggiate con il t-case NP-207 (la microfiche e le info su questo t-case saranno inserite a breve nel sito in un'aposita pagina, nel frattempo è possibile consultare questa pagina). Le Jeep Cherokee XJ e Comanche MJ equipaggiate con sistema di trazione integrale part-time/full-time inseribile Select-Trac utilizzano il t-case NP/NV-242 che si trova anche sulle versioni con Select-Trac della GrandCherokee ZJ e WJ (le info su questo t-case saranno inserite in seguito, nel frattempo è possibile consultare questa pagina).
