STORIA

- HISTORY -

HISTORY

In the years 1942.43, when more intense it was I strive it war, the Royal Navy had programmed the construction of 31 new aircraft carriers and light aircraft carrier without counting those of escort that you/they had to be furnish from the United States.

In this program it was inclusive a class of 6 light aircraft carriers, the class Majestic. The ships that constituted it, plan in 1943 and launch in 1944-45, they were not still however you complete at the end of the conflict and their construction it was suspended in May of 1946 waiting for decisions.

The first unity that found a setup was the Great ones. ficent that was given to Canada and completed in April of 1948.

It followed the Terrible, assigned wings' Australia with the name in Sydney and completed in February 1949.

Then, in 1955 it was the time of the Majestic, gives to Australia with the name of Melbourne, and in the 1957 and 1961 of the Powerful and the Hercules, respectively gives to Canada with the name of Bonaventure and to India with the name of Vikrant.

Only the leviathan didn't find a suitable setup and it was demolished in 1968, twenty-three years after the launching; the apparatus motor was recovered however. the class Hercules, therefore, is symbolically suitable only as class of aircraft carrier English, in how much then they ended up lending service in other Marina.

How external line, these unities were very similar to those of the class Colossus, of which you/they had around the same displacement and the same dimensions: also on these unities the bridge of flight in the zone prodiera tightened him following the course of the hull; besides in the zone to proravia of the plancettes of the gunner the external planking, rather than to follow the inferior on its way surface, was cut entirely with a strip of vertical plate with a conformation characteristic of the whole zone prodiera, equal to that of the unities of the class Colossus.

The elevators were two, both on the axle of the ship, one to proravia and one to poppavia of the island.

To bow, on the left Hiatus, there was a hydraulic catapult. L 'island was similar to that of the Colossus, with incorporated chimney and provided of a tree to tripod; to poppavia of the island there was a crane to pylon. The number of the transported airplanes was inferior to that of the preceding class: 35 instead of 48; it is had however to observe that also the unities of the class Colossus in the 1954-55 almanacs is given for 35 airplanes and not for 48 as foreseen to the construction.

L 'armament (always that expectation to the origin) it had to be constitutes from 28 gunner from 40 mms, of which 12 in six fittingses binati (4 on external plancette to the bridge of flight, around to the sides of the elevators; one to proravia and one to poppavia of the island).

Also the 16 gunner single they had to have systematized on side plancette. Corazzatura was not anticipated.

L 'apparatus motor had to be equal to that of the Colossus, with two boilers and a group of whirlwind in each of the two local cars. As it is already said, among the classes Colossus and Hercules there were not substantial differences, so that, despite the due economic narrowness to the war, they could be built without serious problems.

The motor apparatuses were in fact equal and the armament was constituted alone gunner Bofors from 40 mms; equal also the elevators and the catapults and so many other constructive details and of preparation.

However, since the planning it dealt with two separate classes of unity, of which some of the first class were completed during the conflict, while those of the second were completed later around ten years and for harbors that were not that English.
