Document History ------------------- V1.1: 11/18/98 Versus Mode stage select codes (PSX,SSat) added to Miscellany... Minor editing in a couple sections V1.0: 8/18/98 Launch version -------------- I. Basic Stuff -------------- I.1 What is this document? This document is an informational resource for Super Puzzle Fighter II X (Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo in U.S.). Super Puzzle Fighter II X is an SD (cute) Capcom puzzle game loosely based upon a fighting game (Super Street Fighter II X). Puzzle Fighter (as I shall refer to the game for the sake of brevity) belongs to the "falling pieces" genre of puzzle game, probably best defined by Compile's PuyoPuyo series of puzzle games... In this document, I'll be covering codes and secrets and other such information which may be of interest to Puzzle Fighter fans. I.2 Which versions of the game does this document cover? This document was written up specifically for the PSX version of Puzzle Fighter, but I will also be including supplementary data for the SSat and Arcade versions in certain sections. There also exists a Win95 version of Puzzle Fighter, but I've never played that version (both US and J versions exist, btw), so I can't really comment upon it; though I do suspect that at least some of the info from this document (like the CPU challenger conditions) should apply to it... Note: Since I don't own a SSat copy (or an arcade machine =) ) of Puzzle Fighter myself, it's possible that some of the SSat (or other non-PSX) info herein may have some minor errors of accuracy. So if you find anything that seems to require correction (whether SSat info or otherwise), let me know, and I'll look into it... I.3 A quick note on character names? Just a quick note that will hopefully clear up (or prevent) any potential confusion. In cases where a character's name differs in the Japanese and US versions of the game, I shall, for the sake of simplicity, stick to using the original (Japanese version) name for that character. Here's the list of characters where this will apply: Lei-Lei/Hsien-Ko, Anita/Amanda, Gouki/Akuma. I think Lin-Lin (Lei-Lei's sister) may also have been renamed, but if so, I don't know what her US version name would be, so... --------------------- II. Hidden Characters --------------------- Note on notation: (u,d,f,b) = (up,down, forward, back) on the d-pad/stick. And just to clear things up: on the 1P side, (b,f) = (left, right), and on the 2P side, (b,f) = (right, left). II.1 How can I play as Gouki? Note: While the CPU version of Gouki plays normally, the selectable version has a damage handicap (attacks do less damage). Gouki does have one of the best gem patterns in the game, though... and by chaining into your attacks, you can use the chain multiplicatives to compensate a bit for the handicap... (also, the handicap does seem to ease up a little for larger power gems) Okay, here's how to select Gouki as a playable character: 1) At the db corner of the character select screen (Morrigan or Felicia), press and hold SELECT (all the way through step 3). 2) Enter the following with the d-pad/stick: d,d,d,b,b,b. 3) Hit a button (while still holding SELECT). You can also free up an "easy" code via Street Puzzle Mode. The easy code for Gouki is: L1+button (anywhere on the character select screen). Releasing this easy code will also give you Gouki's voice and BGM test, his special win icon, and his extra costumes. Gouki's costume colors are: 1) black 2) red 3) purple 4) white Note on Gouki's damage handicap: The handicap is not a standard amount or percentage, seeming to vary according to the size and complexity of the attack. In general, it seems that the larger or more complex an attack is, the smaller the handicap will be. Most of the time, it seems to be between 20 and 40 percent (that much less damage), but for really small attacks, the handicap can be larger, and for really large attacks, it can be smaller, as well... SSat: The SSat info is the same as the PSX info, except that you would hold START instead of SELECT, and L instead of L1. Arcade: There is no easy code for Gouki (or any of the benefits from it), and the manual code is also different, as follows: A) At the default position (Ryu or Ken), press and hold the START button (continue to hold throughout the entire procedure). B) Move down one space (to Morrigan or Felicia). C) Once there, enter the following with the stick: b,d,b,d,b,d,b (hold the last "b" during the next step). D) Hit a button (while still holding START). II.2 How can I play as Dan? Note: As usual in Capcom