  • If you have any questions, or just want to hang around with a fabulous bunch of knitters, visit our friendly ! Our forum is an incredible community, often noted by members as the most fun and friendly knitting forum around

  • I want to offer my most heart-felt appreciation to our knitting forum members this month, for the incredible surprise gift that members sent me on March 1st! Dozens of members secretly collaborated in knitting for me to express appreciation for my work on this site! Thank you dear friends! Look for video icons like the ones below, throughout the site, and click them to watch the instructional knitting videos! = Video for Continental knitters (sample only) Pink videos are for knitters who hold the yarn in their left hand

  • The Continental method is the fastest knitting method (particularly fast when alternating knit and purl stitches) and is how I prefer to knit

  • = Video for English knitters (sample only) Blue videos are for knitters who hold the yarn in their right hand, and "throw" the yarn

Yes You Can Learn How To Knit!
Photos illustrate the basic steps in learning to knit.

  • A note to readers Dear Reader, You'll probably notice that my knitting lesson is missing a lot of photos toward the end

  • Thanks, Tom Knitting Books Vogue Knitting Recommended I haven't bought this book yet but intend to when I have a bit more time to devote to my hand knitting

  • Vogue Knitting is a thorough tome with excellent information on introductory through advanced hand knitting

  • While there are plenty of cheaper books available that will teach you to knit, most just teach you the basic stitches and perhaps provide a pattern or two and leave you to fend for yourself

  • This book provides enough hand knitting information to serve at least my modest needs for life

  • I recommend it to everyone from the beginner interested in learning to knit through the advanced knitter looking for a good reference book

  • I may give my father (who has been knitting for 30 years now) a copy for Christmas one of these years

  • Stitch 'N Bitch Recommended This fun, stylish book gives simple, concise instructions for knitting and then provides several straightforward projects to knit

  • It's perhaps not as thorough as Vogue Knitting, yet it's cheaper, and good fun

    Knit Powers to Peace
Sharing knitting and other crafty projects.

  • I learned how to knit from The Stitch n Bitch Knitter's Handbook, and since then it's the only book I use as a reference

  • I have Vogue Knitting, but I really don't use it the way I use Stitch n Bitch.I just realized that I haven't shared the story of how I learned to knit on this blog

  • I didn't know how to knit, I didn't have any needles or yarn, but I knew that I would like the book

  • In fact, they made me decide to go buy some yarn.I read that big needles and big yarn goes faster, and that it was good for ADD knitters

  • Great! Now I needed to figure out how to knit

  • I had no idea what I was doing, and it took me a lot longer to learn the knit stitch than to learn the cast on

  • The good thing was that every time I ripped it off the needles, I got to practice my cast on again! One night, I took my knitting to Max's fraternity house because I was already obsessed

  • I still didn't know how to knit, but I was obsessed

  • His mom saw me knitting and said to her son 'remember when you used to knit?' Another knitter! I begged him to show me how to do the knit stitch

    Hand Knit Hose
Hand knit hose pattern based on Queen Elizabeth's stockings. Includes historical
    background.

  • HAND KNIT HOSE a Knitted Stocking Pattern By Donna Flood Kenton In the second year of Queen Elizabeth, 1560, her silk woman, Mistress Montague, presented Her Majesty with a pair of black knit silk stockings for a new year’s gift; the which, after a few days of wearing, pleased Her Highness to well that she sent for Mistress Montague and asked her where she had them, and if she could help her to any more; who answered, saying: 'I made them very carefully of purpose only for Your Majesty; and seeing these please you so well, I will presently get more in hand.' 'Do so, ' quoth the Queen, 'for indeed I like silk stockings so well, because they are pleasant, fine and delicate, that henceforth I will wear no more cloth stockings.' And from that time unto her death the Queen never wore any more cloth hose, only silk stockings

  • Knitting was well established in the Channel Islands by the time Elizabeth took the throne in 1558

  • In particular, the island of Jersey had achieved acclaim for their knitted wool hose, called 'Jersey stocks.' It was noted that on February 8, 1586, Mary, Queen of Scots, wore a white pair of Jersey hose covered by a pair of sea-blue socks with silver clocks

  • But that doesn't mean they're easy to work with: The more eyelashes and nubbles and danglies hanging off a yarn, the harder it is to knit

  • Novelty yarns are terrible for splitting; even worse is when you discover you've attempted to knit a 'dangler', rather than the actual thread of the yarn
