vinta dagli americani e non dai giapponesi.
Agili, potenti ,
veloci, quasi indistruttibili, potevano considerarsi la migliore macchina da
distruzione navale creata durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Nella controparte
giapponese solo la Taiho poteva tenergli testa.
Peccato che di
Taiho ne fu costruita solo una mentre di Essex una trentina!
Furono oltretutto
le precursori delle portaerei moderne con ponte angolato (vedi Antienam) e ben
si comportarono anche durante la guerra di Corea.
