George Martin Portfolio
His work and production history is featured. Sound clips from three interviews.
George Martin Portfolio George Martin, head of A&R at Parlophone and the producer of all of the Beatles records except for Let It Be, originally went to work for EMI in 1950, after working in the BBC Music Library
In that same year, Martin became, at 29, the youngest manager of an EMI label, when Oscar Preuss retired
In the late fifties, Martin kept Parlophone in the black with novelty and comic dialogue records, featuring artists including the Goons and Peter Sellers
It was most likely with finding a group like that in mind when George Martin consented to that first meeting with Brian Epstein and his demo tape of the Beatles
Although he wasn't initially impressed with the numbers on the tape Brian Epstein played him that day, Martin detected a rough sound that he liked and set up an audition for June 6, 1962 at Abbey Road
Used to the Liverpudlian humor of the comedy records he produced, George Martin took an instant liking to the boys that first day of their first EMI recording session
The Beatles, although under contract to make records for EMI, continued to be produced by George Martin at AIR

The Last Hurrah of the Fifth Beatle: As He Retires from Producing, Sir George Martin Remembers His Time with the Fab Four
| Inductee: George Martin (producer; born 1/3/26) Although disk jockey Murray the K dubbed himself the 'Fifth Beatle, ' that title properly belongs to producer George Martin
With the exception of 's post-production on Let It Be , every Beatles recording-from the first single ('Love Me Do') to the last album ( Abbey Road )-was produced by Martin
Martin's expertise as a producer and arranger, coupled with the personal rapport he developed (despite being 14 years older than the eldest Beatle) made him indispensable in the studio
' recorded output, by the group members' own admission, owes much to Martin's input as producer, arranger and musician

But now Martin is retiring as a producer and he's celebrating by helming a new album, 'George Martin, In My Life.' 'I wasn't setting out to break any barriers here, or break any records, ' Martin says
I set out to do an album with some of my friends, and then widen it a bit and did it with my heroes as well.' The album includes Robin Williams singing 'Come Together.' 'I think he's such a terrific guy, ' says Martin
Comic actor Jim Carrey belts out a rendition of 'I Am the Walrus.' Video clip: George Martin gets a little help from his friends 'I needed someone to do a zany version, ' says Martin
He sings so good, so well.' Martin convinced Celine Dion to perform Paul McCartney's ballad 'Here, There and Everywhere, ' and Phil Collins was tagged to do the 'Golden Slumbers' medley from the Beatles album 'Abbey Road.' Some might think it's sacrilege to put new voices on some of the most revered music of the 20th century
'Fifth Beatle' passes on wisdom
[CNN]
LONDON (CNN) -- Former Beatles producer Sir George Martin is to pass on the management and creativity skills he gained while working with the Fab Four to those eager for success in the corporate world
Martin certainly took a risk in 1962 when he signed The Beatles, a little known band from Liverpool that had been rejected by other record labels in England
After being struck by the band's 'star quality', Martin gave them a recording deal with his Parlophone Records label
Martin: Good corporate environments allow their people to have ideas 'I fell in love with them because they had this charisma right from the word go'
Martin believes that artistic freedom is just as important in the business environment
Martin's music credentials include over 50 number one singles in the U.S

Wikipedia: The Beatles

work, the members and notable albums and songs.
Martin expressed an interest in hearing the band in the studio; he invited the quartet to London's for an audition on
Martin had not been particularly impressed by the band's demo recordings, but he instantly liked them as people when he met them
Fortunately for the band, Martin, whose background was in comedy and novelty records, appreciated the joke
Martin did have a problem with Pete Best, whom he criticised for not being able to keep time; he then privately suggested to Brian Epstein that the band use another drummer in the studio
Starr played on The Beatles' second EMI recording session on 4 September 1962 but Martin hired session drummer Andy White for their next session on 11 September 1962
Even George Martin said later that it was 'pretty awful'
The Beatles' first recording session, in June 1962, was unsatisfactory to Martin, but a second in September 1962 produced a UK hit, '', which charted
McCartney once asked Martin what a guitar would sound like if it was played underwater, and was serious about trying it
While The White Album and the original Get Back sessions emphasised a return to basic pop-rock song structures, took a step back in the direction of glossy production, with (at George Martin's suggestion) the moulding of songs and song fragments on Side Two into a unified whole
