Contrariamente a quanto si sperava a Corte infatti, Inglesi e Olandesi avevano operato il congiungimento ancora prima che Tourville mettesse alla vela. Russell aveva 63 navi. L'ammiraglio olandese van Almonde ne ha portate il 9 maggio altre 36. In totale, 99 vascelli contro 44, 38 fregate e brulotti contro 13, 6.756 pezzi d'artiglieria contro 3.240, 53.463 uomini contro 20.900.
Il 27 maggio il vento ha finalmente girato a libeccio e la squadra francese può inoltrarsi verso levante, dando fondo alle ancore durante il riflusso per evitare di farsi riportare al largo. Ha in avanscoperta sulla dritta il Perle del cavaliere de Forbin, e sulla sinistra I'Henry di la Roche-Allard. Russell ha salpato anche lui fin dal salto del vento. Ha in ricognizione verso la costa francese le corvette Chester e Charles Galley.
L'incontro avverrà al centro della Manica, in vista del Cotentin.
Il 29 maggio, sul far del giorno, gli esploratori delle due parti hanno rispettivamente ripiegato sul Britannia di Russell e sul Sole il Royal di Tourville, comunicando con bandiere, pannelli e colpi in bianco, la posizione e il numero degli avversari appena scoperti.
Il rapporto di la Roche-Allard dà da riflettere: è una vera foresta di alberate e di vele bianche che si è improv- visamente rivelata a sette leghe (21 miglia) a nord-est di Barfleur, « tutta splendente dei fuochi del mattino ».
Se Tourville aveva potuto alimentare la speranza di trovare gli Inglesi prima che avessero effettuato la congiunzione con la flotta olandese, ormai non ha più dubbi. La flotta alleata è là, al gran completo, affaccendata ad assumere lo schieramento di battaglia traversato al vento, su una linea appros- simativamente nord-sud. La squadra bianca d'avanguardia è costituita dai 36 vascelli olandesi di van Almonde.
Al centro la squadra rossa, condotta dallo stesso Russell con Ralph Delawal come vice ammiraglio e Cloudesly Shovell come contrammiraglio, comprende 31 vascelli su tre divisioni. Alla retroguardia, l'ammiraglio « azzurro » Ashby ne ha ai suoi ordini 32, con Rooke come vice e Carter come contrammiraglio. Un vero nido di vespe! Come han potuto, cosi deliberatamente, 1anciare Tourville in quest'avven. tura! P. inverosimile che a Versailles e aLa Hougue non abbiano saputo niente di questo concentramento nemico effettuato già da quasi tre settimane.
More solito, si è atteso l'ultimo momento per pensare a spedire una diecina di barche lunghe e di corvette alla ricerca di Tourville nella Manica, per dirgli di virare di bordo e attendere rinforzi. Una sola troverà il SoleiJ Royal... Ma troppo tardi, quando già la parola è al cannone.
Era scritto! E forse tanto meglio dopotutto, perchè questa è la grande ora di Tourville: la più bella, la più commovente di tutte le battaglie ingaggiate dalla Marina francese fino ad oggi e, come ha scritto in America il celebre Mahan che cito qui dopo tanti altri, « la più grande dimostrazione di spirito militare e di valore che sia mai stata offerta da una Marina ».
