The Alfred Cheney Johnston's Girls
Alfred Cheney Johnston was born in New York City on April 8, 1885. Johnston's father was a distinguished banker who had connections to New York City's upper class. Charles Dana Gibson, creator of the "Gibson Girl" was a family friend who encouraged the young Alfred in his art.
In 1903, at the age of 18, Alfred enrolled at The Art Students League of New York. In 1904 he transferred to the National Academy of Design in New York City then located on 109th Street. There he studied to be an illustrator. The required drawing and painting classes from the nude model which were a part of the Academy's rigorous training program would prove to have a significant influence on his later photography.
Charles Dana Gibson continued to mentor the young Johnston. "I was his protégé'...", Johnston later recounted. It was Gibson who initially advised Alfred to begin working in photography and to capitalize on it's new potential as an illustration tool.
Alfred Cheney Johnston started experimenting with photography by taking portraits of friends and fellow students attending his art classes. At this time artists who could paint portraits in oil were making a good living, particularly European artists. It's likely that Johnston's astute mentor also advised him that there was a good living to be made specializing in photographic portraiture. Alfred applied the knowledge and principles he'd absorbed from his painting classes to his portrait photography. Johnston's photographs were indeed very painterly and throughout his life many would compare his photographic technique to that of fine art painting.
Johnston graduated from the Academy in 1908 and married fellow classmate Doris Gernon in 1909. For the next seven years Cheney continued to experiment with his photography while Doris, an accomplished painter was known to do the artistic darkroom retouch work on Cheney's glass plates and prints.

Around 1916 Alfred Cheney Johnston's photography was brought to the attention of Florenz Ziegfeld, founder of the Ziegfeld Follies. After seeing examples of his portrait photography, Ziegfeld invited the young Johnston to become official photographer for the Follies. Cheney had one stipulation to accepting Ziegfeld's offer. He required that his name be included as a byline below every one of his photographs. Again it's quite possible that Charles Dana Gibson advised him on this. It proved to be an excellent business move because Johnston's byline brought him other commercial work for film companies and advertising agencies.
Ziegfeld promoted his shows as "Glorifying the American Girl" and it was Johnston's job to capture Ziegfeld's vision on film. Johnston's portraits of Ziegfeld's girls became world famous. Just as his mentor Charles Dana Gibson created the "Gibson Girl", Johnston went on to create the "Ziegfeld Girl" which became the next standard of beauty for a new generation of Americans.
Cheney Johnston had a very lucrative career with the Follies until the stock market crash of 1929. The Follies was hit hard. Ziegfeld lost all of his money and later died in 1932 as a result of the strain. Johnston continued to work commercially in NYC. However, with the loss of the Follies account it seemed as though Johnston had lost his identity.
In 1939 Cheney and Doris decided to leave NYC and bought a 15 acre rural property in Oxford, Connecticut. The reasons for the move are unclear but they may include the fact that his photographic style had fallen out of fashion and WWII was approaching bringing with it uncertainty and the rising cost of living in NYC. He and Doris converted the barn on their property into studio space for her painting and his photography.
There is little record of the photographs that Cheney took from his years in Connecticut. In 1937, just prior to moving to Connecticut, he partnered with Swann Publications of NYC and published a spiral bound art book entitled Enchanting Beauty. Although praised by critics, fellow artists and friends, the book's success appears limited.
After the war Cheney attempted to begin again in 1949 by opening a photography studio in New Haven, CT and later by opening another studio in Seymour, a small town close to Oxford, but both studios were short lived.
He joined the Hartford County Camera Club as well as the Connecticut branch of the PPANE, the New England regional group connected to the PPA, the Professional Photographers of America. He gave a few lectures and demonstrations at the yearly conventions of these organizations and also taught photography to small groups at his studio in Connecticut.
In the 1960's while in his late 70's Cheney attempted to donate his entire studio and his photographic work to various organizations in NYC and Washington DC but no one was interested or able to store it.
Alfred Cheney Johnston died in 1971, three years after the death of his wife. He died alone survived only by his cat and the remains of thousands of portraits from a faded era which had made him famous. The world of the 1970's with the Viet Nam War, rock music and fine art photography had a lock on the attention of the NYC art world and Cheney's passing went largely unnoticed. The remaining photos and negatives went largely dispersed and lost.

Alfred Cheney Johnston nacque a New York City l'8 Aprile 1885. Suo padre era un distinto banchiere, che coltivava relazioni con l'alta società newyorkese. L'illustratore Charles Dana Gibson, il creatore delle "Gibson's Girls" era un amico di famiglia che incoraggiava il giovane Alfred ad intraprendere la sua stessa carriera artistica.
Nel 1903, il diciottenne Alfred si iscrisse alla Art Students League di New York per trasferirsi, l'anno successivo, alla National Academy of Design a New York City, dove prese il corso di Illustratore.
Le sessioni di nudo artistico, richieste dal rigoroso programma di studi dell'Accademia, ebbero sicuramente un ruolo importante nell'influenzare le sue future fotografie.

