1919-1922
During this year Oregon puts the first tax on gasoline.
1919 Jan. 1: Edsel Ford succeeds Henry Ford as Company President.
In 1919 General Motors acquires 60% interest in Fisher Body Company.
General Motors Acceptance Corporation is established to finance the sale of General Motors cars and trucks.
Construction of the General Motors Building in Detroit begins.
The predecessor of General Motors Institute of Technology opens at Flint as part-time training school.
The Guardian Frigerator Company changes its name to Frigidaire Corporation. General Motors Corporation purchases all of the outstanding stock of the Frigidaire Co on May 31, 1919.
Also in 1919 General Motors purchases Dayton Wright Company, an early airplane manufacturer. In 1929, its assets will be sold to Fokker Aircraft Corporation.
Since 1919 all General Motors employees in the US are made eligible to participate in the GM Savings and Investment Plan (predecessor to the Savings-Stock Purchase Program, established in 1955).
Employees contributions of up to $300 per year are matched by a GM contribution of $.50 for every dollar that employees invest in the plan. The plan will be discontinued in 1935.
In 1919 Morris Eckhart sells control of interest of the Auburn Automobile Company to Chicago investors.
The Auburn 6-39R Beauty-Six Roadster is produced during the same year.
In 1919, in addition to his responsibilities at Buick, Walter Chrysler becomes General Motors first Vice President in charge of manufacturing.
1920: Total vehicle production in the United States: 2,227,000. Total vehicle registration: 9,239,161.
Top speed for new cars is 40 mph; gasoline fuel efficiency is 20 miles per gallon.
In 1920 General Motors Research Corporation, predecessor of GM Research Laboratories, is established.
GM Export's first Far Eastern branch office opens in Manila (moved to Shanghai in 1922).
This year Durant resigns as President of General Motors and Pierre S. Du Pont, then Chairman of the Board, is named President.
For 1920 Buick production numbers 115,176, the highed priced of which sold for $2,700.
Sedans and coupes are becoming popular, yet the open cars are still king.
In 1920 Tommy Milton's Duesenberg sets the one mile record in 23.07 seconds at 156 mph.
Financially independent at age 45, Walter Chrysler retires from General Motors in 1920. But, within a year he is wooed out of retirement to become Executive Vice President of Willys-Overland, which is in financial trouble. He is later hired to aid the ailing Maxwell Motor Car Company, Inc.
1921: The Pig Stand, often called the first drive-in restaurant, is opened in Dallas.
In 1921 the Clark Street Cadillac factory begins production. At the time, it is the most modern plant in the industry. It will remains in production until 1987.
Also in 1921 Pierre Du Pont issues GM's first "Message to Shareholders."
In the same year GM decides to proceed with commercial application of Kettering's "copper-cooled" engine, intended to replace the traditional piston engine. The initial target is to put the copper-cooled engine in all of Chevrolet Division's cars. The program will be officially ended in 1923, with a total of fewer than 800 copper-cooled engines ever being produced and only 300 sold to dealers, all of which are recalled by GM.
1921 marks Buick's change from letter to numeral denotation with the new series 21. In the same year, second cowls, located at the back of the front seat, disappears on Buick tourings.
In 1921 Walter Chrysler is named Chairman of Maxwell Motor Car's Reorganization and Management Committee and revitalizes the Company with the development of the Chrysler Six, America's first medium-priced highn styled automobile. By January 1924, Maxwell Motor Car will set an industry sales record when sales of the Chrysler Six will reach 32,000 units.
1922: George Frost invents the first car radio.
Valve covers debuts on all Buick engines for the first time in 1922. This year's Buick Sport Roadster and Buick Sport Touring are identified by their rectangular rear windows while all others bear oval rear windows.
The first suburban shopping mall opened outside St. Louis (Country Club Plaza).
During these years, with an advanced all-steel body, the new Essex brand quickly establishes itself, despite the 1919-20 recession.

Quest'anno, pur continuando a dirigere la Buick, Walter Chrysler diventa il primo Vice Presidente della General Motors ad occuparsi direttamente della produzione.

