The qualifying for the Zandvoort Grand Prix was great! Driving in his country, Boy Hayje got the pole. Conny Andersson got the second position in the starting grid equalling Hayje's time (1'30.0"). Riccardo Patrese got the third place being only 0.2 seconds slower than Hayje and Andersson.

The race was run in two batteries. The first battery had 15 laps and the second battery, 20 laps. Hayje took the lead at the start of the first battery. Conny Andersson retired in the second lap with problems in his car. After Andersson's retirement Gianfranco Brancatelli, who had a good start, got the second position and went to fight with Hayje for the win but when he was fight with the Dutchman, their cars spun off retiring them from the battle. Patrese, who was third, got the lead and had no problems for win this first race. Marc Surer finished in second and Piercarlo Ghinzani finished in third.

The starting grid for the second race was formed based in the final positions of the first race. Riccardo Patrese got the pole for this battery and won the race easily becoming the leader of the European Formula 3 Championship.
