VD is for Everybody
The American Social Health Association was always experimenting with new ways to educate the public about venereal disease. They helped produce the first VD education film, "Fit to Fight", in 1918 in order to educate soldiers being shipped abroad to fight in the first World War. Although this popular TV public service announcement informs the public that everybody is susceptible to venereal disease, strangely, it also seems to imply that having VD will make you successful, attractive and happy...
Grapevine, The
While trying to address the problems of gossip in the workplace, this film does an excellent job of offending everyone involved – the overreacting manager, the nosey secretary and the chattering female grapevine participants. Shown to audiences nowadays, you can see folks flinch every time a female employee is referred to as a “girl”.

Beginning Responsibility: Lunchroom Manners
The rude, clumsy puppet Mr. Bungle shows kids how to behave in the school cafeteria - the assumption being that kids actually want to behave during lunch. This film has a cult following since it appeared on a Pee Wee Herman HBO special.
Squeak the Squirrel
Shows how a gold-mantled ground squirrel at Crater Lake National Park has learned to solve problems connected with getting food. Illustrates how an animal can learn to find food that is hidden from view or out of reach. This is one of the AV Geeks favorite films, mostly because Squeak is somewhat of a working class hero who, inspite of what obstacles "the Man" puts in his way, always perseveres.
Joy Ride - an Auto Theft
This cautionary tale was aimed towards young, thrill-seeking teens. The exciting car chase at the end of the film may have glamorized joy-riding to students more than actually demonize it. If nothing else, the film reveals the primary perpetrator of auto thefts - bored, horny boys.
Good Health Practices, Part I
The makers of “Soapy the Germ Fighter” are back to teach other things to keep us healthy. Young Jim and Judy learn about proper eating, keeping clean, proper rest and good toilet habits. The enthusiastic narrator reminds us not to be “bashful or silly about bathroom habits” and that we should “go” whenever we feel like it.
Your Junior High Days
This film prepares elementary school kids for the harsh lessons of junior high: You will no longer be the smartest or best athlete. Your carefree days of the teacher holding your hand are over. And finally, you are responsible for remembering your own gym locker combination.

