LA BATTAGLIA

THE BATTLE

THE BATTLE

A strength of 7000-8000 men to the command of the king Leonida of Sparta was at - made a will to the footstep of the Termopilis, a line of coast along the gulf Maliano.

Trecentotrentatre ships garrisoned the arm of sea through which you/they would have had to transit those shutters, if they wanted to keep on supplying the army.

The Greek hoped in a decisive naval battle, while the army represented only an excuse to force the hostile fleet to enter those narrow waters.

For them fortune, the adversaries incapparono in a storm, losing 400 war unities; Temistocle, that commanded the Athenian ships, advised to immediately attach taking advantage of the disaster.

Two battles were fought, but both ended in parity; the Greek, nevertheless, withdrew when it came the news that their strengths to the Termopilis had been betrayed and overpowered after king Leonida's heroic resistance with its 300 watches of the body.

While the army persiano advanced, the inhabitants of Athens decided to abandon the city leaving only a contingent to defense of the acropolis,: their hopes were secret in the wood bulwarks of the Greek ships.

Temistocle drove the fleet in the waters it contained among the coast under Athens and the island of Salamina.

If the Persianis had revolved Salamina on both the sides, the Greek you/they would be found bottled, nevertheless the Athenian commander chose that dangerous position to induce the adversaries to attach, instead of revolving them to directly go himself/herself/themselves toward the Spartanis attested to defense of the isthmus of Corinto.

In the meantime, the army of Serse the defenders and gave the city to the flames.

While the fleet shutter drew near, dissents rose among the heads of that Greek fret.

The commander in head was the spartano Euribiade, even if the naval contingent of Sparta was small: this city drove the whole defense Greek fret, therefore also to the command of the fleet it had to be you a spartano.

Many captains didn't want to put on in the dangerous position suggested by Temistocle, that however he had won her when it threatened with withdrawing the Athenian ships (what they constituted the big one some whole naval strength), leaving her other laurel destiny.

Then, the morning of September 22 nd 480, he risked even more: it secretly sent a message to Serse, offering him his/her own betrayal in the mean of the battle, if the fleet shutter had attached.

It didn't have any intention to do it, but this forced the hand to Serse, as he forced the other ones you head to fight when the hostile ships rowed verse of them the morning of September 23.

Serse sent a contingent of 200 Egyptian ships to revolve the Western coast of Salamina to prevent a retreat Greek fret, while the rest of the fleet penetrated in the narrow east waters, directly entering the trap of Temistocle.

The 1000 ships were forced to divide himself/herself/themselves to double the island of Psittaleia and to push himself/herself/themselves in the channel of Salamina, therefore they had to turn around a long peninsula to enter the arm of real sea, that was too much narrow to allow the manoeuvre a so great number of boats.

The fleet shutter made trust on the speed and the maneuverability, but to this point you/he/she had lost both the one and the other.

The 370 Greek, greater and heavy helmets, didn't have to do anything else other than to row in ahead among you disorientate her unity avversarie, bumping her and speronandole in their advance.

For 7 -8 hours the noise of the wood done asunder and it howls her of battle and of death they reached the ears of Serse, sat on a throne, intent to assist to what held to be his/her coup de naval main.

Instead he saw more than halves his destroyed fleet, while the Greek lost only forty ships.
