1952

A worker out of 7 has a job related to the Automobile Industry. GM produces an interesting documentary about it.
Powered steering is offered by Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Buick in the 1952 models.
Following government proceedings to resolve accusations that GM and GMAC had required GM dealers to use GMAC's financing service, GM enters into a consent decree which sets ground rules for the relations of General Motors and GMAC with dealers. Under the decree, GMAC will conduct its business independently and in competition with other financing organizations.
As the Buick model years passes, changes became less noticeable. On the 1952 Buicks, a chrome spear, just ahead of the rear wheel well, runs forward ending atop the front wheel well. On the 1951 models this spear had a stray piece to it which runs above the rear wheel wells.
Despite the fact that chrome is rearranged to denote one model year from another, the Buicks of the early 50ies are all authentic super cars. They have a unique styling all their own and their size makes for plenty of room, even in the 2-door models.
Automatics are the rageas 85 percent of all Buicks built in 1952, equipped with the Dynaflow trasmission.
Aug. 31: the Henry Ford Trade School closes after 35 years.
Oct. 9: William Clay Ford is named General Manager of the Ford's Special Products Operations.
Packard offers powered brakes.
Marshall Teague, who becomes synonymous with Hudson performance in the fifties, wins 12 of 13 AAA events in 1952.
Overall, Hudson wins 27 of the 34 NASCAR races in 1952.

The Diesel Story (1952)
Producer: Shell Oil Company
Traces the development of the diesel from the Otto 'SILENT' gas engine of 1877, through Rudolph Diesel's engine, to the machines that now drive ships, trains, tractors, trucks and cars.
Fairly numbing history of the diesel engine. From the birth of the steam engines, scientist were always looking out for ways to make engines faster and more fuel economical. The secret seemed to rely on the pistons, I guess. I am not that mechanically inclined, so this was a bit beyond my league. Quite interesting to see the stock footage they used though, which was credited at the end, from a German and Swedish movie.

Newsreel stories reformatted for educational presentation.
Korean War Overview: Not much is said here, we watch military maneuvers, MAccarthur arriving, more maneuvers. I did like the drop of supplies from the jet.
French Premier arrives in New York: Pretty interesting, as we see him tour around before eventually meeting with Truman, where the "negotiations" were "successful".
Red Cross Blood Program: Pretty standard plea for more blood, as it's needed at the war front (great shot of a nurse tiptoeing through a field) and at home, where we are helping the injured war vets (to bowl!)
Underwater Army Vehicles: the army introduces their new vehicles... they run under water!
A pretty standard review of model trains is offered next, Noithing too remarkable.
A NY church that can switch denominations by means of a switch is shown next, which is very interesting. Not too sure if the church is still around.
A Track and Field championships event is overviewed next, where we focus on a sprint runner a shot putter and a pole vaulter (who was very happy to win).
To wrap it up, a somewhat boring overview of Australia is presented, and why the Aussies are so important.

Roadrunners (1952)
Producer: unknown
Outlaw hotrodders become law-abiding gearheads after a community organizes supervised racing clubs and timing associations.
"Mel" is a hot-rodder who quickly conforms when he discovers the Santa Ana drag strip and the Lake El Mirage timing trials. These provide a "safe and constructive outlet," the narrator tells us, and help mitigate the "juvenile nuisance problem." "Trophies now instead of traffic tickets! He'll never speed on the highway again!" Real life wasn't really this simple....
Good shots of homemade hot rods and seat belts.

The Cool Hot Rod (1952)
Producer: Sid Davis
In this Sid Davis production, a young boy new to the town, is puzled by why the kids don't accept him and his hotrodding ways. When he tries to get all the kids impressed by talking about it, they all turn away in disgust. Rather then parking one night in a abandoned business and listening to Kenny Loggins and dancing in protest, he actually goes to the kids an learns why the kids act in such a square fashion. One of the town kids you see, was killed while trying to beat a train. So Tom Hanks (yes, Tom Hanks, that's the character's name) arranges a hot rod track to be made. All the kids are so excited about this track that they arrange knight clubs that will all agree to drive slowly an keep their cars in running order and hlp out in their community. The hot-rodder is so won over by this show of hip-to-be-squareness that he runs off to prove he can be as nerdish as everyone else! A great, if slightly overlong movie. Bonus points: The many newspaper with screaming headlines but with the same stories on the remaining sections.
