All the schools were privately owned and operated, as no provision was made for support until 1862, when School Districts #1 and #2 were established in east and west Denver, respectively
In 1864, however, a number of settlers met at Richard Little's cabin to organize what would become School District #6, also known as the Littleton School District
In 1889, Littleton School District #6 was formally incorporated
School District enrollment in the 1890s reached 222, although average daily attendance was only 153
This, in turn, was replaced by the current Littleton High School in 1956, and in 1985 the Grant Street School became the District's Education Services Center
Today, Littleton School District #6 includes 23 schools serving more than 16, 000 students
A teaching staff of 961 and 665 administrative and support personnel make the District one of Littleton's largest employers
