Defining Atopic Dermatitis Atopic dermatitis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that affects the skin
The word 'dermatitis' means inflammation of the skin
In atopic dermatitis, the skin becomes extremely itchy
As some children with atopic dermatitis grow older, their skin disease improves or disappears altogether, although their skin often remains dry and easily irritated
In others, atopic dermatitis continues to be a significant problem in adulthood
Although atopic dermatitis may occur at any age, it most often begins in infancy and childhood
Atopic dermatitis is often referred to as 'eczema, ' which is a general term for the several types of inflammation of the skin

It is not yet known what causes it, but it does seem to run in families that have a history of asthma, allergies or atopic dermatitis
It is a chronic disease, but only about a third of children with infantile atopic dermatitis will continue to have problems with it as they get older
Steroid Creams These are the main treatments for atopic dermatitis when it flares up, and should be applied right after baths (and before a lubricant) and again during the day as directed
Itching Relief Atopic dermatitis is a very itchy rash, and scratching usually makes it worse, so it is important to help control itching
DermNet NZ: Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
Information about this skin condition and its treatment.
Search: | Seborrhoeic Dermatitis What is seborrhoeic dermatitis Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a common, harmless, scaling rash affecting the face, scalp and other areas
The American spelling is ‘seborrheic’, and ‘dermatitis’ is sometimes called ‘eczema’
Dandruff (also called ‘pityriasis capitis’) is an uninflamed form of seborrhoeic dermatitis
Seborrhoeic dermatitis may appear at any age after puberty
However, sometimes it is difficult to tell psoriasis from seborrhoeic dermatitis on the face, scalp and chest and your doctor may diagnose an overlap condition, known as ‘sebopsoriasis’
What does seborrhoeic dermatitis look like? Within the scalp, seborrhoeic dermatitis causes ill-defined dry pink or skin coloured patches with yellowish or white bran-like scale
Seborrhoeic dermatitis is common within the eyebrows, on the edges of the eyelids (blepharitis), inside and behind the ears and in the creases beside the nose
Seborrhoeic dermatitis What is the cause of seborrhoeic dermatitis? Seborrhoeic dermatitis is believed to be an inflammatory reaction related to a proliferation of a normal skin inhabitant, a yeast called (formerly known as Pityrosporum ovale )

In these same places, all swimmers are usually exposed to the risk of cercarial dermatitis as well
The larval parasite called a 'cercaria' is released by aquatic or amphibious (moves both on land and water) snails and causes dermatitis when it mistakenly penetrates a person's skin rather than it rightful host, usually a duck
In unusual circumstances, different algae, chemical pollutants and sewage may cause dermatitis that is indistinguishable from cercarial dermatitis
Thus, it is important, when visiting the pharmacist or physician, to mention that the itching dermatitis may have been acquired by swimming or bathing
InteliHealth - Seborrheic Dermatitis (Seborrhea)
Provides general information on SD, such as symptoms, diagnosis, expected duration,
prevention, and treatment.
Seborrheic Dermatitis (Seborrhea) Seborrhea is a form of skin inflammation (dermatitis) that causes a red, oily, flaking skin rash in areas of the body where glands in the skin called sebaceous glands are most abundant — the scalp, face and groin
The causes of seborrheis dermatitis are unclear
A Treatment for Dandruff and Scalp Itch
Provides information on dandruff and its causes. Also offers personal tips on
how to banish the complaint using household vinegar.
But care must be taken not to confuse simple dandruff with other conditions that also cause flaking of the scalp, such as seborrheic dermatitisor psoriasis
"Redness and itching is actually seborrheic dermatitis, and it frequently occurs around the folds of the nose and the eyebrow areas, not just the scalp." Sometimes itching of the scalp is also experienced
While mild dandruff may be caused by overactive oil glands, recent evidence suggests that the more severe dandruff associated with seborrheic dermatitis may be caused by an overabundance of Pityrosporum ovale, a yeast-like organism found on healthy scalp in low numbers
With the increased scaling and oiliness of seborrheic dermatitis, these yeast organisms thrive and multiply, aggravating inflammation and scaling
Seasonal changes, stress, and certain diseases seem to affect seborrheic dermatitis
If dandruff flakes are greasy and yellow, the probable cause is the skin condition known as seborrheic dermatitis; dry, thick lesions consisting of large, silvery scales may be traced to the less common psoriasis of the scalp
NIOSH/Pub 98-113/Latex Allergy A Prevention Guide
NIOSH's newest publication on latex allergy.
The most common reaction to latex products is irritant contact dermatitis - the development of dry, itchy, irritated areas on the skin, usually the hands
Irritant contact dermatitis is not a true allergy
Allergic contact dermatitis (sometimes called chemical sensitivity dermatitis) results from the chemicals added to latex during harvesting, processing, or manufacturing
Neither irritant contact dermatitis nor chemical sensitivity dermatitis is a true allergy
However, they may reduce reactions to chemical additives in the latex (allergic contact dermatitis)

ALLSA: Atopic Dermatitis
Introduction, pathogenesis, clinical features, history, diagnosis and management.
[ ] Atopic Dermatitis Page 1 Written by Dr Cassim Motala Page 1 1
Atopic dermatitis is a form of eczema that is most prevalent during infancy and childhood (paediatric cases: 80% by 1 year of age, 95% by years)
Pathogenesis [ ] The exact pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis is unknown
Infection in atopic dermatitis Staphylococcus aureus (S
aureus) is a frequent cause of secondary infection in atopic dermatitis
Patients with atopic dermatitis are colonised with S
aureus and the organism has been isolated from infected eczema, from chronic lesions and from clinically normal skin in patients with atopic dermatitis
Circulating antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies have been found in up to 30% of patients with atopic dermatitis and these may cause mast cell degranulation via an IgE-mediated reaction
aureus isolated from patients with atopic dermatitis has the ability to produce superantigens
Herpetic lesions in atopic dermatitis are much more widespread than the typical herpes labialis seen in non-atopic people
Natural History [ ] Atopic dermatitis usually becomes less severe in the teens, and may be completely 'outgrown' around puberty

HealthWorld Online: Eczema: Dermatitis
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition that usually appears on
the scalp, face, neck, or creases of the elbows, wrists, and knees.
Eczema: Dermatitis © (Excerpted from Healthy Self: The Guide to Self-Care and Wise Consumerism ) Superficial inflammation of the skin, characterized by vesicles (when acute), redness, edema, oozing, crusting, scaling and usually itching
The terms eczema and dermatitis are the cause of much confusion amongst students and practitioners alike! Here we shall follow the broad guidelines given in the Merck Manual and use them synonymously to mean a superficial inflammation of the skin
In the latter cases it is possible to solve the problem by avoidance of the surface irritant, if it can be identified! Such problems, often referred to as Contact Dermatitis, are commonly caused by, for example: industrial solvents, dyes, nickel and other metals, leather tanning chemicals, some soaps
