1943: Coming Snafu
Private Snafu:   June, 1943  Chuck Jones

From 1943 to 1945 Warner's produced 26 "Private Snafu" cartoons. They were used as part of the Army-Navy Screen Magazine, a film series shown at military bases around the world. Each cartoon is approximately four and a half minutes long and in black-and-white. The cartoons utilized all of Warner's cartoon directors and voice artists and Carl Staling's music.
Private Snafu is the worst soldier in the army, the one who does everything wrong, even with the help of his magical friend Technical Fairy First Class. The films illustrate in a humorous way what not to do to stay alive in the Armed Forces. Many of the films were written by Theodore Geisel (Dr. Suess), and Phil Eastman.
Although the Pentagon had to approve the storyboards, Chuck Jones recalls that he and the other directors were given a great deal of latitude in the way they handled the material and were allowed to add comic business. As the Snafu series were intended for an audience of GI's, the gags included lots of cheesecake shots, sexual innuendo, bare posteriors and a  occasional "damn or hell."
Warner Bros. started doing the Private Snafu series first, then Snafu was spread out to other studios. After the war the the various studios destroyed thousands of feet of animation, leaving only a few Private Snafu's to remain in circulation.
This first movie is just an introduction of Snafu and his "vicious" attitudes toward military life!

1943: Spies
Private Snafu:   August, 1943  Chuck Jones

Though boasting about being able to keep military secrets, Snafu slowly blurts out information within earshot of enemy agents (including a lady spy with a radio transmitter in her brassiere). Adolf torpedoes Snafu's ship, sending the soldiers to Hades.

1944: Russian Rhapsody (AKA Gremlins from the Cremlin)
Director: Robert Clampett
Production Company: Warner Brothers & Vitaphone Corporation

Adolf Hitler sends the greatest superman in the Reich (himself) on a solo mission to bomb Moscow. He is beset by gremlins, most of which are caricatures of the Warner Bros. cartoon staff. (At least one gremlin is "only 3 1/2 years old"!) The thoroughly zany "Gremlins from the Kremlin" which infest his aircraft destroy the plane with surreal damage; they also inflict amazing indignities to Hitler's person, sending Der Fuehrer to his doom.

Scrub Me Mama With That Boogie Beat (1941)
Production Company: Universal Pictures

Banned because... this movie is racist! There is no good argues against it. Stereotyping of ethnic minorities was common in cartoons of the golden age, but what we see in this one must have looked abnormal even in the 40's! All the supposed humor is based on stereotyping! But if we try to analyze the content a little closer, I would claim that the racism not exactly is hateful! I like to think the way of portraying black people in this short is based on general ignorance more than real issues. And their is some kind of charm in this technical superior animation. The characters is mostly lazy "coons" who pick one cotton piece and the time, eat water melons, fight in slow motion and sleep with flies buzzing around their heads. Only to be interrupted by a Ethel Waters caricature who get's everyone going in a long dominating musical number. It is pretty offensive for out days standards. But it can be discussed if that really was the intention. After all it was widely accepted as a whole in the 40's. We must not forget that. I don't think cartoons like this should be banned, the world doesn't become a better place of that reason. They could serve as a great reminder about yesterday.

Popeye!

(Let's have a look at the anatomy of your average Japanese according to cartoonists of these movies.
Your average Japanman is an extremely polite little fellow with very recognizable characteristics. He is about four feet tall and wears round glasses and a kimono and has buckteeth bigger than his slanted little eyeballs.

page5_54

His politeness is however only skin deep. If you turn your back to him for even one second, he will show his true form:

page5_55

Ready to attack from behind, Japanese people will grow fangs and attack with whatever weapon available. They will often attack a single opponent as a group...)

1943: A Jolly Good Furlough
Producer: Max and  David Fleischer - Famous Studios Productions

Popeye is doing a great job of sinking Japanese ships (complete with toilet-flush sound effect). A carrier pigeon brings him notice that he's been granted a month furlough, which he plans to spend with Olive and his nephews. But on arrival, he's run over by Olive, who immediately leaves him alone with his nephews, who are practicing home defense. Popeye falls for their booby-trapped hammock, and also barely survives the demonstrations of their other skills, notably camouflage. He ends up in a beehive; the displaced bees take up residence in a gas mask, which a nephew slaps on Popeye; the bees then manage to fly Popeye all through the house, then drop him on the ground, where his nephews bandage him all too thoroughly. That's enough for Popeye, who heads back to the front; the pigeon tries to deliver notice of an extra two weeks, but Popeye will have none of it.

Popeye's nephews happen by just as the glue factory is rejecting a sorry looking horse and decide to take it home. They want to treat it as a house pet, despite the obvious problems; Popeye says no. They try to hide it, including painting a Hitler face on its rear and calling it a painter, but keep making mistakes like feeding it horseradish (great reaction shots). Finally, they hide the horse in the closet; Popeye comes out and says that they'll have to keep it now. We see why when she's sitting at the table with her four new foals. The only Popeye color cartoon of WW2.

1945: Mr. Hook - Tokio Woes

About as offensive as a cartoon can be, "Tokyo Woes" starts off with a radio broadcast from Japan's capital. Naturally, the characters have giant teeth and slits for eyes (one even has the same voice as Porky Pig). But over in the United States, Seaman Hook is listening to the broadcast and decides to take charge: he launches a bomb at them.
Obviously, it's a little hard to laugh at this cartoon in the 21st century, especially after Hiroshima and Nagasaki... but as long as we understand what it portrays, we can still watch it. In fact, I recommend this cartoon just to show the WWII-era zeitgeist. The end was the seminal prediction of optimism; it has applied off and on since the war ended.

"Tokio Woes" è un'altro dei più offensivi cartoons sui giapponesi di tutta la Seconda Guerra Mondiale! Naturalmente, ad oltre sessant'anni di distanza e dopo Hiroshima e Nagasaki è un pò difficile ridere con questo cartoon, che comunque resta uno dei "classici" più noti dell'epoca.

1944, France is been occupied by the Nazis for almost 4 years so far. Just a few months before the D-day and the invasion of Normandy Goebbels' propaganda created this cartoon starring "duplicates" of the animated "Hollywood stars" (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Popeye and others). This forgotten movie was aimed to discourage French people to listen to the BBC radio transmissions announcing the imminent invasion.
