Liutaio in Cremona

Author profile

I was born the 19th of may 1961 in Liege (Belgium). I have been receiving a musical education since my childhood, I have studied cello and double bass at the Académie Royale Grétry of Liege. I have been cellist of the International Chamber Orchestra Jean-Noel Hamal of Liege and double bass player of the Orchestra of dialectal Operetta.

The interest and the following approach to the art of making stringed instruments are a direct consequence of these experiences. I started my violinmaker carrier in 1979, when I served a two-year apprenticeship to the "Maison J. Bernard" and the habitual attendance with the violinmaker Georges Heynberg.

In 1981 I enrolled in the "Scuola Internazionale di Liuteria", the international school of Cremona to become a violinmaker. I moved there in order to keep on working. In Cremona I have also had the opportunity to follow a lot of training and specialization courses (making, restoration…).

I have devoted myself to the study of this subject for over twenty years.
Throughout these years I have cooperated with several violinmakers of Cremona trying to take inspiration from the sources of the true and authentic tradition of the old masters art. I'm always looking for balance and harmony so that "technique-matter-sound" can be combined.
I consider this profession a discipline characterized by manual skill and creativity.

I took part in several national and international shows and competitions with my instruments, in particular:

  • The Trademark Cremona violin making (U.S.A. 2002 Boston, Rochester, Washington, Cincinnati)
  • Frankfurt-Messe 2001-2002
  • Musicora Paris 2001
  • Oslo 2001
  • Stoccolma 2001
  • Tokyo 2001
  • Cremona 2001 (Cremonese Violin Makers…Today)

In 1994 I manufactured a quartet that I have dedicated to my home town. It was played by the international quartet "Gong" in a musical program of J. Rogister, a composer of Liege. During this occasion the instruments obtained a lot of favour by the public, the musicians themselves and the local press.

In order to improve the education and the experience of the school-leaver I'm collaborating with the province of Cremona (training school) as master of training.
