31/10/04 Surge protection for Cable modems (& ADSL too) Ignoring my usual no spam policy on this one occasion because I feel that this is really worth telling people about, and that is surge protection for Cable modems
And if you're out of contract, guess who foots the bill for a replacement Cable modem..
Ok, so I've got the and the for ADSL users who don't need the Cable modem protection
(Unlimited on the Cable modem model and $275, 000.00 on the other)
One for my Cable modem and one for the ADSL side, plus all the Routers and PCs nearby plugged into each, so I can verify that they don't adversely affect functionality or performance

Dozens of readers have now reported that their Motorola modems deliver significantly lower throughput when connected to Macs than when connected to PCs
My internet connection operated slower than my friend's PC with the same cable company and modem
'The cable person suggested it was a problem with my Mac, and how it communicated with the cable modem. I found that answer troubling, so I sent an email to you folks at the time, asking if your viewers had any similar problems. The original email and your response were discarded a long time ago
'I upgraded from the Motorola CyberSURFER Wave Modem to the SURFboard modem, model SB5101, when it became available about three years ago. The issue of the differential speeds between a Mac and a PC was still present, even with the newer faster modem design

MOTOROLA CABLE MODEM ?
Cheap Wireless iPAQ Article
A guide to connecting the iPAQ to a cellular phone for wireless Internet connectivity.
In addition to the serial autosync cable (forget about using USB - it won't work), you will need a null modem adapter (I didn't say dull, I said null), and a gender changer
This $26 cable should remove the need for the null modem adapter, the gender changer, and a rubber band to hold approximately 4 or so feet of extra cable
You will be using the cell phone as a wireless modem, so you need to make sure your phone has this feature
They offer various "kits" for several phones which include a phone specific serial cable, and a null modem adapter
I had configured my CF modem without much effort, but for some reason my phone kept displaying 111 instead of 777 (for Verizon, your system may differ)
I have not used instant messaging wirelessly, though I have tried it with the CF modem
Pros: Inexpensive true internet access Cons: Slooooooow - 14.4k, 1/4 the speed of CF card 56k modem Lots of cables - jump rope anyone? Can't use Stowaway keyboard or other "bottom connected" accessories at same time Discuss this article in the

Data Communications FAQ (Windows Version)
FAQ for SLIP or PPP and wanting a high speed connection.
Selecting a Modem You will of course need a modem
Modems can be segmented into two broad categories
Internal modems are printed circuit boards which are installed inside your computer
External modems are standalone boxes which require their own power supply
Internal modems connect directly to your PC bus whereas external modems connect via one of your PC COMM ports
When using an external modem, be sure to purchase a high quality cable to connect it to the comm port on your computer
Support for the following RS232 signals is recommended as a minimum: Transmit Data (Tx) Receive Data (Rx) Signal Ground Data Terminal Ready (DTR) Carrier Detect (CD) Request to Send (RTS) Clear to Send (CTS) Other important features to consider when selecting a modem include: Transmission speed Fax capabilities In order to communicate at speeds of up to 14, 400 bps, you'll need a modem which supports V.32bis
In order to communicate at speeds of up to 28, 800 bps, you'll need a modem which supports V.34
V.Fast and V.FC were interim and proprietary standards developed so that modem manufacturers could sell 28, 800 bps modems whilst the V.34 standard was being developed
