The Williams team wanted a good result in Mexico race. They started well with Riccardo Patrese winning the pole and Nigel Mansell in the second place. Ayrton Senna had a jet-ski accident in the week before the race, but he came to Mexico city for the race. He had an accident during the Friday qualifying but he stayed in the third place. Jean Alesi closed the second row. The third row was dominated by Gerhard Berger (Mc Laren) and Nelson Piquet (Benetton). The start of the race was aborted due a fire in the back of J. J Lehto's car. The problem was solved and Lehto even used the same car for the second start that also was aborted due problems with Olivier Grouillard. The third start was successful and Mansell took the lead. Jean Alesi also had a good start and took the second place. Senna was third and Patrese, fourth. Senna and Patrese passed Alesi and went to fight for the first place with Mansell. Patrese passed Senna and started to fight with the British driver. Mansell started to have an engine problem and few time later, Patrese passed him and took the lead but he stayed ahead of Senna and Piquet. Nigel started to be fast again in the end of the race and went to fight with Riccardo for the win, but Riccardo responded and won the race. It was the first win of Williams team in 1991. Mansell finished in the second place and Ayrton Senna was the third. Riccardo's Comments Race: "I didn't have a good start and was in the fourth position in the first curve. I did my best for save the car and principally the tyres don't forcing a lot in the first four or five laps, but after these laps I started to attack. I could win positions easily because the car was perfect and kept 100% during all the race, didn't bring any problem to me. Because of it I passed Nigel easily and could force the rythm for try to get an advantage that give me some stability. I did the right thing because Nigel forced a lot at the end of the race. Naturally
I am satisfied with this win, principally because of the team. We proved
today that we are really strong." |