games, Dan has some sort of handicap. In Puzzle Fighter, his handicap is that his attacks will produce only red gems (which makes it incredibly easy to send a huge attack back against him). So if you're playing as Dan, don't do any small or mid-sized attacks, but instead, set up one huge attack (incorporate chains, if at all possible) that will bury your opponent in one shot. Remember that if your opponent survives that attack, he/she just has to wait for a red crash gem to send it all back... so once you commit to a large attack, you'd better keep attacking until you defeat your opponent! The Dan code is the same as the Gouki code (see above), except for Step 2: 2) Enter the following with the d-pad/stick: b,b,b,d,d,d. You can also free up an "easy" code via Street Puzzle Mode. The easy code for Dan is: L1+R1+button (anywhere on the character select screen). Releasing this easy code will also give you Dan's voice and BGM test, his special win icon, and his extra costumes. Dan's costume colors are: 1) pink 2) green 3) orange 4) yellow SSat: The SSat info is the same as the PSX info, except that you would hold START instead of SELECT, and L+R instead of L1+R1. Arcade: There is no easy code for Dan (or any of the benefits from it). The manual code is the same as the Arcade Gouki code, except for Step C: C) Once there, tap the stick down 13 times. II.3 How can I play as Devilot? Note: While the CPU version of Devilot plays normally, the selectable version has a damage handicap (attacks do less damage). Devilot does have one of the best gem patterns in the game, though... and by chaining into your attacks, you can use the chain multiplicatives to compensate a bit for the handicap... (also, the handicap does seem to ease up a little for larger power gems) The Devilot code is the same as the Dan code (see above), except for Step 3: 3) When the character select timer is at 10, hit a button (while still holding SELECT. You can also free up an "easy" code via Street Puzzle Mode. The easy code for Devilot is: R1+button (anywhere on the character select screen). Releasing this easy code will also give you Devilot's voice and BGM test, her special win icon, and her extra costumes. Devilot's clothing highlights are: 1) lavender 2) light green 3) grey 4) pink Note on Devilot's damage handicap: The handicap is not a standard amount or percentage, seeming to vary according to the size and complexity of the attack. In general, it seems that the larger or more complex an attack is, the smaller the handicap will be. Most of the time, it seems to be between 20 and 40 percent (that much less damage), but for really small attacks, the handicap can be larger, and for really large attacks, it can be smaller, as well... SSat: The SSat info is the same as the PSX info, except that you would hold START instead of SELECT, and R instead of R1. Arcade: There is no easy code for Devilot (or any of the benefits from it). The manual code is the same as the Arcade Dan code, except for Step D: D) When the character select timer is at 10, hit a button (while still holding START). II.4 Is it possible to play as Lin-Lin? (Lin-Lin, btw, is Lei-Lei's sister) Yep. But maybe not quite in the way you suspected. Even though Lin-Lin appears in her human form in the "Thanks" screen you get at the end of a Hard mode (or Master Arcade mode) game, there doesn't appear to be a way to play Lin-Lin in her human form (note that the "Thanks" picture has no animation for her). However, you can play Lin-Lin in her paper ward form. Here's how: 1) Go to the db corner (Morrigan/Felicia) on the character select screen. 2) Press and hold the SELECT button (continue to hold throughout the entire procedure). 3) Move f until Lei-Lei is highlighted. 4) Press a button (while still holding SELECT). Lin-Lin plays like Lei-Lei, except that she doesn't speak. Lin-Lin is: 1) yellow 2) pale yellow 3) red 4) yellow (color 4 is *very* similar to 1; *maybe* a tinge towards orange...) SSat: The SSat code for Lin-Lin is the same as the PSX one, except that you would hold START instead of SELECT. II.5 What about Anita? (Anita, btw, is Donovan's ward) Yep. Same process as for Lin-Lin, except for step 3: 3) Move f until Donovan is highlighted. Anita plays like Donovan, except that she doesn't speak. She also has her own Super finish(!), where she tosses a bunch of doll heads at her opponent... At least, I *hope* they're doll heads... ^^;;; Anita's dress is: 1) bluish grey 2) light purple 3) lavender 4) grey (Anita has a bluish aura for costume 3...!) SSat: The SSat code for Anita is