Wire Interview: Strategies for Making Sense
Interview with Brian Eno discussing art and philosophy of composition.

  • This isn't always true: there are some kinds of music which do have their lyrics as the centre, like Laurie Anderson, for instance

The Boston Review on The Errancy
    Bonnie Costello's review.

  • .' Such specialized critical language, inspired by the formidable Jacques Lacan, might seem to some an unpromising or backwards source for lyric

  • These themes are investigated through various lyric 'heroes'--lovers, philosophers, poets, an 'I' filling and emptying out, and their various 'guardian angels' (inspired by Rilke)--'of the little utopia, ' 'of point of view, ' 'of self-knowledge, ' and so on, counterparts of the personified principles that guide the epic hero of Renaissance allegory

  • Eliot, the century's great ventriloquist and master of the modern lyric-epic

  • Errancy is larger than any single lyric voice; it is humanity's story (or at least its heroic story) and Graham absorbs these voices from past and recent past as the latest progeny of the quest

  • The most flippant lyric poet might write a pretty poem about lambs; but it requires something bolder and graver than a poet, it requires an ecstatic prophet, to talk about the lion lying down with the lamb

    Musicfolio: Marc Almond
Discography with album reviews and ratings.

  • " Said Sukkarieh, musicfolio.com, 7/01 Recommended Marc Almond biography books : Marc Almond: The Last Star by Jeremy Reed, Paperback - Revised edition (Jun 99) The Last Star is the best-selling, in-depth aesthetic account of the life, loves, attitudes, lyrics and music of Marc Almond

  • In this new edition, author Jeremy Reed traces the evolution of Almond's music and lyrics from the legendary, through the various solo records and collaborations, to his emergence as perhaps the greatest male torch singer of his generation

  • No happy sing-alongs on this one, but music and lyrics which hit you in the stomach

  • The lyrics describe a dark plague striking and attacking life as we know it

  • The lyrics are sweetly accented by angelic female voices and sweeping harp glissandos

  • Almond's lyrics are pure poetry, capturing the games people play in the dark

  • Almond is surely the first western pop star to enlist the services of the choir of the Higher Naval Engineering Academy of St Petersburg, and probably the last." -- Dorian Lynskey, The Guardian, 12/03 _ Recommended Links: Song Lyrics Similar Artists: | Voltaire | Siouxsie and the Banshees | Jimmy Sommerville | Erasure Search: Keywords: | Synthpop/NewWave | Industrial/EBM | Quotes | Copyright © 1999-2006 - musicfolio.com - All Rights Reserved

Little Feat: The Rock and Roll Doctors
Rock Around the World article from July, 1977.

  • For all their commercial success, the Eagles recall nothing so much as a Schlitz beer commercial, the music a blend of the choicest ingredients honed to a polished technical precision, the lyrics a succession of exhortations to grab for all the gusto you can while living the fashionably desperate life in the fast lane

  • Their debut album revealed a tight quartet with a pair of songwriters in Payne and George firmly grounded in the country and blues traditions and a lyrical stance seemingly derived from a lifetime spent on the road between California and Texas

  • The sound is heavily textured, the music locked into the same loping mid-tempo backbeat and the lyrics primarily sagebrush sagas of a lonely dude trying to get laid down below the borderline

  • Flip the record over and you're confronted by a slice of vintage Chicago blues in 'Old Folks Boogie, ' with drumming that could have stepped off of a Howlin' old record and a lyrical hook ('You know that you're over the hill/When your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill.') That's almost worth the price of the album alone

    Waxin' Lyrical
Traslations of various Anime, Game, Jpop Japanese song lyrics into English.

  • Hollow as it may be, my 'suffering' causes me to be, well, lyrical, as I color in the details with bold splashes of melodrama

The Classical Free-Reed, Inc. CD Review of An Alice Symphony
Review by Gregory A. Vozar and comments by the accordion player on the recording.

  • To provide contrasting lyrics in one section, Del Tredici also incorporated verses from 'Speak Gently, ' the Victorian inspiration for Carroll's parody, 'Speak Roughly to Your Little Boy.' He used additional segments of recited text from Alice

  • In the opening movement, 'Speak Roughly / Speak Gently, ' these groups play in juxtaposition, alternating with the lyrics, one of which advocates abuse, the other urging mildness in dealing with children

  • The sets of lyrics are intermingled in such a fashion that the musicians and singer must leap back and forth between the two dissimilar styles

Adrian's Album Reviews : Syd Barrett
Reviews with track listings and narrative.

  • The sound of Syd audibly breaking up on record amid the sound of pages of lyrics being turned whilst he loses his place does nobody any favours at all, least of all Syd

  • 'Terrapin' is a lovely song with nice acoustic strumming and very interesting lyrics

  • The distortion, the lyrics, the vocals

  • 'Dark Globe' is Syd and guitar, the lyrics are again something striking and worthy, the vocal here reveals the strains and state of Syd's mind

  • Brooks Schwartz Steelmover@hotmail.com Syd Barrett has really influenced some of my song lyrics even though I'm a beginner songwriter. The first song I heard of his(octopus)really blew my mind.I have great respect for him dispite his LSD problem

  • The sound of Syd alone with his guitar forms a brilliantly distinctive introduction, a series of great lyrics arrive - the song is as catchy as any kind of disease you can imagine, and I apologise for using the word disease in this context

  • 2, Fall 1997 The impetus of my psychoanalytic exploration of male masochism in Donne and Crashaw occurs in Richard Rambuss's 'Pleasure and Devotion: The Body of Jesus and Seventeenth-Century Religious Lyric, ' in which he opens up possibilities for reading eroticism (especially homoeroticism) in early modern representations of Christ's body

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Felix de Lope de Vega Carpio
    Poet and dramatist, b. at Madrid, 1562; d. 23 Aug., 1635.

  • Furthermore, we have from him a mass of sonnets, romances (lyrics in the ballad metre), odes, elegies, verse epistles, and so on, of which some are religious in their inspiration and others profane

  • Of Lope's other compositions, besides his plays, there may be mentioned the 'Filomena' (1621), the 'Triunfos divinos' (religious lyrics), the 'Corona trágica' (1627 — an epic in five cantos celebrating Mary, Queen of Scots), the 'Laurel de Apolo' (1630 — a rhymed review and eulogy of about three hundred poets, like Cervantes's 'Viage del Parnaso', uncritical and partisan), and the 'Rimas de licenciado Tomé de Burguillos' (1634)

  • It is interesting, however, for the lyrics and autos (religious plays) contained in it, and also for the list of over two hundred of his plays which the author indicates as already composed
