1953
Charles E. Wilson, President of General Motors, offers the following response during a 1953 U.S. Senate hearing held to determine his qualifications for Secretary of Defense. Responding to a question concerning any possible conflict of interest, he answered: "I cannot conceive of one because for years I thought that what was good for our country was good for General Motors, and vice versa".
GM's Parade of Progress, a traveling educational exhibit initiated by Charles F. Kettering in 1936 and discontinued during the war years, begins touring again.
12-volt electrical systems, developed by Delco Remy Division, are installed on 1953 Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles and Buicks.
The Buick high compression V-8 engine is introduced. Power brakes are offered by Buick and Oldsmobile.
The GM Desert Proving Ground of Mesa, Arizona, is formally dedicated on April 22, 1953.
At the end of 1953 the Chevrolet Corvette is introduced. The Vette is designed to compete with European sports cars. It is the first volume production American sports car and the first production car with a plastic body to be produced in quantity.
GM acquires Euclid Road Machinery Co. with plants in Euclid, Ohio, and Lanarkshire, Scotland. Euclid manufactures and distribute off-road earth moving equipment.
GM's Motorama, a touring product show, opens in New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
Cadillac offers its Eldorado Convertible. (Remind you of the LeSabre? This is Harley Earl's design too!)
Buick cars have allways been fast cars.They become even faster when Buick celebrates their 50th year in 1953 with the new overhead valve V-8s, in two versions. These engines are capable of producing 188 horsepower at 3,000 rpms from a 322 cubic inch block, fed by a four barrel carburation. These engines also have the highest compression in all of Detroit with an 8.5:1 ratio.
Buick's style remains the same, with the exception of cluttered headlight shrouds and a new tail light configuration.
To really celebrate their golden anniversary Buick introduces America's first family-sized sporty car, the Skylark. The Skylarks, built in convertible form only, have a short run of 1,690 for 1953, selling at a flat $5000.
The Skylarks resemble the other Buicks of the same era, yet their soft tops, wire wheels and fully radiused rear wheel wells are all that is needed to set them apart.
Difficulties in marketing the Allstate cause Sears to cancel the project early in the year.
May 7: Ford Archives are dedicated at Fair Lane (former Henry Ford Estate).
On the 20th of the same month Research & Engineering Center in Dearborn is dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, via closed-circuit television from the White House.
June 16: Ford Rotunda, closed to the public during World War II, reopens for Ford Motor Company's 50th anniversary.
Hudson wins 22 of 37 NASCAR Grand National races in 1953.
La Cadillac lancia la sua Eldorado Convertibile. E' un'auto splendida che ricorda molto la concept LeSabre. Naturalmente anche la Eldorado e' uscita dalla matita di Harley Earl.
Le Buick sono sempre state auto veloci. Lo diventano ancora di piu' quando la Buick, in occasione del suo cinquantesimo anniversario, lancia il suo nuovo motore V8 con valvole a camme in testa, in due differenti versioni. Questi motori sono capaci di produrre 188 HP da un blocco di 322 pollici cubici alimentato da un carburatore quadricorpo. Queste unita' hanno anche il piu' alto rapporto di compressione di tutti i motori costruiti fino ad ora a Detroit, con un rapporto di 8.5/1.
Lo stile delle Buick di quest'anno rimane invariato, con l'eccezione di diversi fari anteriori "cigliati" e di una nuova configurazione delle luci posteriori.
Per celebrare degnamente il cinquantesimo anniversario, la Buick presenta anche la prima auto americana sportiva su misura per le famiglie, la Skylark. Costruita solo con carrozzeria convertibile, nel 1953 ne vengono vendute 1690, al prezzo pulito di 5.000 dollari
Le Skylark assomigliano alle altre Buick costruite nello stesso periodo, con il loro soft-top, ruote a finti raggi e la ruota di scorta montata dietro, il che implica una spropositata lunghezza del paraurti posteriore.
Decisamente la Buick Skylark ha tutto quello che le serve per diversificarsi e conseguentemente distinguersi dal resto della produzione di Detroit.
Durante un udienza del Senato volta a determinare se il Presidente della GM, Charles E. Wilson, abbia le necessarie competenze per essere nominato Segretario della Difesa, a quest'ultimo viene rivolta una domanda riguardante il possibile verificarsi di un conflitto di interessi. La risposta di Wilson e' la seguente: "Non credo ci possa essere alcun conflitto d'interessi, dal momento che per anni ho pensato che quello che andava bene per il nostro Paese andasse bene anche per la GM, e viceversa."
La "Parade of Progress" della GM, un'esibizione viaggiante a scopo educativo-culturale che era stata inaugurata da Charles F. Kettering nel 1936 ed in seguito sospesa durante gli anni della guerra, ricomincia un nuovo tour degli Stati Uniti.
I primi sistemi elettrici a 12 volt, sviluppati dalla Delco Remy Division, vengono installati sulle Cadillac, Oldsmobile e Buick modello 1953.
Il motore Buick V8 ad alta compressione viene introdotto sul mercato.
Il servofreno viene offerto dalla Buick e dalla Oldsmobile.
La nuova pista per i test della GM situata nel deserto dell'Arizona, la Desert Proving Ground di Mesa, viene formalmente inaugurata il 22 aprile.
La GM acquisisce la Euclid Road Machinery Co. con impianti situati ad Euclid, Ohio, ed in Scozia, nel Lanarkshire. La Euclid fabbrica e distribuisce equipaggiamenti di veicoli pesanti per il movimento-terra.
Al Waldorf-Astoria Hotel di New York viene inaugurato il "Motorama", una mostra della GM relativa a prodotti per il turismo automobilistico.
Il 7 maggio i Ford Archives vengono messi a disposizione del pubblico a Fair Lane, la ex Henry Ford Estate.
Il 20 maggio Il Presidente Dwight D. Eisenhower tiene dalla Casa Bianca, tramite un collegamento televisivo a circuito chiuso, un discorso inaugurale in occasione dell'apertura del nuovissimo Ford Research & Engineering Center di Dearborn.
Il 16 giugno il complesso espositivo Ford Rotunda, chiuso al pubblico durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, viene riaperto in occasione del cinquantesimo anniversario della Ford Motor Co.
Alla fine dell'anno la General Motors presenta la Chevrolet Corvette. E' la prima auto sportiva ad essere prodotta in grandi quantita' ed e' anche la prima auto prodotta in serie ad avere la carrozzeria in materiale plastico.
La mitica "Vette" e' stata progettata per competere con le sportive di produzione europea.

