Giuseppe Bonghi Biografia di Torquato Tasso Torquato Tasso nasce a Sorrento nel 1544
Nel 1565 il Tasso entra alla corte degli Este; i primi anni sono felici, e tale ritrovata tranquillità consente al poeta di terminare la "Gerusalemme liberata" (1575) e di scrivere i "Discorsi dell'arte poetica"; due anni prima era stata rappresentata la favola pastorale in 5 atti "Aminta"
Ma Tasso perde ben presto la serenità e comincia a dare segni di esaurimento: la sua principale preoccupazione sono le critiche alla Gerusalemme e il timore che l'opera non venga giudicata ortodossa dalla Chiesa
Soffrendo di manie di persecuzione, viene rinchiuso nelle segrete del castello nel 1577; riuscito ad evadere, viaggia per tutta l'Italia, ma nel 1579 è di nuovo a Ferrara; deluso dall'accoglienza degli Este, attacca verbalmente il duca che lo rinchiude nuovamente, anche per motivi politici (temeva che le professioni di eresia di Tasso gli attirassero l'ira del papa, che già mostrava interesse per i suoi possedimenti)

The atmosphere was suitable for the composition of the 'Gerusalemme liberata', on which Tasso continued to work after his return to the Court of Duke Alphonso II at Ferrara
After 1575, in addition to his literary anxieties, Tasso suffered from intense religious scruples
When at length Tasso left the asylum and was received by the Gonsaga, he began about 1586 to revise his poem and after six years he transformed it into the 'Gerusalemme conquistata', an inferior work
Finally, accepting the invitation of Cardinal Aldobrandini, Tasso went to Rome, where he died in the Convent of Sant' Onofrio, under the protection of the pope, the day before he was to be crowned as poet laureate

Torquato Tasso and Giordano Bruno, though usually included among the authors of the later Renaissance, may perhaps be better classed with the moderns
In their day the spirit of the Renaissance was worn out, and was replaced by the nervous fear which is visible all through the life of Tasso
