Formula One went to South Africa with the battle for the World Championship between Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet and Rene Arnoux. Prost was ahead, but the other two drivers also had great possibility to win the title.

Patrick Tambay won the pole position with Nelson Piquet closing the first row in the second place. Patrese got the third place and Arnoux, the fourth.

Piquet and Patrese blasted ahead at the start. Few time later Tambay also was passed by de Cesaris. Prost got the third place, but Lauda was very close to him and in the 18th lap he passed the french. Arnoux retired with engine problems. Now the Renault team was hoping that Piquet didn't finish the race for Prost win the championship. Piquet began to nurse his car and Patrese passed him. Lauda also passed the Brazilian, but he retired few laps later and Piquet returned to the second position. De Cesaris passed Piquet and got the second place but it wasn't problem for Piquet, the third place would give him the championship.

Riccardo Patrese won the race with de Cesaris in second and Nelson Piquet, the new World Champion, in third.
