The Edible Pond and Bog Garden - Plants For A Future
Provides a list of plants that can be grown in ponds or boggy ground.

  • 1057719 Database 7000 Plant Database Plants Gardening Links About Us Mailing list Help keep this site running by making a donation with paypal

  • The Edible Pond and Bog Garden The following list contains many plants, most of them either natives of Britain or naturalized here, that can be grown in ponds or boggy ground

  • Since we have only recently put in a pond and set up a bog garden we have little practical knowledge of many of the plants included here

  • The list is made up of some of the plants we intend to grow and, we hope you will agree, they show that there is a tremendous potential for food production from ponds and boggy areas

  • Many gardens already have ponds in them and, indeed, will probably contain several of the plants mentioned below

  • However, most of the plants listed here are very easy to cultivate, indeed, with some of them the problem will be more one of trying to contain them as they are very vigorous, and you should find that your pond, once established, will require very little attention

  • Just a couple of points that may be worth mentioning are: Ensure that your pond has at least one shallow side to enable creatures, especially amphibians, to get in and out easily; Ensure that it has several different levels (with at least one area more than two feet deep) to enable you to grow a variety of plants and to make sure that even in severe weather some of the water at the bottom of the pool is not frozen

    Steve's Fish Pond
Patio pond on the East coast of England. Photos and tips for fellow pond gardeners.

  • Now the rain can't flow in and I have another 3-4 inch deeper pond After it was built I used to hang plants in pots using hooks just above the liner (there are no shelves in the pond.)I didn't really like the look, get clear water and you see plant pots just under the surface

  • I decided to lay some football sized rocks approx' 18 inches from both ends, reducing the size of the rocks till they broke the surface by about 2 inches, placed a large piece of against the rocks to cover any gaps and filling with soil, (ordinary garden soil I have used). The Hessian is there to stop the soil coming out of the gaps into the main part of the pond Then planted it up

  • By the time the Hessian rots, the roots of the plants seal the gaps

  • All the plants do very well

  • The pond Lilly displays beautiful flowers yearly and without the need for "pond plant food"

  • I have to top the pond up quite often as it is heavily planted

  • >> Consider burying a pipe to an outside tap, so you don't have to keep dragging the hose pipe out for topping up.you'll be doing it a lot if its heavily planted

Hydrilla verticillata - The Perfect Aquatic Weed
History of its introduction into the United States, environmental impact, and
    management options.

  • Langeland Agronomy Department, Center for Aquatic Plants University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Gainesville, FL 32653 Cite as follows: Langeland, K.A

  • A highly specialized growth habit, physiological characteristics, and reproduction make this plant well adapted to life in submersed freshwater environments

  • Where the plant occurs, it causes substantial economic hardships, interferes with various water uses, displaces native aquatic plant communities, and adversely impacts freshwater habitats

  • Management techniques have been developed, but sufficient funding is not available to stop the spread of the plant or implement optimum management programs

  • INTRODUCTION Colonization of the land by ancestral marine autotrophs, which began long before the mid-Paleozoic, gave rise to evolution of vascular plants (Sculthorpe 1967)

  • A small group of plants, 1 per cent by most liberal estimates, returned to life in aquatic and marine environments (Sculthorpe 1967)

  • These fresh water and marine vascular plants, as a group, are particularly fascinating because of numerous adaptations they have evolved as they returned to the submersed environment

Water Primrose (Ludwigia hexapetala) - A Noxious Aquatic Weed in ...
Description, images, and control of this invasive plant in Washington.

  • It is a robust plant with bright yellow, showy flowers and willow-like leaves

  • Because of its showy yellow flowers, this plant is being sold as an ornamental species

  • Lake residents are strongly discouraged from planting water primrose in lakes, private ponds, in a flood zone, or in natural waterbodies

  • These plants are very invasive and aggressive and will form very dense mats of vegetation

  • As of January 2001, these plants will no longer be offered for sale in Washington

  • It reproduces by seeds and by plant fragments

  • Management The Longview Diking District uses mechanical methods to remove water primrose and other noxious plants from the canals and ditches in Longview/Kelso

  • If you think you have this plant growing around your pond or lake contact your county or local noxious weed control board for positive identification

Fragrant Water Lily (Nymphaea odorata) - A Troublesome Aquatic ...
Description and control of Fragrant Waterlily, an exotic invasive in Washington.

  • : General Information about the Fragrant Water Lily ( Nymphaea odorata ) Fragrant water lilies ( Nymphaea odorata ) are exceptionally beautiful water plants with floating leaves and large many-petaled fragrant blossoms

  • These plants are native to the eastern United States and it is believed that the water lily was introduced to Washington during the Alaska Pacific Yukon Exposition held in Seattle in the late 1800s

  • Because of their great beauty, water lilies have been intentionally planted in many Washington lakes, especially those lakes in western Washington

  • However, lake residents are strongly discouraged from planting fragrant waterlilies in lakes or natural waterbodies

  • Not only are water lilies aggressive plants, but sometimes "hitchhiker" plants such as hydrilla can also be introduced to our lakes when water lilies are planted

  • For this reason, planting water lilies in lakes is not recommended

  • Water lilies reproduce by seed and also by new plants sprouting from the large spreading roots (underground stems called rhizomes)

  • A planted rhizome will cover about a 15-foot diameter in about five years
