My involvement -my love affair, as I use to call it- with electronic music began some years ago, when I listened for the first time to Air's Kelly Watch The Stars. It was like being catapulted into a brand-new world, totally different from the one I had come from. My love for music was born together with me; but music for me had always meant something built up on a classical structure, a song as we usually intend it. Air's magical, absolutely magical track made me realize that stanzas and choruses are not always needed to create a good musical track...A track which can fly - and make you fly...

Electronic Music - History

Non è affatto facile fissare una precisa data in cui nasce la musica elettronica. Già all’inizio del ‘900 ci furono grandi invenzioni, ingegnose ma poco pratiche, come ad esempio le ingombranti macchine intonarumori progettate e costruite dal Futurista Luigi Russolo, o come il Thelarmonium di Thaddeus Cahill, che altro non era che un organo elettrodinamico del peso di duecento tonnellate e dal suono quasi inesistente, non essendo ancora stati inventati gli amplificatori.

Pian piano però col passare degli anni venivano alla luce apparecchi più maneggevoli e versatili, che meglio si prestavano ad un utilizzo artistico a fini musicali e non meramente dimostrativo. E’ il caso del Theremin  brevettato nel 1924 dallo scienziato russo Lev Termen, strumento che era possibile suonare senza alcun diretto contatto fisico, muovendo le braccia nel campo elettrostatico di due antenne che producono un suono etereo e modulato. Il Theremin è stato anche utilizzato dai Beach Boys nel famoso brano “Good Vibrations” e in alcune esibizioni live.

Molto importante per la nascita della musica elettronica furono dopo il secondo conflitto mondiale il perfezionarsi degli strumenti di registrazione a nastro magnetico ed il diffondersi dei primi centri fonologici di ricerca presso le stazioni radio. Famosissimo è lo studio di radio Colonia fondato nel 1951, dove muove i primi passi fino ad assumerne la direzione Karlheinz Stockhausen, uno dei maggiori protagonisti della musica contemporanea  e grande sperimentatore elettronico, fondatore di una vera e propria scuola che vanta allievi come Can, Kraftwerk, Cluster e in Italia perfino Franco Battiato.

Agli inizi degli anni ’60 inizia la produzione dei sintetizzatori, strumenti monofonici a moduli elettronici, più semplici da usare ma soprattutto meno ingombranti delle macchine che fino ad allora erano state utilizzate per creare musica elettronica. Nel 1964 Robert Moog  progetta e mette in commercio un synth a cui da il suo nome: il Moog, che ottiene un enorme successo nella versione mini-Moog del ’71. Nel 1964 inizia ad essere prodotto il Mellotron, una sorta di antenato del campionatore che suona spezzoni di nastro registrato. Ben presto i sintetizzatori vengono dotati del sequencer,  un sistema che permette la memorizzazione dei suoni e li ripete in sequenza; tutte queste innovazioni pemettono all’elettronica di diffondersi come genere musicale se non ancora di massa, comunque non più di elite come era stato invece fino ad allora. Ha inizio così una storia lunghissima che nel giro di trent’anni  genera fenomeni  come la musica industriale, l’EBM, il technopop, la musica ambient, la  house e la techno, senza dimenticare la new age e il trip-hop.
