Though several minor writers and personalities are still alive, to all extent and purposes the Beat Generation is dead

To Herbert Huncke, who took the word from show business and carnival slang, 'beat' meant 'exhausted, at the bottom of the world, looking up or out, sleepless, wide- eyed, perceptive, rejected by society, on your own, streetwise.' Jack Kerouac took Huncke's word and expanded on it in 1948 when, according to John Clellon Holmes, he referred to theirs as 'a beat generation'

Holmes's 1952 article, 'This Is the Beat Generation, ' used Kerouac's creation and launched it upon an unsuspecting world

Alfred Kazin called the Beat Generation 'a family of friends, ' a term not unknown to most lesbians and gay males

Burroughs was the Beat Generation's most innovative writer

Bresciani's treatment of the modern revival of Confucianism.

In his 652-page book, Bresciani describes the thought of eleven individual Chinese philosophers, and then adds another chapter on Third Generation thinkers, who continue the movement up to the present time

Most of these thinkers have passed away, but Third Generation philosophers, like Du Weiming, continue the tradition of the New Confucian Movement

Bresciani divides the eleven philosophers, whose thought he describes in his book, into three generations

The first generation, which he dates from 1921 to 1949, include Liang Shuming, Zhang Junmai, Xiong Shili, Feng Youlan and He Lin

The second generation (1950-1979) includes Qian Mu, Tang Junyi, Mou Zongsan and Xu Fuguan

Du Weiming and other modern day philosophers, both inside and outside of China, would be considered members of the third generation (1980-the present) of the movement

These thinkers are famous for their writings, which had an influence on later generations of Chinese intellectuals