the same as the PSX one, except that you would hold START instead of SELECT. ----------------------- III. Hidden Challengers ----------------------- III.1 How can I get Devilot as a hidden challenger? Note: Devilot never appears in the normal CPU lineup; the CPU only plays her as a hidden challenger. In Arcade Battle mode, Devilot will appear as a hidden challenger before your 7th opponent, if you fulfill all of the following conditions without any continues or challengers: 1) For at least 1 round, time < 60 sec (Min Time < 60) 2) Max Chain >= 4 3) Max Gem >= 20 4) Win at least 1 round with a Super Finish (attack size >= 30) (note: I haven't specifically tested for the "time = 60" case, so it's possible that condition 1 might be "time <= 60" instead... or perhaps the "time = 60" case belongs to the Dan conditions instead... (shrug)) For 3-round or 5-round matches, it's okay to lose a round... but I think all of the above conditions have to be fulfilled in winning rounds for them to count... SSat: The Devilot CPU challenger conditions are the same as for the PSX version. Arcade: The Devilot CPU challenger conditions are the same as for the PSX version. III.2 How can I get Dan as a hidden challenger? Note: Dan never appears in the normal CPU lineup; the CPU only plays him as a hidden challenger. In Arcade Battle mode, Dan will appear as a hidden challenger before your 7th opponent, if you fulfill all of the following conditions without any continues or challengers: 1) For *all* rounds, time > 60 sec (Min Time > 60) 2) Max Chain < 4 3) Max Gem < 20 4) Win *no* rounds with a Super Finish For 3-round or 5-round matches, it's okay to lose a round... but I don't know whether it's okay to "ruin" one of the above conditions in a round you lose... SSat: The Dan CPU challenger conditions should be the same as for the PSX version. Arcade: The Dan CPU challenger conditions should be the same as for the PSX version. III.3 Is it possible to get both CPU challengers in the same game? Actually... yes. It's kinda tricky, though. You have to get Dan first, then use the Dan battle to complete the Devilot conditions. Since all four conditions are mutually exclusive, you're going to have to fulfill all four conditions during the Dan battle. Not very easy for a 1-round match (a 4-chain Super Finish involving a 20-gem, within 60 seconds...(!)). A lot more doable in a 3-round match... Still tricky, but doable. SSat: This should also be possible in the SSat version. Arcade: This should also be possible in the Arcade version. --------------------------- IV. Taunts, and Other Poses --------------------------- IV.1 Are there taunts in this game? Yes. To taunt your opponent, press the SELECT button. Taunts do no damage, though an opponent will react as if it did. Each character may taunt only once per round, except for Dan, who may taunt as much as he wants (however, his opponent will not react to his taunts). A character's taunt will be the same animation as a low-level attack. For those characters with more than one low-level attack (i.e. most of them), one of these will be chosen at random. SSat: I think taunting is done with the C button, but I'd have to check up on that... Aracde: The START button is used for taunting. IV.2 Is there any way to choose my character's win/lose pose? Not that I know of... but if anybody finds a code or something, do let me know. ------------- V. Miscellany ------------- V.1 Can I select the background stage in Versus Mode battles? Yep. Normally, the stage in any Versus Mode battle will be the default stage of the 1P character. (side note: In Arcade Mode player challenges, the stage will be the default stage of the challenger.) However, with the following codes, you can select any stage you want in Versus Mode... While the stage is being loaded (after handicaps are selected), hold R2+L2+SELECT, and one of the following: L1 Gouki stage R1 Devilot stage [triangle] Sakura stage [square] Felicia stage O Donovan stage X Lei-Lei stage left Ryu stage right Ken stage up Morrigan stage down Chun-Li stage (nothing) Dan stage The above listing should be in order of decreasing priority, for those cases where more than one of the above is held down... (of course, it's not possible to hold l+r or u+d, so the ordering of those is sort of arbitrary...) Also, if both players input stage select codes, it looks like the 1P code will be given priority. SSat: Should be the same as the PSX info (though I'm not sure about priority info), except that you should hold R+L+START instead of R2+L2+SELECT, and Z/Y/X/C/B/A instead