Un fantastico concerto di una band meravigliosa!!! Era la prima volta che li vedevo dal vivo sebbene ascolto i Jethro dalla fine degli anni '70. Quella del Neapolis Rock Festival è la prima data del tour italiano, e non potevo perdermi lo spettacolo, dato che vivo a circa 20 km dal luogo del concerto. Nell'ambito del Neapolis Rock festival si erano già esibiti nei giorni precedenti gli Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz , ecc. Stasera, invece, è la volta di alcune celebri progressive bands italiane: Osanna e PFM, anche se la maggior parte del pubblico è lì per vedere i Jethro Tull. L'ubicazione del concerto è abbastanza insolita (all'interno dell'area dismezza della vecchia Italsider) ed il palco è piazzato difronte al mare (Ian ed i membri della band si sono goduti anche un bel panorama dal palco). Dopo una lunga attesa i Jethro vengono annunciati alle 23.32, e subito la musica inizia...

…a fantastic concert from a wonderful band!!! For my very first time I have seen them live in concert, though I've been hearing "Jethro Tull" records since the late '70s. It was the first date of the italian tour, and I could not miss the show as I live just 20 Km far from Bagnoli. The concert was part of the "Neapolis Rock Festival", a 5 days of Rock music (Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz, etc.). That night there were some old progressive/rock italian band as supporters, such as "Osanna" and "PFM", but the most part of the crowd were there only for Tull.

The concert area were very unusual (inside the area of the old 'Italsider', the dismissed iron and steel industry of Naples), and the stage was just in front of the sea (so, Ian and the band enjoyed also a beautiful sight from the stage).

The band was introduced at 11.32 pm and soon the music started…

Aqualung/Living In The Past/Dogs In The Midwinter (inst.)/Cheerio (Finale)

1. Steel monkey molto energica, anche se la voce di Ian non sembra essere in perfetta forma, ma, per tutto il concerto il suono sarà perfetto.

2. For a thousand mothers si sente un altro flauto campionato in sottofondo, oltre a quello suonato dal vivo da Ian, in tipico stile "Tull".

3. Serenade to a Cuckoo ...semplicemente meravigliosa.
4. Nothing is easy
5. Rare & Precious Chain

6. A new day yesterday arrangiamento cadenzato ma molto accattivante, con un solo di flauto nell'intermezzo.
7. Untitled 1986 Instrumental un brano strumentale di Martin
8. Spiral Ian presenta questo pezzo dicendo: "Sparrow on the schoolyard wall"
9. Fat man (versione unplugged) Ian presenta questo pezzo: "Non voglio essere un politico grasso e scorretto... ah ah!" E' buffo vedere Martin al flauto, Andy alla fisarmonica, Doane ai timbales al centro del palco, ed Ian al mandolino che dice: "Questo è il mio mandolino. Mi piace suonarlo perché è dannatamente facile da suonare..."

11. Hunting girl molto vicina alla versione originale in studio
12. Bourée Andy inizia a suonare una versione classica del pezzo di Bach, quando ci accorgiamo che una meravigliosa emozione sta per iniziare… il gruppo rende al meglio per un ottima esecuzione.
13. This is not love veramente questo pezzo non mi piace tanto.
14. Flying Dutchman (intro)/My God bello veder Ian suonare la parte acustica con la sua piccola chitarra. La parte centrale dell'assolo di flauto è leggermente diversa dalla versione di studio.
15. Instrumental Un brano senza la voce di Ian
16. Budapest Il pezzo più lungo del concerto. Mi piace tanto fin dal 1988.
17. Locomotive Breath L'introduzione di piano è suonata perfettamente e, appena prima che Martin partisse col suo famoso riff, Andy si ferma perché una cameriera appare sul palco servendogli un bicchiere di spumante e lui si alza a bere alla nostra salute. Momento molto divertente salutato dai nostri applausi! Andy per tutto il concerto non ha mai smesso di muovere le gambe con movimenti buffi insieme a Johnatan.

18. Aqualung/Living in the past/Dogs in the midwinter/Cheerio
Aqualung inizia con un assolo di Martin, and e senza la parte originale del brano. Poi improvvisamente Ian appare correndo dal retro del palco. I tipici palloni finali catturano l'attenzione delle circa 3000 persone nel pubblico.

110 minutes di concerto, durante i quali è stato divertente ascoltare anche le buffe presentazioni dei pezzi di Ian. Piccolo rammarico per non aver ascoltato "Thick as a brick". Mentre stiamo andando via vedo i 5 tull passare davanti a noi in una nuova FIAT Multipla, e sotto i nostri saluti.

Prima del concerto ho incontrato due fans giapponesi con le T-shirt dei Genesis. Erano in vacanza in Italia per seguire tutta la tournée dei Jethro Tull!

E finalmente ho conosciuto di persona un grande fan di Roma, Aldo, con cui avevo già avuto dei contatti telefonici.

1. Steel monkey …very good, even if Ian voice doesn't seem to be in perfect form, and then the voice amplifier is making worse the rest. Apart from the voice, the sound is perfect.

2. For a thousand mothers some recorded flutes in background, apart from the "live" Ian's flute. Anyway… a typical Tull sound.
3. Serenade to a Cuckoo …simply wonderful.

6. A new day yesterday in a very slow arrangement, but very original. (including flute solo)
7. Untitled 1986 Instrumental Martin performs a guitar solo
8. Spiral Ian introduced this song saying... "Sparrow on the schoolyard wall"
9. Fat man (with all acoustic instruments) Ian introduced this song as "I don't want to be a political and incorrect fat man... ah ah!" and Andy was on the accordion. Ian also said "This is my mandolin. I like to play it, because it's fuckly easy to play..." It was very funny to see Martin playing the flute… and Doane was on the timbales in the center of the stage.

12. Bourée Andy started playing a simphonic version of the Bach piece, and we all realized that a wonderful moment of the concert was starting… The band was at its best, and the final result was great.
13. This is not love I really don't like so much this song.
14. Flying Dutchman(intro)/My God great to see Ian with his small guitar playing the acoustic part. The central part of the flute 'solo' was slightly different from the studio version.
15. Instrumental A piece without Ian's vocal
16. Budapest The longest song of that night. I liked it since 1988.
17. Locomotive Breath The piano intro was perfectly played and, just before Martin would had started his guitar riff, Andy stopped playing because a waitress appeared on the stage giving him a glass of white sparkling wine and he stood drinking our's health. Very funny moment, with our great applause! I have to say that Andy had moved his legs for all the concert, with funny moving, together with Johnatan.

18. Aqualung/Living in the past/Dogs in the midwinter/Cheerio
Aqualung started with a Martin 'solo', and without the original first part of the song. Then suddenly Ian appeared running from behind the stage. The final Balloon captured the attention of the whole crowd (I think there were about 3000 persons, but I don't know exactly).

Total timing: 110 minutes.
Hearing Ian's odd introductions of the songs has been very cool. But why don't they play "Thick as a brick"?

While I was going away, I saw the 5 Tulls inside a new 'FIAT Multipla' just passing in front of me and I could only cheer them with my hands.

I met two Tull fans from Japan, with Genesis T-shirts; they were in Italy on holiday but they were there for Jethro Tull Italian tour! And then I met a geat Tull fan from Rome, to whom I only had talked on the phone two years ago.