Sempre quest'anno comincia la costruzione a Detroit del General Motors Building.
La Guardian Frigerator Company cambia nome e diventa la Frigidaire Corporation. Le sue azioni cominciano a salire vertiginosamente. Il 31 maggio 1919 la General Motors acquista l'intero pacchetto azionario della GFC.
Sempre nel 1919 la General Motors acquista la Dayton Wright Company, una delle prime fabbriche di aeroplani. Nel 1929, i suoi stabilimenti saranno ceduti alla Fokker Aircraft Corporation.
Dal 1919 tutti gli impiegati degli stabilimenti statunitensi della GM possono partecipare ad un nuovo piano di investimento personale. E' il GM Savings and Investment Plan (l'antenato del Savings-Stock Purchase Program, che verra' varato solo nel 1955). Il versamento individuale annuale di 300 $, eseguito dagli operai, viene integrato da un contributo della GM di 0,50 cents per ogni dollaro che il personale investe nel piano. Il Savings and Investment Plan sara' abbandonato nel 1935.
Nel 1920 a Dallas viene inaugurato il primo ristorante drive-in, il Pig Stand.
Le berline e le coupe' cominciano ad essere popolari, ma la parte del leone la fanno ancora, come sempre, le auto scoperte.
La produzione totale USA di veicoli nel 1920 e' di 2.227.000 unita'.
Veicoli totali registrati: 9.239.161.
La velocita' massima della media delle automobili prodotte e' di 40 mph; il consumo medio si aggira sulle 20 miglia per gallone.

Piu' tardi verra' incaricato di supervisionare la commercializione della Maxwell Motor Car Company, Inc.
Nel 1921 gli stabilimenti Cadillac di Clark Street inaugurano la produzione. All'epoca questi stabilimenti sono l'impianto piu' moderno di tutta l'industria automobilistica mondiale. In questa grande fabbrica si continueranno a produrre le Cadillac fino al 1987.
Sempre nel 1921 Pierre Du Pont dirama il primo "Comunicato agli Azionisti" nella storia della GM.
Nello stesso anno la General Motors decide di procedere all'applicazione commerciale del motore "copper-cooled" di Kettering allo scopo di sostituire, con quest'ultimo, il tradizionale motore a pistoni. L'obbiettivo iniziale sarebbe quello di utilizzare il "copper-cooled engine" su tutte le auto della Chevrolet Division. Il programma verra' invece ufficialmente dismesso nel 1923, con un totale di meno di 800 vetture con motori "copper-cooled" prodotte, delle quali solamente 300 verranno vendute ai concessionari, per essere poi nella loro totalita' ritirate dalla GM.
Nel 1921 Walter Chrysler viene nominato Chairman della Maxwell Motor Car e Presidente del comitato per la riorganizzazione del management della societa'.
In breve tempo Chrysler riesce a rivitalizzare la sua Company sviluppando la Chrysler Six, la prima automobile americana di prezzo medio con elevati contenuti di styling. Per il gennaio del 1924 la Maxwell Motor Car avra' stabilito un nuovo record delle vendite con 32.000 Chrysler Six commercializzate.
Nel 1922 George Frost inventa la prima autoradio.
Sempre durante quest'anno, appena fuori St. Louis, apre i battenti il primo shopping-center suburbano della storia. E' il Country Club Plaza.
Le calotte coprivalvole fanno il loro debutto su tutti i motori delle Buick modello 1922. Le Buick Sport Roadster e Sport Touring di quest'anno sono identificabili dai finestrini posteriori rettangolari, mentre tutte le altre marche adottano ancora i finestrini posteriori ovali.

Buster's handmade boat, The Damfino, is finished and is, of course, too large to get through the basement door.
When he drives off with it in tow, the side of his house, then the whole thing, collapses.
At the harbor he rides the boat out only to have it sink beneath him.
The rest is a series of adventures he and his family have with the restored boat.
This funny short has some good subtile gags plus the usual slapstick and gadgets.
A clear example about how the role of the automobile was becoming important in the silent movies scripts.
La barca che Buster Keaton si è costruito in casa è pronta. Buster l'aggancia all'auto e parte... e qui cominciano i suoi guai!
Un chiaro esempio dell'importante ruolo ricoperto dall'automobile nelle sceneggiature cinematografiche hollywoodiane all'epoca del muto.

Hi-Res videos from our Collections are available on DVD, CD or directly in your inbox. Clips and movies can also be downloaded from our servers using a PW or uploaded by us to your FTP.

I filmati e le clips multimediali compresi nelle Collezioni richiedono la versione gratuita dei players più comuni come Quicktime Player, Real Player, Windows Media Player.
Molti dei filmati d'archivio in alta qualità sono in formato Divx o MPEG 1, MPEG 2, MPEG 4. Gli utenti Macintosh possono facilmente visionare questi filmati in MacOSX con la versione gratuita di questo programma: VLC Media Player.
I singoli files di materiale storico digitalizzato compresi nelle Collezioni sono Public Domain, quindi privi di alcun copyright. L'unico materiale soggetto a copyright sono gli articoli originali ed i vari testi pubblicati su questo Website, nonchè le compilations originali contenute nei CD o DVD distribuiti. Tutti i marchi che appaiono nei files appartengono ai legittimi proprietari.
