STORIA (HISTORY)

HISTORY

The light aircraft carrier Ryuho (dragon phoenix) it was in origin a tender submergible named Taigei, converted in aircraft carrier in the years 1941 - 42, to the beginnings of the war.

Its construction had been cleared in the additional budget of the year 1933: according to the project it had to be a ship center of command for a flotilla of submersibles, gifted besides of recognition airplanes.

Chitose and Chiyoda were projected and you build as tenders hydroplanes and they were the first unities of the Japanese imperial Marina to be built as such and not you transform as those that the precedetteros in the time, what the Wakamiya, ex load ship and Notoro Tsurumi and Kamoi, ex tanker.

It puts on in relief that in the Almanac naval English "] ane's Fighting Ships» of the year 1939, these two unities are suitable with the names of Titose and Tiyoda. The two ships were built in base to the appropriations of the Second Law for the Completion of the Fleet of the exercise 1931-32, you/they were respectively planned in the years 1934 and 1935 and both you complete in 1938.

They had a displacement of 12.550 height tons load and you/they could transport 24 hydroplanes. L 'hangar was under of the bridge of cover, the airplanes were lifted through on the bridge crane and you/they could be launched by four catapults brandeggiabili, prepared two for side along the bulwarks, in the central zone of the cover, on which a net of ferroguide was installed to sort them.

In January and in July 1941 respectively, Chitose and Chiyoda were modified for being able to transport submergible of small dimensions for operations of sabotage and insidious attack.

The deposit for the submersibles was drawn in the part poppiera of the hangar, that was provided of two great hatches at to extreme stern - transverse which the submersibles could have put in sea and recovered.

In the part prodiera the hangar had been unchanged, with an ability of solos 12 hydroplanes; also the setup of the crane and the catapults for their throwing was unchanged.

The Chiyoda expounded the activity of portasommergibili in war for about one year, from the end of 1941 at the end of 1942. After the battle of the Midway of June 1942, in which the aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu had been sunk, and after the loss of the Shoho in the battle of the Sea of the Corals of May 1942, the Japanese fleet had remained with the two Zuikakus, the two Hiyos, the Ryujo and the Zuiho; it was therefore necessary to urgently have other aircraft carriers transforming unity already built for earning time.

These unities were the two Chitoses and Chiyoda, the Kaiyo and the Shinyo.

The jobs of transformation began in the of - dicember 1942 for the Chiyoda and in January 1943 for the Chitose respectively finishing in October 1943 and in January 1944.

The two unities had the bridge of flight of the dimensions of a 180.00 x 23.00 without island and with two leaning chimneys on the right side, type special as it will be said treating of the apparatus motor.

The elevators were two rather brought closer in the central zone as on the Shoho; the structure of the bridge of flight being brought on a hull of precedent construction, you/he/she was sustained from pylons both in the part prodiera that in that poppiera, both prolungantisis notably over the central superstructure.

L 'principal armament, constituted by 8 guns by 127 anti-aircraft mms and antinave, you/he/she was prepared on four plancettes of which two to the sides of the elevator prodiero and two to the sides of that poppiero.

The 30 gunner from 25 mms they were in ten triple postings, of which two to the sides of the bridge of flight in the zone prodiera and six, three for Hiatus, in the central zone among the two chimneys and two in cover to extreme stern.

In July 1944 the armament was increased to 48 gunner by 25 mms.

The apparatus motor of these ships had remained that original and it had the particularity to be mixed: to vapor and diesel.

There were in fact two groups of whirlwind for the external helixes and two diesel for those inside.

L 'apparatus vapor motor was systematized to proravia of that diesel and the boilers they unloaded the gases of the combu-stione through the greatest chimney that stuck out out hull to center ship.

The two diesel motors unloaded a great deal instead through a second smaller chimney, situated also it on the right side, around to side of the elevator poppiero.

Both the chimneys were tilted toward the outside and downward as in the other Japanese aircraft carriers.

The Chiyoda took part to the battle of the Mariannes of June 1944, framed with the Chitose in the 3 & Division aircraft carriers to admiral Obayashi's command.

In the battle of Leyte, attached by airplanes of the American aircraft carriers Lexington, Franklin and Langley it was tied-up and in - cendiata the morning of October 25 th 1944 and in the afternoon sunk with guns by the cruisers Wichita, New Orleans. Holy Fe and Mobile. detached by the Task Force 38 of the admiral Halsey.