Know For Sure - Darryl F. Zanuck
A Hollywood-produced melodramatic short that deals with prophylaxis, diagnosis and clinical treatment of syphilis. Discusses follow-up treatment, sources of infection and community control. Unfortunately, this is edited version which is missing the graphic syphilis sores on male genetalia and the demonstrations on how to use condoms. (I say "unfortunately" because those scenes give the film a different tone than the milder version you'll see here...
Answering the Child's Why
A cautionary film for parents and teachers that dramatizes actual situations in which youngsters meet both positive and negative attitudes toward their questions. Suggests effects on their personalities of each type of attitude.
Mystery of Time
On the surface, this film may seem like an average science film about time and space, but like most of films from the Moody Institute of Science, there is an ulterior motive. The film’s host Irwin Moon had an interest in science as a child and later incorporated that interest into his life as a pastor. He would tour the country giving his “Sermons of Science” where the marvels of science provide the visible evidence of a Divine plan of creation...
Electric Eel
Irwin Moon shows us the electric eel and demonstrates its amazing abilities to shock fish for food and to use "radar" to find the fish.)
Carnivorous Plants
On the surface, this film may seem like an average biology film, but like most of films from the Moody Institute of Science, there is an ulterior motive. The filmÂ’s host Irwin Moon had an interest in science as a child and later incorporated that interest into his life as a pastor. He would tour the country giving his “Sermons of Science” where the marvels of science provide the visible evidence of a Divine plan of creation...
200
This trippy tribute to our country's 200th birthday was funded by a Bicentennial Project Grant and animated by Vincent Collins who made other psychedelic cartoons. This film was produced by the United States Information Agency -the government's propaganda agency.
Drugs Are Like That
Anita Bryant (famous Florida orange juice and anti-gay spokeswoman) narrates this film that tries to simplify its drug abuse message with an analogy of kids putting together a contraption out of Lego blocks. Although the metaphors often don't make sense, the visual impact of the film is stunning and could easily be quite popular with individuals consuming illicit drugs. Also, like most anti-drug films, this could be a tempting introduction to drugs for some youths yearning to escape their "borin...
Santa Claus' Punch and Judy
Santa magically creates a Punch and Judy puppet show to the delight of children at a Christmas party. WARNING! Parents may wish to watch this before exposing innocent eyes to the comic brutality of a Punch and Judy puppet show from the late 1940s - including some very non-PC scenes. Punch & Judy professor/historian Geoff Felix describes the film: The value of this film is that it is a record of a performance by George Prentice whose Punch and Judy show achieved great popularity in Variety during...
Ghost Rider - George Thurman, Chuck Ungar
Kevin, feeling very sad and lonely after spending his first day in a new junior high school meets a young girl on his bus ride home who drops a pencil and suddenly disappears. Is this mysterious young girl a ghost of a girl who died on a bus years before? Why is she so adamant that Kevin learn bus safety rules? Like many films from the late 1970s and early 1980s, this film uses supernatural elements to keep kids' attention.
Soapy The Germ Fighter
Young Billy Martin has to learn that being clean isn’t the same as being a “sissy.” One night, a giant, talking cake of soap wearing tights and a puffy-sleeved shirt assures him of this fact. This film, like many personal hygiene films, taught kids about germs and what to do to avoid them – in case their parents neglected to do so.
National Drinking Game PSA
The disembodied voice shows up a lively party and manages to make everybody feel bad about drinking by having them play the "National Drinking Game" - a quiz to help determine if a person is an alcoholic. NOTE - This clip has a complete film countdown along with a "china girl" (not a girl of Chinese origin, but a clip of an attractive girl used by film processors to ensure that colors - such as skin tones - are being accurately duplicated).
Destruction: Fun or Dumb?
Deals with one of the major problems facing school administrators in every part of the country. Designed to make students realize that vandalism is dumb.
Alcohol Is Dynamite
Teens Bud and Jack, eager to get some alcohol from the liquor store, ask the adult to buy it for them. Instead, the adult tells them a story of three teenagers who learn the hard way that "alcohol is a violent narcotic.” In true Sid Davis form, the story ends with one innocent teen being killed and one who becomes an alcoholic bum, leaving the others to deal with guilt from their night of reckless abandon
Buying Food
Made for home economics class, this is a primer on sensible food shopping. We learn to read canned food labels and get a glimpse at the mysterious grading system for various foods (and may understand why food grades are no longer advertised unless they are “Grade A”). Many of this film’s messages are still poignant today, especially since supermarkets are designed to encourage “impulse buying.”
Down and Out
While attempting to show us the common hazards which cause workers to lose their balance, this film has more slapstick than most Three Stooges shorts - the film’s hero fall down more than thirty times. It’s not clear whether the film was meant to be funny as workers probably were laughing at this poor schnook more than learning from his mistakes.
I Like Bikes...
This quirky film educates young drivers to try to share the road with bicyclists. We follow the growth of Lisa from a pig-tailed bicyclist to a teen driver who now must tolerate unpredictable bike-riders. “GM likes bikes too!” It's narrated by Jim Stringer - who did much of the music for Centron Films in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Great American Chocolate Factory, The
A fascinating look at how milk chocolate is made.
If Mirrors Could Speak : Self-Image Film
In hopes of keeping kids' attention, social engineering films would often use supernatural elements to make their points. In this film, we see a magic talking mirror that reflects bratty kids as clowns. Most of the misbehaving kids understand how their behavior is disruptive and make amends. Surprisingly, one kid doesn’t care if he is a "clown" and continues being a jerk – probably for the rest of his life.
Promotion Bypass
An older employee responds appropriately when he is told that the “big promotion” is going to a younger, more educated employee. Here’s another film in the Calvin management series that provides no answers, but lets you decide which is the best way not to promote the old guy.
Freeze-In
Made for Sears appliance salesmen, this film tries to capitalize on the zany format of TV's Laugh-In to introduce the new Kenmore freezer campaign. Even though the film features two of the stars from Laugh-In - Arte Johnson and Judy Carne.- it is clear that the director of this ephemeral gem missed the point.
Purely Coincidental
This film, aimed at food factory employees, lays on the heavy melodrama to make its point about the food safety. Guilt, assembly lines of food products and a dramatic soundtrack make this movie unique.
You and Your Work
Young Frank Taylor loathes working at a shoe store, but discovers that he is doomed to hate any job unless he changes his attitude. After a motivational lecture by his high school guidance counselor, Frank looks forward to working the rest of his life selling shoes.
Crunch and Munch Commercial
Television commercial for Crunch and Munch
Safety with Animals
Shows how to approach and handle animals, both wild and domestic, with an emphasis on dogs and horses. Surveys the general field of safety around animals pointing out the need for knowledge and skill, the dangers in handling wild animals and how to handle trained animals. Filmmakers seems to torment both kids and animals in the process of making this film.
Each Child Is Different
This film was made for teachers as a reminder that learning disabilities and less-than-ideal home environments can affect students' performance and behavior. While this film was supposed to foster compassion for these children, some scenarios are so troubling and overdramatic that they could invoke a teacher's pity, thus allowing troubled students to pass onto the next grade without learning anything.
Mobile Lab : Any Questions?
Describes the curriculum of a mobile science laboratory traveling from high school to high school in Washington, DC. Shows how the program demonstrates that science is relevant to urban living.

