The new iteration of MSN Explorer competes with America Online's Internet service, offering a basic Internet access tool that integrates Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser with its Hotmail Web-based email program, MSN Messenger and Windows Media Player
Complaints have so far focused on MSN Explorer's email features
If an MSN email account holder installs the latest version of this software, Preview 2, the program warns the consumer that he or she will have to switch to Hotmail
The forced switch only affects email accounts at MSN.com
Although the email address stays the same, critics of the forced switch say Hotmail does not offer the same level of service as MSN email
For example, the account holder can only have access to email while connected to the Internet, according to Woody Leonhard, who publishes a newsletter, Woody's Windows Watch and is outlining the problem in tomorrow's edition

The Redmond, Wash., company, which has nearly 120 million e-mail customers through its Hotmail and MSN Internet services, confirmed Friday it had wrongly placed a group of Internet protocol addresses from AOL Time Warner's RoadRunner broadband service and EarthLink on its 'blocklist' of known spammers whose mail should be barred from customer in-boxes
'Considering the different levels of (spam) protections on the MSN service, more spam mail is going to get blocked, ' she said
'But if a (spammer) is working with an EarthLink address, for example, that inevitably could cause them to be blocked.' MSN and Hotmail use spam-filtering software and services from San Francisco-based Brightmail, whose techniques focus on the message's content when filtering spam
RoadRunner spokesman Keith Cocozza said that the ISP started receiving complaints last Friday that some of its 2.6 million customers nationwide could not send e-mail to MSN subscribers

Configuring Mail Clients to Send Plain ASCII Text What is wrong with sending HTML or MIME messages? There are now six main reasons for NOT doing this: Many E-mail and Usenet News reader programs, usually the mail and news reader programs that come with browser packages, allow users to include binary attachments (MIME or other encoding) or HTML (normally found on web pages) within their E-mail messages
This makes URLs into clickable links and it means that graphic images, formatting, and even color coded text can also be included in E-mail messages
While this makes your E-mail interesting and pretty to look at, it can cause problems for other people who receive your E-mail because they may use different E-mail programs, different computer systems, and different application programs whose files are often not fully compatible with each other
For this reason, many mailing lists especially those that provide a digest version, explicitly forbid the use of HTML formatted e-mail
Using HTML or MIME in E-mail messages makes the messages larger in size by a mimimum of two thirds to more than twenty times
These will take longer to download and they take up more storage space than standard plain text E-mail messages
