Pole Position
Riccardo Patrese (1'13.001")

Fastest Lap
Nigel Mansell

Autosprint magazine about this race

During the qualifying we had a great battle between Williams and Mc Laren for the pole position. Riccardo Patrese had problems with his car (blown engine) and driving a spare car he won the pole, it was a great surprise! Gerhard Berger got the second position, Ayrton Senna got the third place and Nigel Mansell, the fourth.

At the start Mansell passed Senna with a dangerous manouvre, Senna did a great effort to avoid an accident. Ayrton tried to pass Mansell again but he didn't pass him. Mansell cut Senna's attack with another dangerous manouvre that made Gerhard Berger make a manouvre for avoid a crash. Patrese was the first but at the 18th lap he let Mansell pass him.

The order was the same till the pit stops. When Mansell left the boxes a wheel of his car went out and he stopped in the pitlane. The mechanics went to where the car was and put a new wheel on the car. Mansell received a black flag because of it and retired when he was in the first fifth place.

Patrese was first, Senna and Berger were fighting for the second position. Berger passed Senna but few time later he retired with a blown engine.

Senna couldn't attack Patrese and so the Italian won. Senna finished in second and Jean Alesi brought Ferrari to the third place.

Riccardo's Comments

Race: "I did my best at the start and took the lead. Some time later I let Nigel pass me, it was expected by the team strategy. When I changed tyres I kept the lead and already knew that Nigel had problems but I didn't know what happened and I don't know yet, maybe you could tell me what happened... Because of it I stopped 1 lap later than the expected but after that I only had to control Ayrton. It was easy because the car was perfect.

It's curious, every time I have a problem I win the race: it happened in Mexico and here the problems started yesterday when my car had problems and after that, I got the pole with the t-car and continued today when I was furious with Ballestre in the starting grid. So the right way for I get wins is create problems and more problems for all be better in the end!"