Keep Off The Grass
Tom gets in trouble when his mother finds a joint in his room. Instead of punishing Tom, his father challenges him to learn more about marijuana’s evil effects on society. Nobody gets killed in this Sid Davis film, yet Tom still learns a harsh lesson after being mugged by druggies and learning that his best friend sells pot to school children
Sudden Birth
This film was made to instruct police officers on the basics of childbirth and to show them an actual birth - mostly so they wouldn't panic or pass out when confronted with such a scenario. WARNING! The poor acting by actual police officers and doctors and low production values in this film make the live birth scene even more shocking than others from this genre.
All Together
Lou Rawls plays Naval recruiter trying to lure the “young black” who’s tired of the limited work opportunities available to him or her. While the Navy did offer more opportunities to minorities than the civilian world, this film exploits the dissatisfaction the many minorities felt regarding racial equality in the workplace. Music is by Port Authority – the US Navy’s Soul Band.
Operation Ivy
Detonation of the hydrogen bomb.
Innocent Party
Like many other Centron venereal disease films, “Innocent Party” focuses on the morality and emotions associated with venereal disease rather than the medical aspects. The actual mechanics of syphilis transmission are only briefly mentioned let alone prevention via condom use, yet the shame and anguish are clear for all to see. This film echoes the common theme found in many venereal disease films - that premarital sex leads to VD.
Face of Lincoln, The
Presents Professor Merrell Gage, retired head of the Department of Sculpture at the University of Southern California, describing the life and career of Abraham Lincoln as he sculpts a lifelike bust of the 16th President, making physical changes in the subject's hair, beard and expression to correspond to events in Lincoln's life.
Twenty-Five Hour Day
Amateur movie filmed in color during the Vietnam War.

This film uses a child’s curiosity about animals to convey its messages. Young Helen learns that she cleans herself just like her cat Kitty does. Unfortunately, Helen doesn’t pick up on the fact the Kitty doesn’t like to be groped by a room full of grimy school children. Films featuring animals and young children are usually as torturous to watch, as they were to make.
Ole' 23 - John Eggert
A teacher hopes to instill a sense of responsibility in his students by having them "fix up" the school's activity bus. Will it work?
The Story - ACI Productions
A filmmaker, Homer, records his young son, Matt, telling an imaginative story to his two younger sisters, Lisa and Maggie. Records the spontaneous tale with all the interruptions, comments and reactions of the sister. Can you name the celebrity in this film?
Case for Beer, A
A cautionary film for convenience store owners about underage alcohol sales.
Skipper Learns A Lesson
In a departure from Sid Davis' traditional "kids in peril" scenarios, this film introduces us to Skipper - a bigoted dog who doesn’t like the "funny looking' diverse neighborhood kids that his owner is playing with. Skipper also has problems with the neighborhood dogs, but learns his lesson when he accidentally gets covered in poster paint. Even though this film is awkward and the message is forced, it is one of the first made for young children that addresses the problems of racial intolerance...
It Must Be The Neighbors
Bill Duncan gets a Health Department citation for having a rusted-out garbage can. He talks to his buddy at the Health Department and learns that his neighborhood is filled with rats, disease carrying mosquitoes and neighbors who are eager to blame these problems on each other. These were common problems in suburbs where the health departments didn’t always have the resources to intervene.
Why Doesn't Cathy Eat Breakfast?
This film shows us possible reasons that Cathy might not be eating breakfast every morning, but ultimately asks that we, the audience, "stop the projector and discuss". There's another film in this series, "Why Not Snack?" which deals with snacking (obviously). I've found that most of the school films that discuss nutrition are sponsored by a dairy organization.
Trouble With Women, The
With such a provocative title, this film illustrates some of the perceived problems a supervisor might face working with women, but ultimately demonstrates where the real problem lies. The irritated supervisor in this film shows up again in “The Grapevine”.
Food Getting Among Animals
Shows how different animals acquire food. And like other Moody Institute of Science films, there is a religious message.

