Snorecore- an appreciation
Article on slow-core/sad music bands. Also features, Red House Painters, Low,
and Mazzy Star.
One thing most artists have in common is an appreciation of what Brian Eno has referred to in his excellent 1995 diary A Year with Swollen Appendices as 'starting on a musical landscape to develop a sense of emotional place.' (You can see here where the alternate term 'emocore' came from.) In other words, they accept (and incorporate into their compositions) the importance of space, the 'sounds of silence' if you will, as opposed to the Spectorish 'wall of sound.' The influence of 'krautrock' in this regard is neatly established
Another component I 'feel' is a sense of relaxation, again acknowledging Eno's 'sense of emotional place.' Many, though by no means all of the better Snorecore pieces are quite (and quietly) lengthy
The lyrical (in the sense of having words or lyrics) passages often describe the author's past or present dealings with a real event
In contrast to the bands which predominantly use synthesizers to elicit a sense of otherworldliness or detachment from the everyday pain and suffering in our lives, again showing the existential 'krautrock' influence
John Prine- a big, fat retrospective- Perfect Sound Forever
A look at the artist's career.
And, sure enough, there at the bottom of the liner notes: "Special thanks to Kris Kristofferson and Paul Anka." (Which is as odd a pairing as, say, Kinky Friedman and Teresa Brewer.) Prines follow-up album, Diamonds in the Rough , isnt quite the first-cut-to-last success that his debut album was, but it did add such songs to the Prine "Hall of Classics" as "Yes I Guess They Ought to Name a Drink After You, " "The Great Compromise, " "The Late John Garfield Blues, " and, my favorite, "Souvenirs": "Memories, they cant be boughten/They cant be won at carnivals for free/It took me years to get those souvenirs/And I dont know how they slipped away from me." As usual, Prine is aided and abetted by his close friend and peer, Steve Goodman, with him he shared a quirky, demented, and hilarious sense of humor
1975s Common Sense is a bit of a come down
And putting Prine in Sun Studios made no sense whatsoever
The Wire: Strategies for making sense
Interview with Brian Eno discussing art and philosophy of composition.
Strategies for making sense From The Wire , Issue 139, September 1995, conducted by Paul Schütze
You seem in a sense to be in a slightly similar position, as something like the Alvin Tofler of futurist aesthetics
Now, fine: that's wonderful, we're very pleased, in one sense; but the important thing, as anyone who's played synthesizers knows, is not the number of options that you have, but the rapport you can have with the instrument
So it's pure interaction, in a sense
Interactivity's a very interesting word, because it implies that this is something we didn't do in art before, which is complete nonsense, because the only interesting art experiences are the ones that engage you in that way; in which you are invited to become part of the authorship of something in some way or another
And more and more people are getting the sense that it's worth collecting your equipment on that basis: not to have all the options but a few that really work
Just like the I Ching doesn't have meaning in some abstract sense of having meaning invested in it; but your interaction with the thing generates meaning
Enjoying "La Belle Dame Sans Merci", by John Keats
An essay by Ed Friedlander, MD.
This pursued through volumes might take us no further than this, that with a great poet the sense of Beauty overcomes every other consideration, or rather obliterates all consideration
And so began the nonsense about Keats, the great poet of sensuality and beauty, being a sissy and a crybaby
His lyrics make sense, he tried hard to preserve his health, and he found beauty in the simplest things rather than in drugs (which were available in his era) or wild behavior
In his, Keats suggests that if you want to write sad poetry, don't try to dull your senses, but focus on intense experience (not even always pleasant -- peonies are nice, being b_tched out by your girlfriend isn't), and remember that all things are transient