Alfred Cheney Johnston iniziò i suoi esperimenti fotografici ritraendo amici e compagni di studi. In quegli anni, gli artisti che dipingevano ritratti ad olio guadagnavano assai bene, in particolare i pittori europei. Ancora una volta Gibson, l'astuto mentore di Johnston, gli diede il suggerimento giusto: ci sarebbe stato parecchio da guadagnare eseguendo dei buoni ritratti fotografici! Così Alfred applicò la conoscenza e i principi che aveva assorbito durante la frequentazione dei corsi di pittura ai suoi ritratti fotografici. Le foto di Johnston risultarono così fin dall'inizio molto simili a dei quadri e, per tutta la sua vita, Cheney sentì comparare la sua tecnica fotografica con quella dei ritratto pittorico accademico.

Johnston si laureò all'Accademia nel 1908 e sposò la compagna di corsi Doris Gernon nel 1909. Per sette anni Cheney continuò a sperimentare con la fotografia mentre Doris, apprezzata pittrice, ritoccava a mano e sistemava artisticamente gli sfondi delle lastre e delle stampe prodotte dal marito.
Intorno al 1916 le fotografie di Alfred Cheney Johnston furono sottoposte all'attenzione di Florenz Ziegfeld, fondatore delle Ziegfeld Follies. Dopo aver esaminato degli esempi dei suoi ritratti fotografici, un entusiasta Ziegfield invitò il giovane Johnston a divenire il fotografo ufficiale delle Follies. Quest'ultimo, per accettare, impose una sola condizione: richiese che il suo nome venisse incluso in tutte le copie delle sue foto, stampato con un apposito timbro sul retro. Ziegfield naturalmente accettò. Anche qui è estremamente probabile che sia stato Dana Gibson a consigliargli questa mossa astuta. Fu un'eccellente trovata promozionale che fruttò a Johnston molte altre commissioni, per compagnie di produzione cinematografica e per agenzie pubblicitarie.
Ziegfield pubblicizzava i suoi spettacoli come una "Glorificazione della Ragazza Americana", e il compito di Johnston fu quello di catturare la visione di Ziegfield su pellicola. I suoi ritratti delle ragazze di Ziegfield in breve acquistarono una notorietà planetaria. Dopo la "Ragazza Gibson", creata alla fine dell'800 dal suo amico disegnatore Charles Dana Gibson, Johnston mise tutto il suo impegno nel creare con le sue foto l'immagine della "Ragazza Ziegfield", fissando così il nuovo standard della bellezza femminile per la successiva generazione di americani.
Cheney Johnston ebbe una carriera estremamente lucrativa... fino al crollo della Borsa del 1929.
Le Follies furono duramente colpite dalla Crisi. Ziegfield perse tutto il suo denaro e mori in povertà nel 1932. Johnston continuò a lavorare a New York, ma la fine delle Follies lo faceva apparire, anche ai suoi stessi occhi, come un uomo che aveva perso probabilmente per sempre la sua identità.
Nel 1939 Cheney e Doris decisero di lasciare New York e comprarono una tenuta di campagna di 15 acri a Oxford, Connecticut. La Seconda Guerra Mondiale si avvicinava e i prezzi nelle grandi città erano schizzati alle stelle... e forse questo è uno dei motivi che possono aver spinto la famiglia Johnston ad abbandonare New York City.
Non resta praticamente traccia delle foto di Johnston relative al periodo successivo a questo trasferimento.
Nel dopoguerra Cheney tentò di ricominciare aprendo uno studio fotografico a New Haven, Connecticut, e poi un altro a Seymur, una cittadina vicino a Oxford, ma entrambi ebbero vita breve.
Tenne in seguito delle conferenze per l'Associazione dei Fotografi Professionisti Americani del New England e diede lezioni di fotografia, nel suo studio del Connecticut, a piccoli gruppi di studenti.
Negli anni 60 Cheney, che stava per diventare ottantenne, tentò di donare il suo intero studio ed il lavoro fotografico di tutta una vita a varie organizzazioni di New York e di Washington DC, ma nessuno apparve interessato o in grado di immagazzinare il materiale.
Alfred Cheney Johnston morì nel 1971, tre anni dopo la scomparsa dell'adorata Doris. Gli sopravvisse il suo gatto e ciò che rimaneva delle migliaia di foto scattate, ritratti di un mondo e di un'epoca ormai scomparsi, che l'avevano reso famoso. La società dei primi anni 70, occupata con la guerra in Vietnam, il nuovo Rock Heavy-Metal, i postumi dell'Era Psichedelica ed altro, non prestava più tanta attenzione ai personaggi del vecchio mondo artistico newyorkese, così la morte di Cheney passò praticamente inosservata. Le foto ed i negativi rimasti andarono in gran parte dispersi e perduti.
Questa Collezione comprende una selezione di oltre 400 rarissime ed in gran parte inedite foto di Alfred Cheney Johnston, questo grande artista dimenticato.
Le Ziegfield Girls, alcune delle quali sono in seguito diventate famose stelle del cinema, appaiono in queste curatissime immagini in alta definizione in tutto il loro splendido appeal, simbolico di una raffinata eleganza hollywoodiana ormai desueta e dell'affascinante, irripetibile Era del Jazz.