Humanistic film showing the effects of an oil discovery on Williston, North Dakota and the surrounding region.
This film documents the coming of oil drilling to North Dakota and it's effects on the people living there. Farmer Nils Halverson (Warning! This film is full of Norwegian Lutherans!) tells the story of petroleum representatives coming to his wheat farm and offering to buy the mineral rights of his land. The coming of oil is shown to bring hope to hard-bitten farmers like Nils, giving them a steadier, more dependable income to supplement what they make from farming. Of course, this film was sponsored by the Petroleum Institute, so you know this picture is skewed in the rosy direction. Still, there's something very real and touching about this film. It's made more in the style of the classic documentaries of the 30s than in the style of industrial films. The people in the film, and their concerns, are very real and convincing. The film gives us a slice-of-life view of rural North Dakota in the 50s, which gives it historical value. All in all, it's not too bad a deal, though. It could be worse.

Through a series of vignettes, the narrator (Lorne Greene) explains that "glandular changes" may make teens "have unrealistic ideas of their own future" and "seem to spend hours in completely useless activity."

Almost all the digital copies of the films are good quality Hi-Res editable videos.
The videos in this Collection are available in different format, size and definition. We can suggest you the right one for the use you have in mind.

WE LICENSE FOOTAGE from our Collections for: multimedial creations on CD or DVD, TV commercials, film or TV programs, documentary Productions, web sites, marketing/ad campaigns, video email, electronic kiosks, trade shows, business seminars, cultural events, museums, expositions... and more.
Hi-Res videos from our Collections are available on DVD, CD or directly in your inbox. Clips and movies can also be downloaded from our servers using a PW or uploaded by us to your FTP.