HUNTER'S GD LYRICS
Complete listing of the lyrics of Robert Hunter's Grateful Dead songs.
SEP: Dante Alighieri
Life and work of 13th century Italian poet and philosopher; by Winthrop Wetherbee.
The development of Dante's almost messianic sense of the imperial role is hard to trace, but it was doubtless affected by his bitterness over what he saw as the autocratic and treacherous conduct of Pope Boniface, and a growing conviction that only a strong central authority could bring order to Italy
Like Guido Dante accepted love as being, for better or worse, fundamental to the noble life, and his early lyrics express a sense like Guido's of the internally divisive power of desire
For Guido, the 'heavenly' allure of the lady is a deception perpetrated by the senses, all the more dangerous as the lover's gentilezza responds more fully to the attraction of her beauty and subjects itself to the 'fierce accident' of passion

RATW: Little Feat Article
Rock Around the World article from July, 1977.
But beneath the glossy surface, one senses little, if any, feeling in Eagles music
So, in keeping perfectly in tune with Little Feat's peculiar sense of logic, 'Time Loves A Hero' is as stylistically scattered as its predecessor was unified
Adrian's Album Reviews : New Order

New Order starting point best buy average rating Power Corruption And Lies Technique 7.13 , Movement 7 ( 1981 ) Dreams Never End / Truth / Senses / Chosen Time / ICB / The Him / Doubts Even Here / Denial A big step releasing an entire album, following the breakup of Joy Division through the death of Ian Curtis
It made some logical sense to release the 'Ceremony / In A Lonely Place' single which had been the last two songs written with Ian
That release made for a sense of closure
'Senses' is an enjoyable track, largely instrumental and showcasing riffing guitars and echo filled rolling drums leaning towards dance / techno purely through production effects and Stephen Morris drum work
'Paradise' is New Order at it's bare essence, and 'Every little counts' shows their often overlooked sense of humour ..
They released some fine music, but never did have the best business sense or judgement

Anyway, history out of the way, how does 'Come On Pilgrim' fare these days? Well, we only get eight songs, so it makes sense to refer to this as a mini-album
'Monkey Gone To Heaven' is perhaps the best known Pixies song, and still sends chills down my spine with it's use of Cello and Violin, and seemingly touching lyrics that fail to make any sense
CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Canticle of Canticles
One of three books of Solomon, contained in the Hebrew, the Greek, and the
Christian Canon of the Scriptures.
For the first and immediate sense the typical interpretation holds firmly to the historical and secular meaning, which has always been regarded by the Church as heretical; this interpretation gives, however, to the 'Song of Love', a second and higher sense
In earlier times reference was often made to a first and literal meaning of the words of a text, which meaning, however, was not the real sense of the context as intended by the author, but was held to be only its external covering or 'husk'
Entirely dissimilar to this method is the typical exposition of modern times, which accepts an actual double meaning of the text, the two senses being connected and intended by the author
(In regard to a twofold sense of this kind of in the Scriptures, cf
381.) The soul that has been purified by grace is also in a more remote yet real sense a worthly bride of Lord
For this reason, it is important to ascertain more exactly than was done in earlier times the genuine and true sense of the text
e and true sense of the text
CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Felix de Lope de Vega Carpio
Poet and dramatist, b. at Madrid, 1562; d. 23 Aug., 1635.
In depth of thought he is all too often lacking; and with good sense he avoided philosophical themes, for he would I have failed in the treatment of them
Boston Review | Bonnie Costello reviews Jorie Graham
Bonnie Costello's review.
The earlier Eliot of 'Prufrock' can be heard in 'The Guardian Angel of Self-Knowledge.' Shedding each possibility with gusts of self-exposure, bubbling-up into gesture their quaint notions of perfection, then letting each thought, each resting-place, get swept away-- because that was not what I meant--was not at all-- and since the future isn't real, is just an alarmclock, where the last domino can finally drop, wearing a street-address around its medicated neck-- So much is Prufrockian here, not just in cadence but in image and theme--the self-consciousness, the mechanization, the paralyzing sense of time, the anguish of thinking
In a sense it is the fallible armor of the modern knight errant, a human vestment that can take on a priestly radiance at times