Shows a girl who draws a picture with her rabbit's help.
York Peppermint Patty Commercial
Bicycle Safety
Points out that the bicycle rider is responsible for maintaining the bicycle in good condition, obeying traffic rules and watching out for others. The film also reads like a laundry list of hazardous things to attempt on your bicycle! Those familiar with Lawrence, Kansas (Centron's home) may recognize some landmarks.
Appreciating Our Parents
Young Tommy sneaks around and discovers that his parents work hard to take care of him and his messes. After watching them slave and toil, he learns that he should be "a real member of his family team," so he can get a bigger allowance. Films like this tried to introduce kids to the idea of being a productive member of society.
Bus Nut
We learn about bus safety from a young girl who is a self-professed "Bus Nut." Emphasizes the danger of horseplay while waiting for a school bus, the dangers of running in front of a school bus without clear signal from the bus driver, and the correct way to enter a school bus.
Seagrams Nightmare
An odd comedy skit/salespitch for Seven Crown liquor for bar owners. While this film doesn't have a proper title, the tail leader says "Seagrams Nightmare".
Liquor By The Drink PSA
This public service announcement urged North Carolina voters to vote against a law giving individual counties the ability to allow "liquor by the drink" (the ability to serve an individual liquor drink). The measure passed in 1978, but even today (2004) some counties in North Carolina forbid the sell of alcohol - including wine and beer - leading some natives to quip that N.C.'s state motto should be "First in Flight, Last in Liquor".
Parent To Child About Sex
While this film’s producers should be applauded for their sensible approach in teaching parents how to talk to kids about sex, the awkward reading of cue cards and embarrassing situations will produce nervous giggles among even the most jaded audiences. This film was produced by some of the pioneers of sex education whose ideas are still being challenged by school boards today.
Radioactive Fallout and Shelter - U S Office Of Civil Defense
Teaches the individual how to take care of his medical and health needs in time of disaster when medical assistance might not be readily available. Presents instructions on radioactive fallout and shelter. Discusses the effects of radiation on people and emphasizes protective procedures against radiation.
Personality and Emotions
This film illustrates that conflicts and experiences we have as kids help build healthier and richer personalities as adults. So fight early and fight often. Films like these helped define to students what was considered normal behavior.

Bicycle Clown
Because of his recklessness and foolish behavior, Johnny has an accident while riding his bicycle. His brother finds there are several reasons for Johnny's accident and helps him to overcome his attitude and improve his bike riding habits. While mild compared to other Sid Davis films, we still can see the Sid Davis trademarks: voice-over narration, kids in peril and great illustrations.

This film was part of Wonder series, made by the Moody Institute of Science, shares some similiarities with the Mr. Wizard television series - kids come by and visit the neighborhood scientist who is happy to demonstrate some science experiments...
Very Special Man, A
A recruiting film for seaman suggesting they pursue a career in electronics.

Atom Goes To Sea, The
Explains how an atomic powered submarine operates. Includes scenes at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady and the submarine reactor test site at West Milton, New York.
Crossroads Crash
Part of a film series on typical types of automobile crashes and their causes, this films starts with a goofy sequence with Bonnie and Clyde-type characters. Like many films made to address social woes (drugs, teen pregnancy, shoplifting) driver’s education films were often cautionary tales where people were punished for their mistakes. The challenge of these films was to get their audiences to identify with the characters and situations on the screen...
Coal Miner, The
This film explains and explores the advanced technology in today's coal industry through interviews with men and women who work in the mines and are proud of it. They tell the story of American technology and our national pastime of building a better mousetrap. This seems like a PR piece made to counter negative views of coal miners as troublemaking strikers.
Soft as a Cloud
So you've spent all this money on the latest appliances, but you still aren't happy. Perhaps it is because your water is "old fashioned". This film sells the housewife on buying a water softener for the home even if they already have soft water.
