The JFK killing in Dallas is the event of the year.
The first emission controls are mandated.
Chevrolet introduces a new line of smaller cars, the Chevy II.
GM produces its 75,000,000th US-made vehicle (March 14 ).
Tilt steering is optional in General Motors cars.
Alfred P. Sloan's book, My Years With General Motors, is published.
Chrysler offers the industry's first 5 year or 50,000 mile warranty on drive train components.
This year Chrysler purchases 40 percent of the shares of the Spanish car company Barreros.
In 1963, under Love's leadership, Chrysler introduces the Chrysler Turbine Car, designed by Ghia. The vehicle is powered by a turbine engine, similar to today's jet engines. Only 50 of the vehicles are manufactured for consumer research and testing. The Turbine Car never goes into full production, but the research results will be incorporated into defense vehicle technology. The Federal government allowed the Turbine Car's bodies (hand built in Italy by Ghia) into the country on a visa for five or six months. Chrysler would not pay the duty if they destroy them before the visa expired. They could have shipped them back to Italy but... perhaps for economic reasons, most end up as blast furnace food.

Alcuni esemplari della concept Chrysler Turbine Car, disegnata da Ghia, cominciano a circolare per le strade americane, affidate a dei comuni cittadini perche' possano testarle per un periodo di tempo limitato. La maggior parte di queste fantastiche auto, usate dai tecnici del reparto ricerche Mopar come dei veri e propri laboratori viaggianti, verra' distrutta per permettere alla Chrysler di non pagare le tasse di importazione sulle carrozzerie provenienti dall'Italia. Queste carrozzerie avevano solo un permesso di importazione provvisoria "duty-free" per un limitato periodo di tempo. Oltrepassato questo termine, le tasse si sarebbero dovute pagare, a meno che le carrozzerie non fossero state rispedite in Italia o... trasformate in metallo da fusione! Quest'ultima soluzione, certamente la piu' economica, e' quella che la Chrysler alla fine decidera' di adottare.
La Chrysler Turbine Car non entrera' mai definitivamente in produzione, ma i risultati di queste ricerche verranno utilizzatii nelle tecnologie usate per i veicoli militari.

Here is a short history of the Chrysler Turbine Car.
Chrysler's chief engineer of research and development, George Hubner, started the Turbine Cars Project in 1954.
These experimental engines have been mounted on dream cars and on normal bodies, for long term driving tests, and the evolution of the research proceeded constantly for nearly ten years.
In 1963 the Chrysler Corporation built over 50 gas turbine-powered cars. Incredibly, they then lent them (free of charge) to normal citizens to drive for three months each, with comments and feedback encouraged at the end of the period.
So, almost 40 years ago, a number of people in the US were literally driving jet cars around on public roads - taking them to the supermarket, commuting to work, and probably parking them at drive-ins! And these weren't just 'pretend' jet cars, they were the real thing. Engines revving at speeds of up to 48,000 rpm and with exhaust gas temperatures of 2800 degrees Celsius. They were certainly the only cars on the road that had tachos going to 60,000 rpm.
Released to the press in New York on May 14, 1963, the Chrysler Turbine Car used a body produced by Ghia with mechanicals made by Chrysler. Except for the revolutionary driveline, the rest of the car aped typical US contemporary car practice. But that jet-like exhaust note (said by some to have been deliberately left loud) was like no other family car on the block...
The Fed. government allowed the bodies (hand built in Italy by Ghia) into the country on a VISA for five or six years. Chrysler would not pay the duty if they destroyed them before the VISA expired. They could have shipped them back to Italy but, as the shots (clip below) taken for the Federals shows, most ended up as blast furnace food between 1967 and 1969.

WE LICENSE FOOTAGE from our Collections for: multimedial creations on CD or DVD, TV commercials, film or TV programs, documentary Productions, web sites, marketing/ad campaigns, video email, electronic kiosks, trade shows, business seminars, cultural events, museums, expositions... and more.
Hi-Res videos from our Collections are available on DVD, CD or directly in your inbox. Clips and movies can also be downloaded from our servers using a PW or uploaded by us to your FTP.

(1) It is possible to obtain digital duplicates of the multimedial files (movies, videos, audio documents, and Virtual Reality files) from Romano-Archives for research, teaching, general interest user information, and private study purposes.
The files are available on a customized DVD-ROM.
Billing is done when the order is fulfilled. Payment instructions will follow. Normal turn around time for requests is 3 weeks. Rush (2-3 business days) is available for an additional fee of 40 Euros.
Romano-Archives will provide up to 2,000 (or about 10% of this Collection) multimedial files to a single requesting party.

The multimedial files of the Collections are compatible with the free version of the most common players: Quicktime Player , Real Player, Windows Media Player.
Mac users can easily view MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4, and Divx movies in MacOSX with the free version of this program: VLC Media Player.
All the material in the Romano-Archives Collections is in the public domain and has no copyright attached to it. Only exception are original articles or texts published on this Website and the Romano-Archives' original compilations on CDs or DVDs that are subject to copyright.

Quasi tutte le versioni digitalizzate dei filmati sono state realizzate in alta risoluzione, con la migliore qualità audio-video possibile e sono copie editabili (possono cioè essere tagliate ed usate per qualsiasi tipo di montaggio digitale).
I video in alta risoluzione delle nostre Collezioni sono disponibili su DVD, CD o direttamente via email. Film e video possono anche essere scaricati dai nostri server con una password o caricati da noi sul vostro FTP.
Tutti i video compresi in questa Collezione sono disponibili in differenti formati, dimensioni e livelli di risoluzione. Saremo lieti di suggerirvi il più adatto alle vostre esigenze: visione su TV (DVD-Divx player), PC o IPod.
Sono disponibili licenze per pubblicazione sul Web o creazione di opere multimediali su CD o DVD, produzione di documentari, programmi televisivi, proiezioni pubbliche per istituzioni scolastiche o universitarie, eventi culturali (visione su monitor, anche in ripetizione automatica "loop mode"), musei, esposizioni ed altro.

(1) E' possibile ottenere duplicati digitali dei files multimediali (filmati, video, documenti audio, files Virtual Reality, PDF e quant'altro) da Romano-Archives per scopo di studio, insegnamento, informazione o ricerca storica.
I files sono disponibili su DVD-ROM personalizzati.
La richiesta di pagamento viene effettuata appena il vostro DVD è stato messo in ordine. Seguiranno le indicazioni su come effettuare il pagamento.
Il periodo normale di attesa per una spedizione è di circa tre settimane. Richieste di materiale storico con carattere di urgenza (2-3 giornate lavorative) vengono accettate dietro versamento di una somma extra di 40 Euro.

I filmati e le clips multimediali compresi nelle Collezioni richiedono la versione gratuita dei players più comuni come Quicktime Player, Real Player, Windows Media Player.
Molti dei filmati d'archivio in alta qualità sono in formato Divx o MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4. Gli utenti Macintosh possono facilmente visionare questi filmati in MacOSX con la versione gratuita di questo programma: VLC Media Player.
I singoli files di materiale storico digitalizzato compresi nelle Collezioni sono Public Domain, quindi privi di alcun copyright. L'unico materiale soggetto a copyright sono gli articoli originali ed i vari testi pubblicati su questo Website, nonchè le compilations originali contenute nei CD o DVD distribuiti. Tutti i marchi che appaiono nei files appartengono ai legittimi proprietari.
L'uso di questo materiale, distribuito per scopo di studio, insegnamento, informazione o ricerca storica. viene inteso nel rispetto delle leggi internazionali sulla proprietà intellettuale.
