SULLA ORIGINE DEL COGNOME

La ricerca dell'origine di un cognome e una delle cose più difficili.

I cognomi possono derivare da diversi fattori. Cominciano a definirsi, almeno da noi, nel Cinquecento da mestieri (Fabbro, Calegher, Muner), da caratteri fisionomici (Moro, Ros, Basso), dal nome del capostipite (Tonin, Giacomin, Francescon), dalla provenienza (Furlan, Trevisan, Padovan) ecc.

In tale contesto si può andare solo per ipotesi, data la mancanza di documenti.

Da notare anche che i cognome possono cambiare nel corso dei secoli, sovrastati magari da soprannomi, da errori nella stesure di atti di nascita o di matrimonio, dal sopravvento del cognome di una giovane vedova, divenuta suo malgrado capo famiglia.

Scartata l'ipotesi che nel caso specifico possa derivare da "sella", il cui uso sembra essere invalso solo negli ultimi secoli, si possono presumere due ipotesi valide, una dall'italiano ed una dal friulano.

Prima ipotesi: Sellan (o meglio Selan come risulta dai vecchi documenti) può aver origine da "Sele" o "Sile". Sono questi due termini antichi per indicare dei corsi d'acque che oggigiorno chiamiamo: "Fiumi" Oltre lo stesso nostro fiume Fiume che veniva chiamato Sile, il Sile che nasce presso l'omonimo abitato (S. Giovanni di Casarsa) e che attraversa Bannia, Azzano, Fagnigola, l'altro Sile che attraversa Treviso, Eraclea, Altino e che da il nome al paese di Silea, il Silla affluente del Fersina e quindi dell'Adige (Trento), nonché del Sele, che sbocca nel golfo di Salerno.

Una persona o un nucleo abitato o familiare che avesse una qualsiasi relazione (abitazione, lavoro, provenienza) con questi corsi d'acqua potevano benissimo essere identificati come "Silan" o "Selan". Si ricordi che la modificazione di una vocale (soprattutto per ragioni eufoniche) era una usanza molto frequente.

Seconda ipotesi: Prendiamo in considerazione tre termini friulani e cioè:

"Siele": indicava un sedile rustico ad una sola gamba ( zona Carnia) da usare nella stalla (a Claut "Sela");

"Sele": secchia a doghe di legno con manico di ferro a semicerchio, per attingere e conservare l'acqua, che nella forma classica ha il fondo un po' più largo della bocca, di modeste dimensioni per distinguerlo dal "seglot" ("podin");

"Selear": Paglia di segale battuta e pettinata per coprire il tetto dei "casoni".

Nei tre casi potrebbe aver avuto origine il cognome di una famiglia in cui uno o più membri si dedicavano nella costruzione di attrezzi specifici o nel preparare prodotti finiti ("Selar" o Sellan").

Speriamo ora che l'elaborazione delle ipotesi non venga ritenuta inconsistente.

Se altre ipotesi vengono alla luce, sarà nostra premura valutarli e studiarli.

A person or an inhabited or family nucleus that an any relationship (residence, job, origin) with these courses of water could very well have identified like "Silan" or "Selan." Remember that the modification of a vowel (above all for euphonic reasons) it was a very frequent custom.

Second hypothesis: We take three terms in the language friulana in consideration and that is:

"Sele": bucket to staves of wood with handle of iron to semicircle, for draw and preserve the water, that in the classical form has the bottom a little bit wider than the mouth, of modest dimensions for distinguish it from the "seglot" ( "[podin]");

"Selear": Straw of beaten rye and combed for cover the roof of the "casoni."(big house)

In the three cases could have had origin the last name of a family in which one or more members devoted themselves in the construction of specific utensils or in the prepare finished products ( "Selar" or Sellan").

We hope now that the elaboration of the hypotheses doesn't come retention inconsistent.

Village of 45.36 km2 with 7470 inhabitants, production of cereals, forages, vegetables and fruit; pig breeding and birds brending, industries of the materials from construction, alimentary, chemistries, of the packings and of the ceramics.

Comune della in provincia di Pordenone, (33,47 km²con 4007 abitanti), esteso nella bassa pianura friulana alla sinistra del fiume Sile. Sede comunale è Villotta, 21 Km. a SE del capoluogo, 33 m. alla sinistra del torrente. Produzione di cereali e frutta; allevamento del bestiame; fabbricazione di seggiole. La chiesa parrocchiale risale al secolo XIV, ma è stata rimaneggiata nel 1665.