of L1/R1/[triangle]/[square]/O/X. V.2 Are there any other codes in the game? Besides the hidden character codes and the versus stage select codes, the only other actual code I know of is the game-internal reset code. Simply hold START+SELECT (on either controller) for about a second, and the game should reset to the Capcom logo. SSat: I suspect that the standard A+B+C+START will work as a reset code, but I don't think I've ever specifically tried it, so... V.3 How do I select my character's costume? Each character has four costumes: Standard 1, Standard 2, Special 1, and Special 2. For the sake of simplicity, I've designated these costumes 1, 2, 3, and 4 (respectively). Here's which button corresponds to each costume: 1: O 2: X 3: [triangle] 4: [square] Costumes 3 and 4 have to be released through Street Puzzle Mode before they can be used. If you select costume 3 or 4 without it being available, it will default to 1 or 2, respectively. In cases where both players choose the same character and costume, the side which selected first will get that costume, while the other side will get an alternate color, as follows: main alt 1 - 2 2 - 1 3 - 1 4 - 2 Oh, one last note on costumes... if you've forgotten which costumes a particular character has, you can actually check out different costumes fairly quickly by utilizing Street Puzzle Mode. Once in the Player Select menu of Street Puzzle Mode, choose a character and a costume (which brings you to the Item Select menu). Now, instead of selecting a Street Puzzle item, press the [triangle] button to exit back to the Player Select menu. Repeat process with as many costumes as you want... Of course, this won't work with the hidden characters (they're not specifically included in the Player Select menu), which is why I've listed some costume information for them earlier in this document... SSat: If I recall correctly, costumes 1-4 were selected with: A, B, X, and Y, respectively. Arcade: The arcade version of Puzzle Fighter has only 2 costumes per character (costumes 1 and 2; selected, iirc, with the left and right buttons, respectively). V.4 Are there any special ending sequences? Well... there are no character endings, but there are other things. Here's a summary of what you get for finishing the game: Easy - Dan congratulations screen. Normal - End credits (w/intermission demos), and a text "Thank you for playing" screen. Hard - End credits (w/intermission demos), and a special "Thank you for playing" screen (group portrait). Master - (same as Hard) In addition, if you finish the game without continuing, you'll also get: Easy - (no difference) Normal - Character portrait during end credits. Hard - Character portrait during end credits. Master - Character portrait during end credits, and a special "Congratulations" message during the special "Thank you for playing" screen. SSat: The above info should be the same for the SSat version. Arcade: The above info should be the same for the Arcade version, except that there's no Master Arcade Mode. V.5 Is there an auto-save process? No, so make sure to manually save your game if you don't want to lose any newly made high scores (or whatever). SSat: I think the above is the case for the SSat version too. V.6 Is there any other neat stuff in the game? Sure, I guess. Well, noteworthy in some respect, anyway. =) Zabel (Raptor) in love - On Lei-Lei's stage, if Lei-Lei (or Lin-Lin) wins the match, Zabel (background, center) will get hearts in his eyes. I'm pretty sure this is also the case in the SSat and Arcade versions... Karaoke CD track - If you examine your game CD via the CD player function of your PSX, you'll find that track 2 is a playable CD track. Basically, this is a karaoke version of the Sakura image song "Kono Omoi wo Tsutaetai" ("I want you to know"). WARNING: track 1 is a data track, so don't play it on a normal CD player (the PSX CD player should automatically filter it out), lest you risk damage to your player, your speakers, and/or your hearing... I don't recall whether the SSat version had a CD track or not, though I think I once checked... Title screen demo order - Just in case anybody's interested, here's the order the title screen demos follow: Morrigan vs. Sakura Chun-Li vs. Morrigan Ryu vs. Chun-Li Ken vs. Ryu Lei-Lei vs. Ken Donovan vs. Lei-Lei Felicia vs. Donovan Sakura vs. Felicia ------------------------------------------------ The latest version of this file can be found at: Too Cute To Be a Fighting Game http://www.best.com/~ruyeyama/psx/tctbafg.html ------------------------------------------------
