Blanus sp. - Cava Dell'Erba, Lower Pleistocene, Southern Italy

Italiano

DELFINO M., 1995b. Riassunti dell' VIII OGM SEH, Bonn, Germania, 23-27 agosto, 1995: 49. [in inglese]

DELFINO M., 1995b. Blanus (Reptilia, Amphisbaenia) from the Pleistocene of Southern Italy: another small tessera from a big mosaic. Abstracts book of the 8th OGM SEH, Bonn, Germany, August 23-27, 1995: 49.

The multidisciplinary attempts to understand the origin of the disjunct distribution of very close taxa, constitute one of the most interesting aspects of zoological research. Fort his kind of work, the genus Blanus represents a good material.
Remains belonging to Blanus have been recently recovered from the late Villafranchian site of Cava Dell'Erba (Apricena, Foggia, Southern Italy). The particular importance of this find is due to the geographic position of the site and to its age: it's the last fossil presence of the genus outside the present range.
Though the total fossil record is too scarce to provide definitive indications, this find allows us to express some biogeographical considerations.
