linmodems.org
The "official" winmodem in Linux site. Acts as a mother site of all linmodem projects.
The FIRST step towards finding a Linux driver is identifying the modem's CHIPSET
Controller based modems utilize the 'standard' serial drivers, while the winmodems in most newer PCs and laptops require their own drivers
(Be sure to check the first.)' Much more information or driver kits for particular chipsets can be obtained at: Manufacturer names of Lucent or Xircom may be displayed by the query 'lspci -vv'
Linuxant offers the latest and greatest general purpose Conexant drivers for Linux
winmodems, drivers were NOT available as of May, 2001
(DSP) (HSP) US Robotics isn't offering drivers, but some speculate that they are based on (OEM versions of) Rockwell/Conexant hsfi drivers
There's a Linuxworld story about a PCTel linmodem driver
The driver has been released, but PCTel does not distribute it
There are driver compiler kits for Lucent chipset modems, serving more recent 2.2.nn & 2.4.nn kernels, largely replacing a binary only driver compiled under 2.2.12 sources There are updates for the 2.2 and 2.4 kernels
: , Kernel 2.2.17-14cl , Kernel 2.2.17-21mdk , Kernel 2.4.3-20mdk , Kernel 2.2.14-5.0 IBM has written a modem driver for IBM ThinkPad™ 600, 600E, and 770 models which contain the Mwave chipset under the GPL licence
Linuxant - Linux drivers for Conexant chipsets - Introduction
Contains Linux drivers for Conexant softmodem and controllerless chipsets.
Our goal is to make complete, high-quality drivers for Conexant chipsets available to the Linux community
The latter is provided in source form, allowing users to install the drivers under any supported version of the Linux kernel
Is my device supported? Which driver(s) do I need? Our generic Linux drivers for most Conexant HCF and HSF chipsets support as many configurations and features as possible
However due to the large number of modem and computer system manufacturers using Conexant chipsets in custom products, there are no guarantees that generic drivers will provide the same functionality as the original driver software or even work with your modem (please see the )
Because the scope of this project has grown beyond the capacity of a single volunteer and legal issues prevent us from using a classic open-source development model, the modem drivers are now available in two editions: a free version (limited to 14.4Kbps data), available at no cost
Proceeds will be used to further improve the drivers
If you are wondering why a Linux driver isn't already included in the price you paid for your modem, or disagree with the practice of selling Linux software, please

DOS programs to access Internet via SLIP or PPP using XT-class PCs: 8088, 8086, 80286.
If you don't have communications software, check a large DOS software site like .) You will need to give an init string for your modem when you set up the dialing script for your packet driver or its dialer
First, if you have a "plug and play" (sometimes called "plug and pray" :-) modem, you will need to configure its driver in AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS
In addition, the BIOS in an XT will not be able to detect a plug and play modem, so you need to specify the modem's I/O port and IRQ when you configure your packet driver and its dialer (or any other communications software), rather than just saying "COM1:" or "COM2:"
For example, if you have your mouse on COM1: and your modem on COM2: is plug and play, you will need to specify I/O port 2F8 and IRQ 3 instead of just giving a COM: port when you configure your dialer and packet driver
Again, you will have to explicitly specify the I/O port address and IRQ setting when you configure your dialer and packet driver (or any other communications software)
None of that is going to help you with DOS software like packet drivers that don't support Rockwell RPI

Details of factors that may limit dial-up connection speeds and connection to ISPs.
Data Communications FAQ (Windows Version)
FAQ for SLIP or PPP and wanting a high speed connection.
The software drivers are very buggy and RPI is a highly proprietary protocol
Next, you must understand which Windows communication driver (comm.drv) is installed on your system
the entry reads 'comm.drv = comm.drv') the standard Windows comm driver is installed
If you are running Windows 3.0 or 3.1 with the standard comm.drv driver, you may need to install a replacement (details below)
However, if you are running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 you should be aware that Microsoft improved the driver and it should not be necessary to replace it
However, it is quite possible that the standard Windows driver was replaced when you installed a communications software package
You might find that yours is set to one of the following: comm.drv = turbocom.drv comm.drv = cybercom.drv comm.drv = wfxcomm.drv Most of these drivers are capable of sustaining V.34, 28, 800 bps modem speeds (115, 200 DTE speeds)
In summary, if you are running Windows 3.0 or 3.1, you will probably need an enhanced comm.drv driver
The optimum values will depend upon which comm.drv you have installed together with other factors (some settings are specific to certain drivers and others will be interpreted differently by different drivers)

Linux on the Sony VAIO Z505HE/HS/JE/JS
A guide on using Linux on the Sony VAIO Z505HE/HS/JE/JS.
There are also a few BIOS incompatibilities and driver bugs which must be worked around, as described in this document
This includes all of the hardware device drivers, routines for accessing files on disk, memory management, network handling, etc
As a result, the has recently been able to produce a linux sound driver for the YMF-744
As this driver does not come built into the standard linux kernel, however, it is necessary to download and compile the ALSA package separately
In order to use sound on the Z505H/J, you will need to download a reasonably recent version of the ALSA driver package from (version >= 0.5.9 is reccomended as of this writing)
If you are only planning on using the ALSA drivers this as a replacement for the standard linux (OSS) sound system, you do not need to download the ALSA library or utils packages
Version 0.5.9 and up compile without incident with the 2.4.0-test5 kernel, simply follow the instructions in the INSTALL file to compile the ALSA drivers
It is therefore suggested that one not follow the instructions in the INSTALL file when it comes to installing the drivers, but instead the following lines be added to /etc/conf.modules (or /etc/modules.conf , depending on what name yours goes by): alias sound snd-pcm-oss alias midi snd-seq-oss alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-ymfpci Note: In order to be able to play sounds properly using the YMFPCI drivers, you will need to in the BIOS configuration
