1958
GM marks its 50th anniversary with the year-long Golden Milestone celebration. The theme is "From the Progress of the Past - the Promise of the Future".
The first demonstration of an automatically guided automobile takes place at the GM Tech Center, introducing the possibility of a built-in guidance system for tomorrow's highways.
This year GM also sponsorize "American Look".The definitive Popoluxe film on 1950s automotive, industrial, interior and architectural design.
Although the 1958 Buicks keep last year's roof line and fins, there are new curves in the sheetmetal again this year. The 1958 Buicks almost pass for Oldsmobiles of the same year, equally sharing the same amount of afterghought chrome.
Buick production is a low 257,124 setting Buick in fifth place. Buicks are capturing the prestige market's attention as prices reache a high of $4,700, and strangely enough, a low of $2,900.
Debuting with the Ford Edsel, and being outlived by it, is Buick's air bag suspension. A fan belt driven compressor feeds air to a tank located between the frame horns. From there the compressed air is routed to each of the four air bags, which replaces the coil springs. Fortunately, this system is optional, front and rear, on this year's Buicks. In 1959 it will be optional on the rear only, then faded out of production.
Getting back to 1958, Buick offers a dual exhaust system with two resonators placed before and after each muffler.
1958 also marks the debut of Germany's four-cylinder Opel, which is to be sold through American Buick dealerships.
In January Ford's Mercury, Lincoln and Edsel divisions are joined to form M-E-L (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) Division.
This year Ford comes up with more "rocketry" in their concept cars: the DePaolo and the X-2000.
The first Toyotas and Datsuns are on sale in the US.

In gennaio le divisioni della Ford, Mercury, Lincoln ed Edsel, vengono riunite per formare la M-E-L (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) Division.
La GM festeggia il suo 50esimo anniversario con una festa che dura un intero anno chiamata Golden Milestone. Il tema dell'esposizione, che si svolge in contemporanea nelle sedi dei concessionari sull'intero territorio nazionale, e': "Dal Progresso del Passato - la Promessa del Futuro".
Sempre nell'ambito delle celebrazioni per il cinquantenario, la GM sponsorizza un mediometraggio, American Look, con l'obbiettivo di fare il punto sullo stato del design industriale in generale, con particolare riguardo al design automobilistico.
La prima dimostrazione di un'automobile in grado di essere teleguidata dall'esterno ha luogo presso il GM Tech Center. Viene cosi' introdotto il concetto di poter avere in futuro un sistema di guida integrato sulle autostrade.
La Ford prepara due altre Concept Cars, la DePaolo e la X-2000. Assomigliano a due missili... per volare raso terra!
Anche nel 1958 per le Buick ci sono lievi cambiamenti, affinamenti, ma sempre con una grande abbondanza di cromature. Le vendite scendono leggermente a favore delle Oldsmobile che, in quanto a cromo, quest'anno si sono quasi portate alla pari delle Buick.
257.124 modelli portano la Buick a scendere al quinto posto nelle vendite del 1958.
La Buick comunque ha catturato l'attenzione del mercato delle auto di prestigio (o viceversa) dal momento che i suoi prezzi hanno raggiunto i 4.700 dollari.

This John Sutherland cartoon from the late 1950's begins with newspaper headlines about space travel and tax cuts while Dad contemplates buying a new car on Oct. 5, 2000. Pampered Mom, computerized home, 4 hour work day, and cars that drive themselves. A comical pre-1960 history of the auto industry's "remarkable inventions" making cars better and safer so more and more could enjoy operating them follows. Too bad the flying cars didn't work out, but I'd settle for the 4 hour work day.

The basic plot line of this film, of a Martian observer making comments our driving habits, would be taken up again, and done better, in the Canadian National Film Board classic "Out Of This World!". What this film does have going for it is a great sound track by jazz legend Art Blakey and the weird late 50's minimalist animation style, reminiscant of Gene Deitch and Columbia Animation. The religious overtones, especially when coupled with the basic plot, just adds to the weirdness.

Prior to this 1958 broadcast, live TV shows were routinely preserved in monochrome either by film kinescope recording, or beginning in 1957, on black and white Video Tape. This is the first TV transmission recorded (and wonderfully preserved) using color Video Tape in the World! That happened in Wichita, Kansas, in October, 17, 1958. The show was an acclaimed Emmy award-winning NBC special, "An Evening with Fred Astaire", sponsored by Chrysler Corporation.

WE LICENSE FOOTAGE from our Collections for: multimedial creations on CD or DVD, TV commercials, film or TV programs, documentary Productions, web sites, marketing/ad campaigns, video email, electronic kiosks, trade shows, business seminars, cultural events, museums, expositions... and more.
Hi-Res videos from our Collections are available on DVD, CD or directly in your inbox. Clips and movies can also be downloaded from our servers using a PW or uploaded by us to your FTP.

(1) It is possible to obtain digital duplicates of the multimedial files (movies, videos, audio documents, and Virtual Reality files) from Romano-Archives for research, teaching, general interest user information, and private study purposes.
The files are available on a customized DVD-ROM.
